The funny is that the lies perpetrated by the Yari.ba peeps have continued unabated. Everyday, the young Yari.ba people seemed to proliferate the falsehood bore by their forbears. From 1951 carpet-crossing, Fajuiyi sage in Ibadan to shooting war between Nigeria and Biafra, the Yari.ba peeps seemed to enjoy their lies. .

University of Ibadan Started as Yaba College, Lagos
The University of Ibadan has her origins in Yaba College (now YabaTech), founded in 1932 in Yaba, Lagos. The Yaba College is the first tertiary educational institute in Nigeria. Yaba College was transferred to Ibadan in 1948. That was when it became the University College of Ibadan. This is the name some of our fathers and grandfathers still call the University of Ibadan till today.
So, when did we start calling the institution University of Ibadan and when was it moved to its own site.

In February 1948, London University allowed Ibadan its special relationship scheme. Arthur Creech Jones, then Secretary of State for the Colonies, and an influential member of Elliot Commission, cut the first sod at the permanent site of the University College on 17 November, 1948, which thereafter became the Foundation Day.

How does this translate to the university being founded in 1962? UI remains the premiere university in Nigeria, nothing you can do about it.

UI became UI in 1962, not 1948 when it was still a degree awarding institution. Many institutes, colleges and polytechnics are degree awarding institution but they aren't universities e.g YABATECH, KADPOLY, SPIRITAN SEMINARY, etc

Tribalism has eaten deep into some peoples fibres that education appears to have failed to help them.

Before 1960, Nigeria wasn't even owned by Nigerians and virtually every major milestone have to be established or enjoyed the support/approval of the Colonial master, especially in areas that may pose threats to their interests.

The University of Ibadan was a university before 1960 but not independent (like every other thing in Nigeria) and had to be affiliated to the University of London which regulated its intake, standards ,curriculum and even the courses being studied there. Courses like LAW and ENGINEERING which will make the colonized Nigerians aware of their rights and encourage technological advancement weren't offered before Oct-1,1960.

Even before that date, there was nothing like the Nigerian army (eventhough the N.A has been in existence long before 1960) and other paraphernalia of an independent Nation.

The Op should have asked why the UNN whose enabling law was actually passed in 1955 but didn't open till Oct, 1960?
Why didn't we start studying Law and Engineering in Nigeria before 1960?
Why didn't we have T.V stations until Awolowo established one on the twilight of independence?
Why was there no Nigerian armed forces before Oct,1960?

The University of Nigeria was the first full-fledged indigenous and first autonomous university in Nigeria, modelled upon the American educational system. It is the first land-grant university in Africa and one of the five elite universities in the country. The university has 15 Faculties and 102 academic departments. The University offers 82 undergraduate programs and 211 postgraduate programmes
History Edit

A law to establish a University in the Eastern Region of Nigeria was passed on 18 May 1955.[6] While that date marks the formal beginning of the history of the University of Nigeria, the enactment of this legislation by several Nigerian leaders, and inspired particularly by the then Premier of the Eastern Region, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe.

One of the first steps taken by the Eastern Nigeria Government towards the implementation of its commitment was an invitation to both the United States of America and the United Kingdom to send advisers to help in the planning of physical and educational aspects of the proposed university.

Under the joint auspices of the Inter-University Council for Higher Education and Overseas and the International Co-operation Administration (now the United States Agency for International Development), J.W. Cook, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Exeter, Dr John A. Hannah, President of Michigan State University and Dr Glen L. Taggart, Dean of International Programs at the same university, came to Nigeria in 1958. The team surveyed the site at Nsukka, and extensively investigated a great variety of factors pertinent to the establishment of a new university.

The results of their efforts were contained in a white paper issued by the Eastern Nigeria Government on 30 November 1958. They had recommended "that the development of the University of Nigeria based upon the concept of service to problems and needs of Nigeria, is a desirable project and one that should receive support from any source which could help to make it a sound endeavor".

They further recommended that a provisional council be established to "draw upon the technical and consultative resources available throughout the world for help in planning the institution".

The provisional council, authorised by the Eastern Nigeria Legislature, was appointed by the Governor in Council in April 1959, and given necessary financial and administrative powers to build a sound university. It reflected the spirit of international co-operation which has given birth to the institution. It consisted of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chairman, Dr. T. Olawale Elias and Dr. Okechukwu Ikejiani from the Federation of Nigeria, J.S. Fulton from the United Kingdom, Dr. Margueritue Cartwright and Dr. Eldon Lee Johnson from the United States of America.

The University was formally opened on 7 October 1960, as the climax to the Nigerian independence celebrations in the Eastern Region. Her Royal Highness, Princess Alexandra of Kent, representing Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at the Nigerian independence celebrations, performed the opening ceremonies and laid the foundation stone of one of the University's early buildings.

Classes began on 17 October 1960 with an enrolment of 220 students and 13 members of the academic staff. The opening convocation addresses were delivered by the Chairman of the Provisional Council, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, the first President of the Federation of Nigeria, and by Dr John A. Hannah, President of Michigan State University, USA.
The university was fully autonomous, with the power to grant its own degrees. Technically speaking, therefore, it became the first fully-fledged university in Nigeria, since Ibadan was still at that time a university college granting London degrees. It also became the first university established by a Nigerian Regional Government. The University College Ibadan, the oldest university institution, cut its umbilical cord with London in October 1962, becoming the University of Ibadan. In July 1965, it turned out the first graduates holding Ibadan (rather than London) degrees, by which time Nsukka had produced two crops of graduates and taken all the publicity for turning out the first graduates of an autonomous Nigerian university.

4) Medicine, The Nigerian Medical association used to be called The Nigerian branch of THE BRITISH MEDICAL ASSOCIATION.
5) Judiciary= The highest court was the JUDICIAL COMMITTEE OF THE PRIVY COUNCIL.
The Supreme court of Nigeria was only established in 1963.
Before 1960,

(b) There was nothing like The Nigerian Law school, Nigerian Lawyers then needed to be called to British bars at Inner Temple, Middle Temple or Lincoln's inn,all in London.

6) There was no Nigerian army, what we had was The contingent of the British Army, Queen's own Nigeria.

Well said. Unfortunately it’s likely to fall on ears deafened by a desperate desire for self-esteem at any cost. This entire thread is one long monument to some people’s gigantic inferiority complex, and an embarrassment to their more worldly and intelligent kin. What sorts of individuals waste so much time and energy on such sophistry in the service of a doomed attempt at rewriting history, other than those with a gaping hole where their self-confidence should be?

Yoruba Parapos go school but them no learn anything at all at all.

UNIVERSITY OF LONDON COLLEGE, IBADAN is not the same thing as UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN haba.

UNIVERSITY OF LONDON COLLEGE, IBADAN has either folded or no longer exists, while UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN is still existing.

UNIVERSITY OF LONDON COLLEGE, IBADAN was set up in 1948 and effectively ceased to exist in 1962, while UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN was founded in 1962 and is still existing.

I know i need to explain it better to ewedurudeens so i will give you an example.

The present location of Abia State University used to be the Very location of Imo State University. When Imo State was divided and the school's location fell into Abia State, Imo State University relocated to a new location, and a new University was created known as Abia State University (Which now occupies the current location of the old institution).

Abia State University IS NOT AS OLD AS THE BUILDINGS IT IS PRESENTLY LOCATED, but Imo State University is OLDER THAT THE BUILDING IT IS CURRENTLY LOCATED AT.

EWEDU IS NOT GOOD.

That UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN is occupying the very location where a previous institution named UNIVERSITY OF LONDON COLLEGE, IBADAN does not make it as old as UNIVERSITY OF LONDON COLLEGE, IBADAN nor does it even make it a continuation or otherwise of UNIVERSITY OF LONDON COLLEGE, IBADAN.

OFE NSALA IS GOOD FOR YOU.

Take a look at the "professionals" being churned out by UNIVERSITY OF LONDON COLLEGE, IBADAN as tell me if they were ever to amount to any good. Their Children are on Nairaland right now.

Btw, can you even show us any official documentation, historic or news article that says your village school is the first university in Nigeria?
