Canadian Workplace Culture

Every culture is has its own norms, including workplace culture. In a Canadian workplace, communication and behaviour may be different than your previous workplaces. Here are some possible differences you should be aware of before you begin a new job in tourism.

Expectations and roles of employees
Be punctual (be prepared to start on time).
Know your roles and responsibilities.
Fulfill your duties and responsibilities.
Work both independently and as a team member.
Show initiative.
Make suggestions and ask questions.
Be able to work well with others (teamwork).
Individualism and self-reliance
Canadian culture can be highly individualistic. Therefore, you may encounter:

Independent decision-making rather than group consultation
Rules and procedures that are emphasized more than relationships
Looser and less permanent relationships between people, compared to other cultures
Performance assessment on an individual basis, rather than as team member
Direct praise and criticism
Work and time
The Canadian approach to work and time may be unfamiliar to you. Typical Canadian attitudes toward work and time include:

A strong division between home life and work life
An emphasis on deadlines rather than on relationships
An emphasis on punctuality and “getting down to business” rather than on building relationships
Status and formality
Canadians can be very informal in work relationships compared to individuals from other countries. Their typical behaviour may include:

A stress on equal opportunity
Saying “no” directly
Emphasizing accomplishments over family background, titles, age or gender
Expecting you to say what you mean more directly

Speaking French to them doesn't necessarily mean they will lose English but will be bilingual, and as you live in Quebec it may give them more opportunities in the future.

You still don't understand. How would he speak English where everyone speaks French?

[quote author=kazchick post=67247625]Dear Team,
Please what are the pre-arrival agencies apart from ACCES that someone can contact for employment mentor-ship and employment connections. I want to maximize my pre-arrival opportunities that would help me land well and get a job in the shortest possible time.

I'm currently with SOPA , so far, I've had an online audio one on one meeting with a counselor to discuss generally. Next step is online prearrival courses. Cheers!

Bros, we are good and you?. They will speak the two languages. I want them to be strong in French before we move to an English environment, there's one about 10 minutes from here.

Hello e-family,

Please for those who submitted int'l passport to Ghana via VFS, kindly confirm if you included the vac consent form?

Also, is there a way to send the vac consent form across to Ghana if it was omitted?

I just noticed this requirement on the VFS website, although it was not stated on the ppr letter.

Thank you in advance.

Please I have a question. When you apply for a new ECA, does that involve having ur school send the same documents they had sent earlier to WES?. Because sending that transcript is one big issue
vascey:

I'm actually at this stage with CPA BC. Got my school to send my transcript but it didn't have a statement saying they awarded a degree. CPA BC requested they send, by courier, a letter stating it explicitly. These guys can be very unreasonable atimes. I contacted CPA BC to find out if they would accept a report from WES, since I had done my ECA, and their answer was affirmative on the condition that it is sent directly by WES.

Unfortunately, WES requires me to initiate a new ECA for the purpose of certifications. WES conditions stipulates that each ECA can only be for one purpose. If you want a report for another purpose such as admission to university, certification etc, you have to initiate another ECA.

I'm still trying to follow up with my school to send the letter since it's cheaper than getting a new WES report.

So I advice you get WES to send a report. If you choose to go through your school, they will need to state categorically that they awarded you a degree, which I doubt they will state unless CPA Ontario are more lenient and understand HND is equivalent to degree.

For me, I just got AOR on Friday so I'm not exactly in a hurry.

I didn't go that route. I applied for transcript.

Can someone go back to home country after becoming a legal immigrant or Canadian citizen and staying some years in Canada? Is it allowed?

Except you committed a crime and ran away, why should it not be allowed?
Unless you renounced your citizenship of your home country.

The Federal Internship Newcomers (FIN) 2018 Program has been opened. It is an internship program for new comers to Canada to enable successful applicants work in the public sector.

I will advise that we all look through the program and apply for as many roles as possible.

Deadline for prequalification April 13?

Deadline for prequalification April 13?

I know that you must have done prequalification before April 13th, 2018. My pre-arrival people ( Acces Employment) did my prequalification assessment.

But for some of the roles, the applicants are redirected to external websites where you can apply directly without the prequalifcation issue I think.

Example - Canada Council for the Arts roles and some other agencies. You need to check through.

Thank you.

Guys, please can a Ghanaian (or Nigerian) passport be renewed in Canada about 1 or 2 years to expiry? I do not want to wait till 6 months to expiry before renewing it.

Hello house, this is a very informative thread. I intend on moving to Canada with my fiance but I'm quite worried about out job prospects since we both have Nigerian degrees and experience. I've learnt that does not hold much weight in Canada. He has 3 years audit experience in a big 4 audit firm. While I have just 1 year experience as a financial analyst. I'm planning on converting my ACCA certification to Canadian CPA. Please where would you advise us to settle and what strategies can we use to increase our prospects. Thank you.
Re: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by ttmacoy: 9:13pm On May 05, 2018
Yes it is allowed. The only thing to be aware of is if a permanent resident you need to make sure you don't flout the requirements for maintaining your status i.e. you must be physically present in Canada for at least 730 days (2 years) in every 5-year period.

If a citizen there is no such restriction and you can go and come as you please.

Hi, I think that relocating is always a big life changing decision for anyone but if you read through this thread from beginning, you'll see that people who relocate actually get jobs.

Your fiance can also explore the option of an internal transfer if his company has a Canadian office.

For info on the process for relocation to Canada, please visit this page https://www.nairaland.com/4472519/canadian-express-entry-federal-skilled

I can happily tell you that you do not need to contact your school again. All you have to do is sign back onto WES, and request for a report upgrade. Please ensure its a Course-by-Course evaluation. The full cost (including getting a copy and sending one to CPA) will be about CAD163 (all inclusive).

So therefore its not easy for an old person (immigrant) with permanent residency or a canadian citizen to travel to his initial home country to retire.
Re: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by ttmacoy: 2:09pm On May 06, 2018
For a Canadian citizen there is no restriction so he/she can. For a permanent resident I will advice you become a citizen first to remove any risk of losing your residency. Nigeria and Canada allows dual citizenship so no harm compared to India who doesn't and adds extra complexity.

Tbh after about 5 years as a resident you are eligible for citizenship anyway so by the time retirement age comes (depending on when the person migrated) you should have been a citizen.

Alternatively if the person is old he/she many not really need the residency anymore and will be happy to retire permanently in Nigeria so no harm.

You can. You just have to make sure you meet the residency requirements in you're a PR. As a citizen you have the right to enter any time you want. Nobody can deny you entry into Canada. Lastly you won't retire in naija. Not full time any way. You'd be insane too.

Hello guys,

I just joined this forum as I've been a viewer for a while, I want to ask, what are the chances of a banker (operations) going into consulting/audit (big 4 likes) in canada? what steps can one take to move in that direction?

Are any transferable paths in both professions?
