Serious question.

Apart from the hydraulic suspension on those vehicles that still maintain them, what makes a Range inspection any different?

I think a 60 point inspection is same on all 2 axle vehicles.

Are the rear brakes inboard or outboard?
Revealing these information is a breach of my fundamental human rights. I am claiming the 5th amendment.[

Bro you are still a learner. Measuring wealth by type of car or ownership of vehicles (liability in every sense) because you can never recover the amount expended on it through sales...I know several multimillionaires without a ride but mad investments broh...A car isn't a measure of one's wealth...It isn't a priority for me...

In case anyone else was wondering like me, Range Rovers has standard outboard rear brakes so there’s nothing earth shattering on the inspection as per brakes.

No virgins need to be sacrificed cool

We don't rebuild engines because

1. We can remove and replace the current engine in a day, maximum 2 days. You cannot rebuild an engine in that time. We want fast money, not money that takes too much time to make

2. We do not want liability....pass on the liability if the tokunbo engine fails to the part seller...but we can claim the workmanship a second time to install yet another engine if the previous tokunbo was not fit for purpose

3. The parts to rebuild the engine have to be sourced from overseas, it will take time and our clients are not willing to wait or we have schooled them to believe that tokunbo engines are just as good if not better

4. Doing so is both a science and an art, not everyone is a master at both, and we don't feel the need to specialize or become master engine rebuilders, we don't believe that is where the money in this business lies and what is more, we have not invested in the education to make us great at this task

5. It is a messy job, we would rather not be bothered

6. We do not have the right tools for the job and because it is not a profit center we do not want to invest in the tools for such jobs

7. It is an exacting job that is unforgiving of mistakes, most of us are not that methodical and painstaking, we would suck at it, and we know it and so we had better not even try

8. We believe the cost of getting most engines tokunbo is less than the cost of workmanship involved in tearing apart and giving the in-place engines a new lease of life

9. our mates who do, do that without consulting documentation, and as a result such engines are not rebuilt to specification, and when they fail, we use those stories as warning to our clients that we don't want to do the same to your engine (but without the background that the job was not done properly and so it was bound to fail anywhere whereas were it done properly, it would be as good as a new engine)

10. We don't want to use the client's engine to do a test run of our capabilities or the lack of it.

Well said.....

Will like to add , few clients are willing to pay for the this service.

I had a sad experience once with 2 engine rebuilds, try as much as I did. Engine wouldn't come together, client was patient, till he lost patience.... (I was distraught thinking how I had failed myself). Client took it to another workshop, where i also do rebuilds unknown to him. Same experience I went through was what they experienced.

So I have drawn up an action plan....
1. Identify an engine fit for rebuild
2. Identify an engine fit for replacement

I have studied you from afar.

I know you must have done your best in the circumstances.

So we can add yet another reason to the list....Some engines are not worth the trouble of a rebuild, some are.

Professionalism includes finding out which is which.

It’s strictly a location based thing.

A true professional can rebuild ANY engine. ANY.

As an Autoist I take pride in some of my 60+ year old vehicles having the original engine and transmission. “Matching numbers” have a value to some.

I agree with you.

I haven't seen my friend rebuild engines, I have watched him diagnose and resolve issues, if he follows such steps in rebuilding engines, following manufacturer information, using manufacturer tools and data, adding that to his residual mechanical/technical acumen, then there is no reason why he should not be a success. That was the basis of my conclusion.

The reason for #4 of my list is there is proper formal/technical/professional education on engine rebuilding for any who is interested in the States, and a very vibrant community of engine re-builders for sharing best-practices, to the best of my knowledge and belief these do not exist in Nigeria - that is certainly a reason for the lack of rebuilding expertise in Nigeria.

That and #7 (lack of the proper tools) and #9 (following a engine rebuild manual) may have caused him to fail though which takes us back to #4. Kashif who recently rebuild his transmission can attest to this, I can recall he had to undergo some training which was not sourced locally.

4, 7 AND 9 LISTED FOR REFERENCE

4. Doing so is both a science and an art, not everyone is a master at both, and we don't feel the need to specialize or become master engine re-builders, we don't believe that is where the money in this business lies and what is more, we have not invested in the education to make us great at this task

7. It is an exacting job that is unforgiving of mistakes, most of us are not that methodical and painstaking, we would suck at it, and we know it and so we had better not even try
