@4kings, thanks for the good work. My python skill for data manipulation is poor. Please, is there any book you can recommend for a beginner to learn numpy library and co.

Didn't think about that.
Though it's not compulsory you use python, that's why i'm explaining the theoretical parts of every machine learning algorithm so anyone can use any language to implement it.

However, a good recommendation to make is the documentations of Numpy and Matplotlib:

And maybe my next tutorial would be a short relevant overview of Numpy and Matplotlib.

Hello guys! Pls what specs of laptops would you suggest for data analytics/ machine learning tasks?
Re: Artificial Intelligence And Machine Learning Group by Nobody: 9:57pm On Apr 18, 2018
@4kings your trying sha. It seems like you have a broad knowledge of the AI field in general. How long have you been learning about AI?

I haven't really had time for AI stuffs cause of Junior WAEC preparations. But I got this book called Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach and its really in depth and covers a lot of AI techniques not having to do with ML. From what I've read the books is really cool. I recommend it to anyone who who wants to learn more about the AI field!

I suggest you focus more on getting online GPU, while also getting a good enough laptop.

Depending on what you do with machine learning as you progress, you might be needing to process a very large data.

For example, dataset for medical imaging scan, speech synthesis, and so on, could be over 60gb.
Just ordinary games crashes most laptops, but this you would need to process and visualize the data to identify anomaly or likely approach to carry out, then carry out feature engineering test if need be on the data, then run algorithm on the feature vectors of the data, make cross validation with other algorithms or parameter optimization and so on...
This is too much work on a normal laptop, except you can afford the likes of Acer Predator and later models of AlienWare.

So my suggestion, is get a GPU cloud computing service that you can work from on a normal system. Then use your normal system to test on small data or algorithms you developing.

Cool. Just checked the contents of the book, that's a good start.
You could also check out courses on Stanford Online too, and they are free with good materials. https://online.stanford.edu/courses

And No, I don't have a broad knowledge of AI yet, atleast not to the level of those with the Academic background.

Just MIT OpenCourseWare bro.

You know what i studied for Bsc was totally unrelated; Accounting. embarassed embarassed embarassed

That's why i had to clarify that i don't have a broad knowledge of the field, i just have learnt much compared to most others i meet around even in Bioinformatics and Comp Science(in Nigeria though), which i find very unfortunate.

I personally find your progress amazing. It baffles me how you were able to sort of 'start afresh' and get so good at this stuff. . .you'd told me you studied Accounting before but I just had to confirm that I got that right grin grin because nobody would believe that when they hear you speak about this programming stuff.

I hated Accounting in school. sadgrin grin
So i was curious on what i could learn online, started with 3d modelling, even tried studying and talking about physics with my roommate and brother, then moved to normal programming before delving to Machine Learning.
I felt i had time to learn more, i would actually skip classes then, and tell someone to sign for me, while trying to figure out a problem, the more i learnt the deeper i got into it, don't know if i learnt fast(that depends on one's scale of measurement), but what aided me was that i had no big issues with maths prior to that, so could dedicate time to study and google till i understand a concept very well.

Thanks bro.

shocked shocked What course is that?

Anyways, i applied for Audio processing signal for music application and Game theory and it's free.
Though i just found the site not long ago, so i've not explored enough, since i'm based in MIT OpenCourseWare. It actually uses the Coursera platform.

Usually most online courses are taught for free and sometimes require fee only when you want to get certificates, but i have not seen one that expensive apart from Msc courses though.

The advanced matlab course in the homepage currently is also free, what course did you click on?

Hi Guys, glad i came across this while i was perusing the internet, i read through the threads and i feel in good hands/company. I'm undergoing a research on Speech Recognition. Specifically i'm trying to apply Machine learning Algorithms to speech recognition of Native Nigerian Languages. I am new to the concept of Machine learning, and i have undergone preliminary research on this area. Having read good number of literature i have an idea of what people are doing relating to my work. i know some gurus are here, and i will appreciate it if we can throw light on this. I just stated the research, so I AM CURIOUS TO KNOW IF MY IDEA IS POSSIBLE,THE CHALLENGES I HAVE TO TACKLE TO MAKE IT HAPPEN, AND POSSIBLY HOW TO GO ABOUT THE RESEARCH FASTER. I also just signed up on Nairaland for this purpose.Soliciting contributions please.

You seem to be a rockster in this field. I think I can use some help here.

Someone mailed me; Tunagy ?

Anyways, what's up guys, seems everyone has been equally busy (i have; had some objectives to meet up with for the last 3 weeks).
The last time this thread was really active was during december holiday, na wa ooo.

Even SoftEng hasn't logged in for a while, seems he is very very busy.

I Want to work with Python on this
You should search google scholars, researchgate, arxiv etc for similar resaearch implementations done by others.

I know of a lecturer in LAUTECH that implemented Yoruba Accent recognition and a lecturer in CU that did igbo speech recognition; and i'm sure there are many others.
You could check elsevier, researchgate or google scholars for their papers and others to see the techniques they used for their implementation and how you can improve on them.

Moreover as a beginner, you could start with a basic implementaion like using the filters(MFCC), HMM and classifying with simple multilayer perceptron or SVM on your dataset or just training it raw with CNN(this will be very bad but a start to see errors and how to tackle them).

I'm sure the code template for this should be on github or you could get them with google search(i have some implementations somewhere in my cloud storage or harddrive(been a while since i touched them), though i've not gone far). Just make up your dataset and plug and run to see your starting result.

Then implement various techniques gotten from research papers to improve on it(this is were you actually need to understand the techniques cos plug and play libraries might not help you out).
After you've used code templates(again i'm sure you can get them on github). To improve your performance read research papers implement on them on your data.

Anyways, i'm assuming you've got the dataset for this; if not start making one or contact some Nigerian researchers you meet on ResearchGate, Google scholars etc to help you out with their data.

I also intend on working on this(a somewhat similar project), but that would be later when i got the time(would get in touch with you then).

Here are couple pdfs for various ml algorithms(though heavily theoretical/mathematical): https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/electrical-engineering-and-computer-science/6-867-machine-learning-fall-2006/lecture-notes/ or just use the search bar on MIT OpencourseWare to check for ML techniques lectures.

I'm not good at recommending pdfs, cos i have limited source i look out for when i need to learn something. SoftEng or Darive can give you some sources.

But do you know how to program?
If you do then implement what you've learnt.
Start with libraries before going deeper.

**Can you mentor me over WhatsApp
We could mentor ourselves here as SoftEng indicated.
I normally get lost out of social media(apart from mails and google hangout) when i have serious projects or jobs to implement, so i might not be very active some times.

Don't mind how the thread is, it's because members are very busy, raymod170 and wane are busy with school, SOftEng not sure but apparently busy etc. But we are approaching summer holiday soon, so this thread would come back to life.

In the mean time you could share your progress and questions, and hopefully someone would engage you(i'll try to be active also smiley )

Deep Learning By Ian Goodfellow, Yoshua Bengio and one other guy is the most comprehensive deep learning and neural networks book I've ever seen.

For machine learning I suggest Machine Learning in Action due to the fact it doesn't use fancy libraries.

And for general AI theory I suggest Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach.

I'm also reading some neuroscience but it's not compulsory for everyone.
