What are the effects of the current price of crude oil in the international market on petroleum marketing stocks?

Effect should be NIL but in Nigeria where there is high level of ignorance people will assume that high crude oil price benefits the petroleum marketing sector.

In real life, high crude oil price affect downstream oil companies negatively

They did....and its brewed here in Naija. During the conference call about 3 weeks ago, their MD said it took a while for New York to approve the local brew after several iterations using enhanced local raw materials.

It surely will reverse and then go up again. That will be its random walk till something external impacts it.

Since Petrol price is regulated, annual subsidy budget is fixed in advance, and crude oil price is free to roam up and down, it will be a negative for petroleum marketing stocks.

They cant immediately transfer additional cost of importation, have to borrow more to import petroleum or buy from nnpc and incur higher interest expense for longer period especially when subsidy payment is delayed. Right now they are between a rock and a hard place and i am looking at Eterna and MRS who have year on year positive variance in profitability more closely.

Not entirely the case.
The downstream players can also reap some positives from the upsurge in oil price;
In truth, their margins will likely continue to struggle because fuel is largely a subsidized product in Nigeria.
However, diesel, lubricants and household gas which are basically by-products of crude oil will largely drive their earnings. ...especially if there is an increase in their prices (...keep a keen eye on that).
So in the absence of any likely shock, I think the expected earnings drive if well managed, will flow down to impact positively on their bottom line.

Seplet is undoubtedly the best placed to reap from the current surge in oil price.
Oando would've also been well placed if not for an inefficient management and the current woes facing the company.
FO, CONOIL and ETERNA are also a bit well placed. ...I particularly like CONOIL.
Although it does seem that MRS OIL and FO are better placed to benefit from some future plays in the sector.

However, I agree that an increase in oil price does not translate to a positive for the petroleum marketers.

Qualification date is the date for closure of register and only the names that appear in the register as at COB that date will be paid (dividend) while the markdown date is the date the dividend is deducted from the share price, usually the next working day as soon as market opens.

In the case of Fidelity: Qualification date is 11th May, 2018 and Markdown date is 14th May, 2018.

Me na learner o. cheesy

I have also found this a bit confusing too. Fidelity's Qualification Date is 11th of May, Closure of register is 14th-18th of May and Payment date is on the 25th. What does the Closure of register mean?

onegentleguy:

There has always been the slight misconception on how best to differentiate between Qualification date and Closure of register.
But the truth is that as investors our concern should only be with just one of this process, which is the former.
...because the later isn't really of any core benefit to us.
For the sake of those who still see confusion in the mix, I shall make an attempt to clear things up.
But before I do that, let's try and define the 2 terms, shall we;

Qualification date- This is simply the last day for which a prospective investor can purchase a share in anticipation of receiving any dividend or bonus (script issue) following the declaration of result by a listed company.

Closure of registrar- This is the period within which a company updates its register/database with the view of determining the no of shareholders eligible or qualified for a dividend or bonus.

Now let's break it down further a bit;
1st on Qualification date;
Note that it is just A SPECIFIC DATE. ...JUST A DAY (ie 3rd of Aprill ).
From the definition, it simply means that for one to QUALIFY or in other words partake of a dividend or bonus, u have to PURCHASE that share from ur target company ON OR BEFORE THE SPECIFIED DATE. ...or SELL AT LEAST A DAY AFTER THE SPECIFIED DATE.
...and so any purchase/sale made after the period explained for both buy and sale will be deemed ineligible.

Now on Closure of register;
Note that unlike qualification date, it is usually a range of days (ie 4-9th of Aprill ...though in rare cases, might also be a single day).
From the definition, this is just the day(s) when the company gets to work to update their register with a view to ascertaining those eligible for any coperate declaration(s) made. (ie ...including those who bought on or before the qualification date and excluding those who sold).
...this is why often times, u may hear statements like 'those whose names appear in the register of booklet on ... ...

From the explanations above, it therefore means that as investors, our basis for concern should only be with the QUALIFICATION DATE (...whether we are qualified to partake or not), and not THE CLOSURE OF REGISTER (...which is clearly a matter for the company).
Now there might sometimes be a few cases where the QUALIFICATION DATE is the same as the 1st day within the range of days for the CLOSURE OF REGISTER (ie qualification date 8th March. ... closure of register 8-11th of March).
In this scenerio, the company plans to immediately start out with updating their register on the last day of qualification.
...well if they wish to, then that's a matter for them. ...ur only concern is to make sure u are eligible for anything declared whether u are buying or selling. ...and how do u do that? ...just ensure u bought ON OR BEFORE THE QUALIFICATION DATE or u sold AT LEAST A DAY AFTER THE QUALIFICATION DATE.
Using the declaration from that of zenith bank 2017 YE result (qualification date April 3rd. ...closure of register April 4-9th), the buyer must buy on or before April 3rd to qualify, while the seller has to sell at least a day after April 3rd. ...that is, from April 4th upwards to qualify.
Notice how the seller can sell even within the days of the closure of register or anytime after it, while the buyer can not because he only has until the exact day of qualification to make his purchase if he wants to be eligible.
One other important point to note is the scenerio where an investor sold on the exact day of qualification. ...in this case, the buyer he sold to takes precedence and therefore qualifies ahead of the seller.

CONCLUSION:
As an investor, what should interest u should only be the QUALIFICATION DATE.
In summary, to qualify for any declaration, just note the QUALIFICATION DATE and BUY ON OR BEFORE THAT DATE or SALE AT LEAST A DAY AFTER THAT DATE.

So the next time u purchase or wish to sell a share from a company with a dividend or bonus in view, just concentrate and concern urself only with the QUALIFICATION DATE and forget about the closure of register.

...Unless of curse u are one of those handling the said companys register or database. wink cheesy

hope this helps some persons out there.

Read this past post my dear.
...same goes to anyone who sees confusion in the mix.

Time will tell, with situation at hand, I strongly believed that it's sustainable, their q2 will speak more for them.
They are one of the stock to watch.
This is how I started advertising northern movement of Dangoteflour at sub #4, Eternal at sub #3, CCNN, Okomo oil etc.
And it come to pass, I don't have much interest in them, but all I know is that the stock has wake up with full force goes by their EPS,
even when one deducted (OCI) other comprehensive income for the year, their EPS after tax still remain over 100% growth compared with their 2017, q1.
I see them heading to northern pole soon, with massive movement after 2018 q2 result. I base my research and my findings, based on fact on the ground, not sentiment.
Go once again, through their 2017 final, and their q1 2018 result. That shows that government has start to favour them with contract, and they are moving.
Their growth in PAT, q1 2018 was above 100% compared with 2017 q1 .
I have noticed that since u started fanning jb flames the price just does not want to drop, i bought first trench by feb @ #23, and i4 just does not want to retest that 23# price again.....I want to load more
