Like I said earlier, I’d say again; apply to the best school your profile can afford.
A lot of people here have modest profiles. >300 in GRE, 4.0 GPA, yet they’d apply to schools that are not even ranked. I never said everyone should apply to Harvard or Stanford or MIT. I remember saying the minimum threshold should be the top 1000 in the world. Why would you carry your hard earned money and go to a school that has no ranking?

ALL I’M SAYING IS STOP SETTLING FOR MEDIOCRITY. Yes, University of Ibadan is well ranked than some of the schools that have been mentioned here. People are blinded by the fact that it’s USA.

Wake up, not all schools in the USA are worth it. Do your research and aviloid mediocrity.

Cheers

seeker88:

Hey, keep wallowing in your ignorant....
And for your information, there’s no school as “Texas A&M the Kingston one” .....if you can’t do research about schools in the US, then just shut the Bleep up, and refrain from discouraging people here. Not everyone can afford to go to MIT and the likes.
And as someone has rightly pointed out, school ranking doesn’t automatically secure your dream job, you have to work towards getting such job irrespective of your school ranking.
For example, I came across a student from UPenn who’s looking for Summer Internship, meanwhile, many students from TAMUK which you perceived as a dead school got offers from Intels/IBM during the last NSBE convention/career fair in Pittsburgh.....
The bottom line is; u don’t choose school based on how it sounds to you. If MIT, Vanderbilt, etc are the schools that pleases you, you don’t have publicly condemn other schools that you don’t even know about. I repeat, If you are not informed, just keep shut....
If you aren’t ignorant, you would never try to compare any accredited university here in the US with Unilag and your Covenant University....you are only exposing your ignorance further.

Finally, my advice to prospective applicants. Just ensure that your school/program is accredited, get the right skill sets in your desired field, build a very good resume and you will be good for job/internships opportunities here. Those so called lowly ranked school will help you unleash your potential that you might never discover if you keep waiting in Nigeria to get into the top/Ivy League schools.

USA has >5,200 higher institutions. Every year only about 200 make it to top 1000 THE or QS ranking which is less than 5% of the total number. Therefore any Nigerian university who makes it to top 1000 is actually ranked higher than 95% of American universities.
At surface, this sounds bogus but this is the ugly truth. I wonder why some peeps keep attending schools like that.

Well articulated. You are kinda nice though. IF you have a GOOD profile, anything below 200 DON'T apply. #FightMediocrity.

Hmmmmm.. break it down more
Re: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 13 by hilaryxoxo(f): 10:12pm On May 15, 2018
Just so we are all on the same page. Check this ranking https://www.timeshighereducation.com/world-university-rankings/2018/world-ranking#!/page/0/length/25/name/Ibadan/sort_by/rank/sort_order/asc/cols/stats

University of Ibadan is between 800th - 1000th. But there are tons of schools that have been mentioned on this thread that aren’t even on the list!
In other words, based on the ranking, University of Ibadan is technically better than those schools.

You now wake up one day and want to go and spend money in a school that would technically not add any value to you Why not just stay in Nigeria and do a professional exam? ICAN? ACCA??

You can even learn certain skill set online for FREE. You can learn python on Data Camp or Edx. Infact, many of the programs on Edx were put together by elite organizations like Microsoft, World Bank and Harvard.

That money, you can go on AliExpress and start a business or learning a vocation.

WAKE UP

All that glitters is not gold. It’s not all about just leaving Nigeria for leaving Nigeria sake. It’s about rebranding yourself. It’s about building your profile. It’s about positioning yourself for better opportunities and promotions.

DONT SETTLE FOR LESS.

Thank you oh.
Personally, I won’t even do outside #100

#FightMediocrity

Yes the course matters too. A lot of people here jump at courses that aren’t even marketable. If someone should talk now, they won’t let the person rest.

It’s so painful because nairaland is very popular. Newbies can come here and just jump at some of the “schools” they see “flying around”

Whether low or high ranked school........... most people just want to use the students root to escape this shitlole country, while the degree comes in handy, and if H1b is not forthcoming with the degree obtained in this low ranked schools, they just marry a citizen or find a way to regularise their stay.
Hell is full, Nigeria is an extension site.
But I am an advocate of Good schools and marketable course

The reason why many of us pursue graduate school is very different.

Some is to get an MSc just for the heck of it,
Some for the job prospect, some for immigration, some for personal development, some for the experience.

I was actually generous with 200 lol.

In fact, if you are enrolling for the so called "non-marketable courses," the more reason to attend a top school. At least, a top school can offset such circumstance.

. True but If anyone's mission falls into personal development/job prospect bracket an unranked school should be a no go area.

Before i start..
Note of Advice , which has been said here many times
Make sure you have genuine answers to most of the questions asked

While on the queue you'll obviously over hear one or two things

1. VO Asked a fellow why he's going for
pharmacy..
He said he wants to help people(right there, I knew
he didn't soji)
VO asked why do you want help people...
He said he cares for people...
I just stopped listening at that point cuz I wasn't
down for any negative energy

2. Pls and pls , As stated so many times here... When asked how you got to know about the school.. they dont want to hear msinus or internet ish..
Make sure you have a legit fellow who you heard about the school from..

VO asked this fellow how he got to know about the school and he called the name of a person.. the VO then told the guy to spell the name while he checked his database..
They have all this info on their server.. so be careful if you plan on using someone whose been through their system

3. Have read cases where people got away cuz they pretended not to be able to speak English.. you'll be surprised the VO attending to you knows how to speak Yoruba, igbo etc.. witnessed it today

So here my goes my TRANSCRIPT

VO: tell me about your program

Me: My program is in Masters in Chemical Engineering at Tamuk. It requires 24 credit hours .. 18hours in a major and 6hrs in a minor

VO: tell me about your academic background

Me: I did chemical engineering in my undergraduate (Vo cuts in: ooh chemical engineering , i said YES) and I graduated last year July.

VO: Why didn't you do NYSC

Me: I want to focus more on my education at this point and be done with it (he smiled at this point).

VO: so what will this degree do for you..
All this while he wasn't looking at me.. but after asking this question.. He stopped and looked at me

Me: I'll be bringing my U.S degree back to Nigeria to apply for jobs(started nodding his head) at P&G, GSK ( He was just looking me in the eye and leaning closer to hear more) chevron, shell to name a few because a U.S. degree has an excellent international reputation (kept on nodding And typing) which will make me a valuable asset and give me an edge over my colleagues (just kept on nodding and nodding) when I get back to Nigeria

Vo: how many schools did you apply two

Me: 2

Vo: what was the other one

Me: Lamar uni

VO: why Tamuk

Me: I almost choked here... I chose Tamuk basically for two major reasons. 1. they offer a concentration in renewable energy which is in line with my career goal of being a specialist in energy 2. They now have a natural gas dept which is combined with the chemical engineering dept and spearheaded by the same director. Dr. ******** whom I called and confirmed from

VO: whose sponsoring you

Me: my dad

Vo: what does he do

Me: he does this and that

Vo: let me see his statement..

Me: handed it over to him..

then he said they are not showing his name but business name...
showed him a reference letter that showed his name as the owner of the account.
Told him he's a sole proprietor of his business..

VO asked if he didn't have staffs he pays to cuz the money could be expenditures
Said No, just his PA and driver.. He handles everything himself..

Then he gave me back the statement to show him popc name cuz I said I can show him his name..
So I showed him his withdrawals on the accounts and he says he can see all that.. he just wants too see his own name on the title of the account..

Then he said I should either change the name on the account or transfer all the money to a new account with his name on it and follow some instructions on one white paper like that and send additional documents supporting the account through DHL to them and Gave me a case number

Then he returned my passport..

Personally the guy okay..
Na people way just dey go WINDOW 2 I pity..

The lady has no chills

MODIFIED: he asked if I took any standardised test.
Told him both GRE AND TOEFL

UPDATE:

Submitted my passport back at the drop off with a fixed deposit slip in my dad's name this time and it was finally issued today
