You sure know what to do. Listen to your heart, what does it say?
Seems to me you're unwilling to yield for fear of being idle. So you want to prick someone's emotion to get mad at situation, instigate a walk-away and slaps you with a better one, right? hm... Ballistic!!!

Sweetie, there's always a price to pay for everything!
Won't tell you what to do. Listen to you heart.

#5,000 naira for tax? shocked I'm a Tax Consultant and that is unbelievable too much!!!! Just for a month? Kai
So in essence, if you worked for him for a year, you will be paying a total of #60,000 naira for tax annually? grin grin grin

As a tax consultant my thinking was that you would have asked him his total package then do the calculation to see if 5k is much or not...

I pay close to 13k monthly as tax so it's based on your gross income.

Anyway I suggest he request for the tax schedule or tax receipt for confirmation.

Hello Guys
The story is not too Long but I will just want to know you opinion and advice, if possibly HELP OF ANOTHER JOB, please no insult.......

Am a graduate of Office Technology & Management with 4 years experience on Secretary, Front Desk, & Customer Service.... staying at Ajah Lagos

Ending of January I got a job through nairaland, the office is at Ajah, I was looking forward to work at ajah because I have an elderly woman am looking after, I don't want to work very far...
I was called for interview as a Secretary, on getting to the office, it was not what I was having in mind, the office is actually in a plaza, very small one at that, so i went in & was interviewed and salary was discussed, it was a very small amount for a graduate, but it's better than staying at home and I have huge responsibility, so I accepted the offer and to start working February.o

Oe week I discovered I was the only employee, anyone he interviewed on phone after coming to see the office they ran away because of the office Condition.. In the office No system to work with, only one lap top used by the boss alone, only one standing fan facing him alone, he promised to get my system, and new standing fan the day he was interviewing me, but he didn't, I doo come to work with a hand fan, and goes home smelling sweat, buying sure & rolling like mad..

I have never done anything relating to what I was employed for, what I do is going errands for him, he sends me out to many places, to go meet friends, collect receipts and all that are very far place, I endured through till it's time to pay me, he started posting me, today tomorrow, this evening, tomorrow morning, this afternoon, EVEN when I told home I need to go for my late father burial arrangements on Sunday cos I work Saturday, he said he would send my salary and he didn't...

Then one Sunday he called me to come to office to come collect my salary, I was happy at least am getting paid for my sweat.... getting to the office, he handed over the money to me I counted it, and I discovered the money was short of 5k, I asked he said the 5 thousand was for TAX.......I was speechless at first,. because he didn't tell me anything as such and how is 5k for TAX only, This is the money after paying all my debt am left with nothing.............

I want to ask you a question.... Is he the churchy churchy type? Holier than thou...

I was also going to ask before I saw this. A friend recently got a job offer with gross of about 110k and somehow they refusing to disclose the NET, only saying tax deductions and all that will be made. Any idea what could be expected?

You asked for our opinion. Here it is. Leave that job. That thing is slavery. What? You work on Saturdays? In such an unconducive environment? For how much? Pity you didn't even mention how much you're paid. Tell him to keep his job or get his sisters and daughters to come and do the work since it is a start up venture.

Wow. Some employers though. My dear, give him your resignation letter and walk out honorably. You're better off staying at home than being in that kind of environment. Use the opportunity to learn a skill and still be trying to get another job because your qualification is hot cake. God bless you

Some people are like that with money.

But, every job has something to learn. So it is not wasted time.

If you will leave, get a new job first

Never move without an option. Because its easier to get employment when you are working. It just makes you look more employable and reliable. Otherwise you'll just look lazy if your only current work is looking for a job

I dont know about you but what i have on my employment letter (and so many other people i know) is Gross Emolument, i have never seen Net pay on Employment contract before, it will typically read that the pay is subject to all applicable taxes.
Then permit me to say you need to start questioning your organisation. Your company or the organisation you work for should be able to provide a detailed breakdown of your NET which involves a whole lot. If it only captures gross then serious questions need to be asked.

For you to pay such amount that means you must be earning up to at least 85k per month.. I.e if your boss is not paying pension for you.. Even that 85k you wont be paying 5k as tax per month, it should be 4k plus...

So they should show you a computation of Net pay in an emoloyment letter? Bro i repeat, many companies show the breakdown of your gross only, of course they tell you there will be a pension contributions (which is mandatory at 8%), even if they didn't tell you, its common sense to know about pension.

You only got to know it is 40k after she made the comment later, you concluded it couldn't be 5k paye without even initially knowing her gross, so free the guy you are quoting, he is also thinking like you, he has probably not read up to the point the lady said the gross is 40k. The most important point is that a paye is 5k is very normal and thats what he was trying to address.

That was why I told you yesterday, it is COMMON SENSE!!!!! I don't expect her to earn anything higher than this after stating the working conditions! Can you compare your job to hers? Do you think the Government does not consider small companies as such? Don't compare where you work to hers please! How much are they earning as profit, that will make them pay so much? It is just common sense.

I think the problem here is that you assume too much. However, what I will tell you is that there are degrees of employment letters, depending on the reputation of the company you work for.

In my own case, it was five pages;

1. The letter itself and terms of contract (3 Pages)

2. Net breakdown (2 Pages)

Not every company would do that but then, it does not mean that it is not detailed or broken down for some folks.
