WHAT MAKES ALUMINIUM ROOFING SHEETS TO LEAK?

1. Faulty corrugating machines

Whenever the machines used to fold aluminium sheets develop faults due to poor service and poor maintenance culture, it might start to punch too hard, perforating sheets in the process, such holes might be too small to notice, until it rains. That is when you see the faults. A roof repair guy will be needed to use felt and patch the roof from under to fix the leaks.

2. Lapping gaps

By this, I mean the point where two sheets join, where one sheet laps over the other to create a continuous roof. If you are using step tiles, or worse still Metcoppo sheets of aluminium, please help yourself and do what we call, DOUBLE LAPPING, this will mean lapping two rows of aluminium sheet instead of lapping on one only. Water splashing during rain fall can easily get under the single lap, and leak seriously into the house. With double Lapping, you are assured of less incidence of water getting under your roof from the point where two sheets join. It's important to note that double Lapping will increase your roofing sheets quantities by about 8-12%. You will actually spend more to do double lapping.

3. Roof Ridge covers

The ridge cover is another point that can let in water during the rain, especially with a poor carpentry job. Another problem with ridges is if the ridge capping is not wide enough to comfortably cover the roof, water can find a way to flow into the roof especially during heavier rains.

POINTS TO NOTE

1. That you used .55, .45 or .40 to roof your house is not the reason it will leak. The reason is the design, or wrong placement of your lapping.

2. The Metcoppo, and the step tiles will leak much more than the straight long span sheets. We usually think that the beauty of the Metcoppo or the step tiles, exposes it to a design flaw which makes it prone to leakage. Be ready for periodic roof maintenance if you use Metcoppo sheets.

Happy easter my good people.

Happy easter my good people.

My Chairman, how possible is it to use a smaller width ridge cover?

The ones we use here are slimmer than those at home.

I wasn't swindled. The plan was for 0.45mm which was supplied. This is the appropriate guage for domestic use. 0.55mm and above is appropriate for industrial use. You know there's trouble when you recommend industrial standard for domestic use.

Please how did you know it was 0.45mm that was supplied ?

There must be some sort of work done underneath to prevent water from getting under the sheets from the ridge. A smaller width of ridge cap will mean water dropping near the ridge will splash under the roofing sheets.

This is good, I'm happy to see that it can be done.

I prefer that look.

Thank you Sir.

I'm sold on it, I just have to find the right profile.

That's mostly what we have here and they make it onsite.

My Chief, near zero waste. The machine has a per feet counter that’s set to zero at the beginning of the day. End of day, multiply the end count by the $ per foot. Done.

No big warehouse office to pay for, etc

Please let the record show to my pansy friends on here, I did not claim to be ordering my aluminum roofing from the USA o grin

PS: They do custom windows onsite too but the way to save money is to use standard sizes that you can just pickup off of the store shelves like a loaf of bread at Shoprite.

Can we ever have such large hardware stores in Nigeria? Will people even pay for stuff?

I believe there's a place that should be able to produce this in Ibadan. The factory is located very close to Ìwó road.

I think we can.

I remember going to Gotshalcks (sp) in Ibadan when my dad was building a house in the mid 70’s.

It was a warehouse filled with building materials.

Does anybody remember CFAO?

Nigeria did take a nosedive but it can be turned around and I’m getting ready to do my little part.

Hian, you have started again, Lol, as far as I can recall and if my memory serves me right, nothing happened in 1984 except for the fact that Buhari / idiagbon were in power, their reign brought orderliness to the polity and several Nigerians were flogged who misbehaved, in light of that, any fraudster that disguises himself or come like a chameleon on here to defraud any homeowner, will be severely flogged and handed over to the EFCC to be prosecuted, enough said tongue

Their reign brought about the most terrible human rights violation in the history of Nigeria. They flogged, slapped, beat and frog jumped civilians for the most simple of offences. If you fail to fall into lines at bus stops, koboko for you. They also forced market women to bring out their goods and sell at ridiculously low prices, below their purchase costs, that's their best cure to inflation. Is that orderliness?

Hmmmm, interesting point, I am mostly concerned about the flogging aspects of the regime to enforce discipline but however all the other points you raised are duly noted as well.

Nigeria is a hardnut country and we need a brutal regime to instill some level of discipline and flogging on the buttocks to shapen some people and put them on the right track, suffice me to end it here to avoid further derailment of the thread let's go to the politics section and throw more fireworks, enjoy your day tongue

Is flogging offenders directly on the roads contained in your constitution? Answer that.

We in Nigeria are mostly illiterates. That's why we support crude methods to solve civil issues.

I was been sarcastic and trying to throw humor to the thread, and yes to the flogging question you asked me,

Sharia laws that is been practiced in some Northern states in Nigeria recognizes flogging and some offenders have actually been flogged in the North, the Northern states also follow the Nigerian constitution as well.

In addition, as long as the National Assembly has not been able to repeal, abrogate, ammend or stop the Sharia laws from been practiced in the North which invariably contains the flogging aspects, I will tilt to agree that it is part of our Constitution albeit in the North.

Hajj, my apologies for bringing a bit of politics here but after this post, I will not comment on this subject matter again, just trying to clear up some issues and answer the question from the poster to me.

And so, I am a pagan, living in Akwa Ibom and going about my normal duties in Uyo. I step out on the bus stop and didn't stand on any lines. A bus pulls up and I move and try to enter the bus, then a small boy in khaki and boots rush at me with koboko and flog me till I cry and beg. I am not in a sharia state and not a sharia adherent, and you want me to be happy.?

What is wrong with our brains?

I went to the factory direct, inspected the coil and it was pressed for me. The factory also did the installation and the subsequent maintenance. The factory no longer recommend Metcopo, they will only press for the client if the client insisted after telling the client of all well documented issues with Metcopo.

Sometimes, in design engineering there will be occasional design flaws like Toyota, Volkswagen, Honda have all been known to experience design mishaps so as reputable companies will recall the product. I think Metcopo should be recalled but Nigeria factor or the building regulatory bodies shouldn't approve Metcopo roofing unless certain conditions are met like double lapping or lining the wood carcass with PVC membrane before sheeting.
