So many people think that America of today is America of Bill Clinton before 9/11. Even student visa to the US isn't paying again. I know of two people that went to the US under student visa and we're shocked when they were told to go home after graduation.

Canada is the only place that is paying for now.

True.

Anyone that comes with a student visa should be planning/looking at changing to a different visa from day one if they plan on staying in the USA post graduate.

Hello Everyone,
I am a fresh graduate from a reputable Federal Polytechnic in Nigeria, I graduated in 2017 and I am supposed to go for youth service this year (2018 Batch A Corps) which will commence soon. But I have an issue bothering me which I need a good advice on.

Last year 2017 my sister who is in USA for close to 12 years wanted me to come and hustle abroad but it's not easy for youth to go there but through schooling, so she helped me to find a good public University to do Masters, I have done the necessary processing and I have been offered an admission for the Fall Semester starting August 2018, my Visa has also been granted.

The issue on ground now is that I want to have the NYSC certificate, probably if I can runs it as a ghost Corper and get the certificate on my behalf or if an exemption can be possible.

Please I need your sincere advice. Thanks.

I strongly recommend that you get that certificate just in case you might need it in the future. You never can tell.

Option 1: Since you're a batch A corper, I assume you'll be going for service soon. You can start your service, travel in August and find someone to finish it for you (it may mean handing over your monthly allawe to the person + more as the case may be).

Option 2: Defer your Fall 2018 (august) admission to Spring 2019 (January) by emailing the school. Since you already have your visa you can travel anytime (you probably know but a visa is only a permit that allows you travel to the country of issuance and ask to be allowed entry into it. A 2-year US visa doesn't mean that you have 2 years to stay in the US. It means that you have 2 years from when you got it to enter and leave the US multiple times. Your visa is different from your legal status in the US and are 2 different things. For example, if you proceed onto PhD after 2 years of msc you would still legally be in student status whereas your visa expired few months/years back and you would need to renew it if you need to travel to Nigeria, for Christmas for example, so you can re-enter the US), thus giving you a few more months to do more of your service then find a cover for the remaining 2 or 3 months while you travel out in December this year.

Yeah,if only NYSC helps ones career and future I would have advised you to do it.Not a tough choice,if I were in your shoes when i was about going for NYSC I will have chosen the USA option.
One thing I found out is that traveling for most middle class and below families is usually an opportunity that you may only have one shot at...if you don't take your chance it may never happen again especially if someone is sponsoring you.
Do u plan returning to Nigeria? What conversation have u had with the family assisting you in USA about that topic?
I completed NYSC...i never got any job opportunity/interview to even mention that I have the certificate self..eventually fled naija,I am forever glad I did.
I hope u make the best decision and u do not regret your choice. Best wishes to you.
Please can you help me with the information of schooling abroad for my masters. Am in my final year studying computer science as a part time student in UNIOSUN. I have no desire for going for NYSC cos its a waste of time. Any information to help me out will be gladly appreciated. Fineyemi@gmail.com

My dear a relative faced a similar dilemma around 20 years ago. My advice (along with some other family members) was that he should do his NYSC and defer his going for master's abroad. He did and went abroad the following year. Today he's one of the younger members with a high position in the party ruling in his state. He's making impact at grass root, doing things under his political office portfolio. He still has that foreign mind of keeping promises. At least for now. Hope he keeps it up.

He established abroad before returning temporarily, but may become permanent. He maintains all he established abroad from 9ja right now. Family still abroad too. Now he's set to keep rising. Already eyeing a federal position.

Nigeria might not be great right now, but still try to do things legally, lest we be worse than the old cargo leaders we lambast daily here on NL.

Op please don't take this advice. Don't do the ghost corper thing but ignore the bolded. That it worked for someone doesn't mean it will work that way for you or anyone else. Besides that was 20 years ago not in this era that things are worse. A bird in the hand (Msc in US) is worth 2 in the bush (Prospective job after nysc). I am telling you what I would do if I was in similar situation. Don't waste your chance.

Application for visa starts 120 days before the school start date
i don't know about US but in canada, they will tell you to start as early you have your admission. Also, when i processed my US school, i don't think i followed that....i started my visa application immediately i got my I-20 (though i was denied visa)

Please I will advice don't runs it. Travel to USA, complete your Masters Degree, hustle, if you wish come and do your NYSC, if you don't, stay in the country where hole is profitable than here. cutting corners for your service may cost you unnecessary stress, just defile it for the mean time. Please, leave this country, please. Finally, you have to decide yourself on what to do, i.e , the final decision is yours.

You are still asking question? Please go do your masters and you will get opportunities there too. You can always come back and do the NYSC.
I have a little cousin who is in Texas now, he is doing very well. Though he left Nigeria to US after secondary school. I think he is done with UNI and probably doing masters and working. He is doing very well financially.

Babe for now forget NYSC. You have visa already, admission is set, you may not get this opportunity next time. Whereas, you can come back for NYSC at any time. You can ghost your NYSC though, but it would be easier if you're posted to states that havent started doing the biometric clearance. Not all states have started biometric clearance, even at that liase with the LI in charge of your local government. Even if you do ghost, your certificate would be given to you in person, how do you intend to go about that? I just concluded NYSC last December and I absolutely see no usefulness of that scheme, except meeting new friends. Go for your studies jare.
