At burger king, the issue I had when I started the job was communication. At this job, drama. Lemme explain.


If you notice, if you've paid close attention to my posts, I always tried to pick people's brains, to understand what makes them tick, to understand the mindset of the people I'd be working with, the mindset of Americans. In trying to do that, I try to strike up conversations with different people, dancing around different topics trying to get you to speak. In the first few weeks I started this job, I noticed this is a female dominated field and most of the persons whose brains I tried to pick were ladies. In no time, news had started flying around that the new guy is a flirt, he's always talking to everybody. It turns out these ladies mistook my questions and conversations for something else, they actually thought I was trying to hook up with them.

Each day I come to work, I'd hear one new gist about me and what I supposedly did. I wouldn't bore you guys with the sad tales of how these people think cos most of them are way too shallow to delve into deep conversations with. They are more content with running their mouths about celebrity news and who-is-fvcking-who at the job. The few times I've tried to bring politics or current affairs or something other than tv shows and drama and superficial stuff, I get a blank stare or something close to it. With time, I minimized my conversations to strictly work related stuff and started keeping to myself. My "brain-picking" project has been put on hold for now.

Workplaces where they require diplomas or specialized skills are not like this. When you get your degree and move up in career you will mingle with better crowd. If you work a white collar job, you can talk about world politics, economy, history, culture, whatever you want. The problem is, you tried to pick brains where there are no brains to begin with Well if you want to know about Americans, feel free to ask me since I'm American and a good observer of people.

The CNA job is the "starter" pack for nigerians that enter USA. I have relatives who had been telling me I was wasting my time at Burger king, only when I got my first CNA job pay check did I understand what they meant. With my first paycheck, I put my car in order. I got new tires $400 with the option of replacing them if anything goes bad (at a place called discount tire co) and a new car battery $150 (At a place called autozone) and I was left with some change, I then handled some bills around the house.

I left for Europe. Glad I'm not living in the horribly polarized society now, things got bad since Trump's election.

My people over there have said that things are definitely hotter in the States for now. It isn't everyday that once comes across foreigners here on Nairaland. Do you mind telling me why you joined this site? I am just curious.

I stumbled across here when Googling something (forgot what I was even searching) and the interesting topics on the main page got me read like an addict. Reasons I loved Nairaland and stayed here:

- People's humorous attitude and funny comments, also the interesting Nigerian perspective about local and world affairs.
- I see the news about Africa we never get to see in the Western media. We see only negative news and violence, peple post all kinds of positive news here.
- Culture threads are hella interesting, it's refreshing to learn about all those fascinating rich cultures and traditions.
- Fights never escalate to ugliness I see on facebook and western forums. Even if people fight, it gets resolved quickly, mods never have to lock threads.
- You people don't ban the trolls, you just turn them into some kind of resident joke. No one takes the trolls serious and just make them into funny fools. Something white people never learned.
- The banter between feminists and macho men is hilarious
- I am writing an epic fantasy series, and the tribal conflict stuff is a huge source of inspiration for me. I have only academic knowledge on tribal cultures, it's priceless to see the living tribal culture with real people writing comments, the complex structure and political issues will inspire stories.
- There are so many nice and positive people here!

I am sure that even in the developed world, there are people just as backward as Nigerians. However, we can always learn from them and they can learn from us. Or how do you see it?

I'm here to learn about all those rich and diverse cultures, and exchange all kinds of culture knowledge.
It took me more than 5 years to do the worldbuilding before I wrote any of the story. It's a lot of work, but I draw inspiration from the underrated parts of real history and various dead and living cultures of the world. Most fantasy writers are lazy about creating cultures or do only superficial research. I try to do better than that. Maybe someone will even publish the book when it's finished.

I think the best way to erase prejudices and stereotypes is establishing contact and listening to the real people instead of the media.

It took me more than 5 years to do the worldbuilding before I wrote any of the story. It's a lot of work, but I draw inspiration from the underrated parts of real history and various dead and living cultures of the world. Most fantasy writers are lazy about creating cultures or do only superficial research. I try to do better than that. Maybe someone will even publish the book when it's finished.

I think the best way to erase prejudices and stereotypes is establishing contact and listening to the real people instead of the media.

I have heard that Amazon has a way to do some low cost publishing. Maybe you could look into that to make publishing easier.

I am a fan of Issac Asimov and he launched his publishing career by writing short stories based on his universe. That is something else that might help you.

You are very right about shoddy research and world building being an issue. I am a fan of science fiction and alternate histories and sometimes one plot hole can really mess up an otherwise excellent universe.

I also agree with you about listening to the real people. All media companies have thier own agenda so they just end up twisting things to promote the agenda. Interpersonal communication helps us know that in the end we are all humans and can lead to much progress.
