Recently i saw a news that university of Lagos is planning on establishing a refinery

https://www.nairaland.com/4419148/university-lagos-unilag-establish-refineries

yes its good news as we can say that the vc and he's colleagues are finally thinking in the right direction, but however i think they are over ambitious ,a refinery is not what the school needs and building one is not going to be cheap either

while i was in one of the federal schools some years back, my school hosted the west African university games and a lot of money was wasted on building facilities to host the games for two weeks or thereabout after the games we the students didn't see any benefit rather than seeing friends from other schools around ,yet millions of naira was wasted , in better situations these money could be channelled into building
companies that can have a direct impact on the students.

for instance the chemistry/ industrial chemistry departments can set up a chemical producing plant which will be run like a standard organization strictly by the lecturers and students ,imagine the schools boasting of producing the best industrial chemicals or paints in the country and the bulk of the production is done by the students which in turn makes them better graduates, some with enough finance can even startup their own firms after school. wonder why the Harvard graduates don't go looking for jobs

accounting department can set of an account auditing firm with the help of the school and the students will be made to provide solutions to real life issues not repeated questions from 1988.

mechanical/ metallurgical engineering can set up a firm that produces the best wheelchairs or hospital beds in the country and the federal government will be their major buyers .

business admin students will not just read about administration on papers alone they will have the opportunity to proffer solutions to problems encountered by these firms

all other departments should set up something as well, imagine the chemical firm being the best producer of plastic producing chemicals in a state, how long will it be before it enters into the market of other states even other parts of the country ,if it is run properly, we can even export if it meets a high standard

note that these things are not difficult to set up if you consider the money these schools spend on social activities like inviting a celebrity for a show or campus concert, even the students themselves contribute money to bring musicians for their dinner parties .

imagine a professor in chemistry going to the market to buy paint for his house and the apprentice at the shop even know the contents of the paint better than the prof, isn't that shameful

sorry about the mistakes i know i am not a good writer but think about the points i have made

there are many more aspect of industrialisation that we can focus on, why aim for something that may never materialise due to economic policies or political interest, have they also considered the supply of the crude and other issues,

i am sure the chemical companies or other smaller establishments will solves the the publics immediate needs better than a refinery

have they also considered the supply of the crude and other issues,
where has the west been getting crude?
