Newton proposed his own model of the universe. For all intents and purposes, it held true, at least for the level of scientific discovery during his time.
Years later, Einstein showed its limitations.
Was Newton a liar? Do we insult his theories and propositions?
No wise man would. We seek to understand more and build on it.
Same with religion. You cannot pick the Bible and decide to vilify the God of the Bible because some 6 million Jews died in gas chambers.
You do not have the faintest idea of the concept of free-will.
Even with science, Heisenberg proposed the limitations to measuring some quantities as absolutes in relation to other quantities.

Religion has its shortcomings. As science does. Just as magicians utilize science and illusions to control an audience, religious leaders do too. Some abuse that power, others don't.

Back in the days when I was still religious, we use to pray against every evil thing in the food. We pray to God to cleanse and bless the food and to the best of my knowledge, this kind of prayer still subsist.

The default setting in any religion is fear. Once you overcome the fear that enemies are lucking around to poison or put evil things in your food, you will realise the silliness of praying to God to bless/cleanse your food before every meal.

Prayer before meal is said to show gratitude for the meal. Think about the people who contributed to make that meal a possibility: the farmers who planted and harvested the raw food, the people who processed it, the logistics people, the stress they pass through. So, we thank God for providing for us and as well appreciate the efforts of the people that contributed to the meal. That's the reason people are admonished not to waste food.
