hilaryxoxo:Great! I will reply to your PM ASAP 1. Being a level 3 candidate is a big one! 2. The extra time to plan your apps is also an added advantage 3. Don't let average admission statistics scare you. Yeah those programs are insanely competitive but coming from an African background and being a female (I guess so) are also advantages on up our side. If you check class stats, you'll discover that Africans make up an very small percentage of their class. They want a diverse class and they may want to go below their "standards" to get someone with a unique background in. These schools want to tell the whole world how diverse they are. You can be a case study for them lol. Also, there are very very few females in Finance. So having that too is an advantage for diversity. If you're male, I worries, you are still African lol. 4. But getting that diversity slot is not easy. You have to plan strategically. I'll suggest you try and show passion in your applications. Make sure ALL the admissions officers know you in person. Keep regular conversations with them (at least 3 mails per week and 1 Skype conversation every two weeks). Ask them intelligent questions (not questions on their FAQ). Also discuss your weak academic profile with them and tell them how passionate you are about attending their program. This strategy helped me to get into some very competitive programs and I'll share my email conversations with you. 5. MSFE at Columbia is great. If that's your only wonderful admission offer, you can augment your family contribution with some student loans. Job placements are strong and with good work on your side, you can get a decent job and repay your loans fast. 6. Baruch is not a big name college but their finance program is one of the best on the market and very competitive to enter. If getting a job is your main goal, Baruch is okay. It has location advantage and a very huge reputation. Check Wallstreetoasis and GMATclub for reviews 7. If competition is the reason you're scared of FE, I think you should try it out (smiles). At the end of the day, your main goal is getting a nice job, not competing with some Chinese folks lol. 8. Nah... I'm not proficient in C++. I initially wanted to learn it and follow the FE route but I changed my plans and followed another career path. Will reply your PM |

Hello folks Please I'd like to seek your opinion. Got admission to last month and a tuition deposit of $500 is to be paid after 30 days of admission decision. Contemplating to pay or not as I just received I-20 last week. Any advise? Thinking $500 is too much to throw at something not yet guaranteed. |
| Re: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 13 by Nobody: 2:53pm On May 02, 2018 |
UzzyBreeze:Some schools demand for enrollment deposits. It's normal for some programs. Speak with your admission officer for a waiver. Tell them about your financial constraints and how paying the fee will affect your traveling. If they agree, fine! If they don't, you'll have to pay it else they will terminate your admission. That's how it works |

| Re: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 13 by aadeyi: 3:25pm On May 02, 2018 |
UzzyBreeze: Chidinho10:Wait fess..... I believe the $500 is a token from your normal school fees and its just a guarantee on their side to reserve you a spot. You can email the school and explain to them about how visa works and that you are not sure of the visa outcome yet, hence paying the fee will be a risk. Ask if they have a refund policy in case you are not able to secure a visa, otherwise let them give you a waiver. |

aadeyi:Yeah, it's deposit for securing your seat and it is deducted from your first semester tuition. A lot of schools do it especially business schools. If you don't pay, your seat goes to someone else Some schools waive it while others do not And most times, it is nonrefundable |

Chidinho10:financial constrains for $500 , except if that not the exact words used .........The school would think if $500 is a struggle which is chicken change compared to a school fees, then this person is not serious but yes , i probably would write to the school asking for their refund policy if visa is not given then you know what risk you are willing to take |
| Re: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 13 by Nobody: 3:55pm On May 02, 2018 |
LagosismyHome:Yeah I get your point I actually did that and got a waiver. One school agreed to waive and another school refused. That was why I suggested it. Asking for refund policy is another nice option also. |

nwendujudy:Thanks for the contributions. Exactly my tot. If I complain to them of "just" $500, then may appear unserious and it appears to be the only admission I'll pursue but at the same time, #181,500 will be gone♂️ if the visa no later work out. It is clearly stated as non-refundable though. |

@UzzyBreeze Speak to them. You miss 100% of shots you don't take Explain your financial situation to them. No school will terminate your admission because you pleaded with them to waive your enrollment fee. They have given you 30 days to pay and they can only decline your admission if the 30 days elapses without you paying. I was in a similar situation with a higher fee involved. So my advice is based on my experience. My 2 cents Goodluck! |
