Proposed Visa Interview

VO: Where are you going/why are you going to the US?
Me: I am going to Eastern Illinois University for my Masters in Cyber Security
VO: What do you study in your undergraduate and when did you graduate?
Me: I studied Computer Science and I graduated in January 2015
VO: What have you been doing ever since?
ME: I have been working as a Network Engineer at Bleep even before I graduate and when I graduated I was promoted to the post of Senior Network Engineer II. I am responsible for the training of new staffs, setting up internet network for the University, troubleshooting and fixing issues with LAN(Local Area Network), repairing of faulty computers and also helps in the uploading of questions to update the database of Bleep Server.
VO: How many school did you apply to and how many gave you admission?
ME: I applied to three schools and they all gave me admission
VO: List them
ME: Eastern Illinois University, Wright State University and Eastern Michigan University
VO: Why Eastern Illinois University, How did you get to know about Eastern Illinois University?
ME: Apart from the fact that Eastern Illinois University was recommended to me by my boss in the office who is an alumni of the school, Eastern Illinois University is ranked 8 in Top Public School and also ranked 51in the Midwest and it is one of the best University in my field of interest in the United State. The curriculum of Eastern Illinois University matches with my career interest and EIU offers more specification in Cyber security like System security, hardware security, facility security and so on.
More so the University have well equipped Laboratory which i confirm from Professor Rigoberto Chinchilla and Professor David Wayne. Moreso Prefessor Lie Peter and Professor Chinchilla are interested in my research topic which is "Ethical Hacking and Cybersecurity in Nigeria Telecommunication Industries: Issues and Solution" So i believed the two Professors will help me in achieving my aim and also i will learn more from them.
Lastly the tuition fee is much more affordable and it is in-line with my dad's budget.

VO: Why USA?
ME: The quality of education in United States is much impeccable than UK or Canada. Syllabus in U.S offers the right blend of theoretical and practical knowledge which we will not be able to possess anywhere in this world, I need international exposure and USA being the center of inventions and innovations, I could not think of a better place.
VO: Tell me your study plan/Tell me about cybersecurity at Eastern Illinois University/What is your study intent?
ME: I will be doing a total credit of 32credit hours in 2years after which I will return to Nigeria to continue my job. Some of the courses includes: cybersecurity, system security, biometric security, facility security, database security and reliability, networking and advance data communication etc.
VO: Amongst those mentioned courses, which of them is of more interest to you?... and why?
ME: Cybersecurity and System security. Because as a Network Engineer, it forms the major part of my job that I do day to day.
VO: How much is your tuition and who is sponsoring you?
ME: My tuition is 14, 973, living expenses 10,546. The school’s estimated budget for me in a year is around 25,519. My dad is my sponsor.
VO: What does he do?
ME: He is a successful business man, he is into Real Estate and also own a gas station in Ogun State.
VO: Are you married?
ME: Yes I am married with a son
VO: how will your certificate help your career?
ME: At present am working at the ICT department of Bleep as a Network Engineer, a Master’s degree at this time will equip me on the technical and business skills that i needed to create, plan and build a secure and scalable network. These degree also will elevate me in my place of work and make me a better cyber security professional and a good network architect. It will also give me room to apply for jobs in top IT companies in Nigeria.
VO: what will you do after you graduate?
ME: After my degree, I will return to Nigeria to continue my job at National Open University of Nigeria and also apply to apply to big companies like EFCC where I have been longing to work and help with fighting cyber treat. Also I will set up an IT firm where i can tutor Nigerians who have passion for cybersecurity.

Please help me scrutinize my response

Bro, it's just an opinion oh grin grin. For why this university question, I believe you don't need to include ranking. What if the V.O directs a question like "why did you not apply to the remaining 50 schools that are better in the Midwest? Play safe bro

For the second, she was so impressed and all smiles while asking the regular questions and I responded until she logged my details and read previous VO comments and suddenly asked why a masters (which was an excuse and doesn't make common sense because she had already asked level of study and why Business Analytics and I had explained) and how many kids I have and said I'm sorry..... I quickly tried to say kids are no longer accompanying but she didn't just listen.

I'm not interested in reapplying. I decided to share my experience to help families plan their application. I'm grateful

I was behind you this morning, and sincerely you did everything right, even I was impressed with your eloquence and answers. I am sorry it wasn't granted but with the help of gurus on this platform, you can make some adjustments, carefully think about your decision not to apply again and I hope you will change your mind. Thank you for sharing your experience with the aim of helping others. I wish you the very best.

Gurus should help vet this proposed transcript ;

Note: no travel history, graduated 2009, not married, no kids, have 6 years work experience....5 of those as a business data analyst in a microfinance bank

Where r u going? I am going to prairie view a&m university in Texas for my masters program in computer science and my concentration is computer information systems

Tell me about ur study plan? My concentration is comp info systems which focuses on the use data analysis and information systems tools to improve efficiency. Ill be taking a total of 36 credit hours. Some of d core courses include; blablablabalabla just to mention a few. My elective course plan will be tailored to give me a deep insight into machine learning, artificial intelligence and improve my knowledge of electronic commerce. Ill also be exposed to software engineering and development which is a skill I need to develop.

Why Comp info systems? Or what will dis program do for u? Having trained and worked in the Nigerian banking industry as a business data analyst, a masters degree in cis at this point of my career would equip me with d technical skills needed to plan and design a data analysis algorithm that will determine the eligibility of clients to access credit facilities. I will have d capacity to develop an automated system using machine learning algorithms to examine n analyse pre existing data of clients in order to generate new useful information. I will also have d required skill to design software that can determine customers preference and purchase behaviour in order to improve service delivery to clients. When I return to Nigeria after my program I will have d requisite skills n exposure to advance my career as a biznes data analyst as I'll be qualified to take up a senior data analyst role in any Nigerian organization.

How many schools did u apply to? 3.

Name dem? Bowie state uni, univ of Texas at dallas and prairie view a&m uni.

So why prairie view? I chose prairie view because the computer information system curriculum at the department integrates data science and electronic commerce into the study plan. This will give me a well rounded experience to take up a senior data analyst role in any organization when I return to Nigeria after my program. Pvamu also has a data mining research lab and d faculty is actively conducting research activities in Big data, machine learning and artificial intelligence. These facilities will be invaluable for my study. And m in contact with Dr xxxx of d cis department about my research interests and he is willing to work with me on my proposed research topic

Why r u switching fields physics to CIS? I switched fields immediately after my undergraduate study solely becos I discovered my interest n motivation lies in the field of computing and data analysis and I have made conscious effort in this regard by taking database administration courses at an IT training institute. (At dis point I intend to hand out my sql test score result) now I believe the time is right to follow up with a higher study in order to advance my career in this field.

Any standardized test? Yes I wrote GRE with a score of 308

Who's sponsoring u? My sister
What does ur sister do? She's into Event management and catering services for corporate organizations and individuals.

It has a good foundation so build on the delivery .... most interviews are short but your answers are long so be ready for the VO to cut you off and go to the next question. Best of luck
Re: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 13 by angrynaijachiq: 8:42pm On Jun 04, 2018
A bit of a background. I travelled to the US for the first time early last year on a tourist visa. I was on leave, had a few cash to spare and just decided to take a chance. There was a safety conference holding in Houston at that time and so I decided to attend that while visiting. Applied, went for my interview at the Lagos Embassy and was approved. Wasn't asked for any documents. After that visit I was bent on studying abroad, the experience opened my eye to a good opportunity for a better life.
I did my research, applied to an average school and got admission. An excoursemate of mine did his interview in Abuja and was approved. He advised that Abuja was not as crowdy as Lagos and said I had a better chance there. I carried my big head and went to Abuja in March for my interview.
Heres my transcript;
VO: Your passport pls (no greeting)
*passed my passport and I-20 but was getting nervous from his hostile countenance*
VO: What are you travelling for?
Me: I'm travelling for a Masters in Project Management at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology
VO: Why Harrisburg?
Me:The MS Project Management at Harrisburg University allows students to choose concentration in areas that are at the forefront of best practices in the world of project management. I am particularly interested in the Agile Lean concentration and how I can apply it in light of the sweeping changes in the energy industry as a result of the new Petroleum Industry Bill.

VO: How many schools did you apply to?
Me: 3. HU, SIT and MU

VO: How many offered you admission
Me: I have admission from both HU and SIT but I am yet to get a response from MU. Since I have what I need in HU I went ahead with my visa application for HU.

VO: What stood out about HU, why did you choose it over MU?
Me:Besides its experienced faculty, the Masters in Project Management at Harrisburg University allows me to complete the PMP certification course and the CAPM. Additionally, it is tailored towards students who are seeking career advancement in the field of project management.

*he keeps typing for a while and I'm just staring awkwardly thinking "ask me questions now". Then he goes
VO:Aren't you concerned that HU is loosing accreditation?
*This totally threw me off balance because to my knowledge the school was fully accredited and that further increased my nervousness.
Me: Ermmm, No

VO: How did you carry out your research?
Me: I made use of internet search engines, linkedIn and the PMI website

VO : Sorry, you do not meet the requirements for visa approval..... blah blah blah
*Honestly Abuja was a demoralizing experience. All that cash spent on Hotel, flight and co. The VOs only gave one person the white slip that I was aware of, they were soo cold with an aura of superiority. I felt like such an idiot.

Fastforward to Last month. I was advised to choose another school by friends and even nairalanders but honestly they were either too expensive or just too 'bleh' for my liking. I contacted the school, they assured me that they were fully accredited and even sent their accreditation documents and licenses to me. I took all these and booked myself another interview. Even though my dad was my sponsor I couldn't get him to give me his bank statement for either interviews (polygamous family wahala). Most of the transcripts I was seeing had people showing their sponsors bank statements, so I was scared. Went along with my own personal bank statement which had a closing balance of 3million naira. I wasn't even sure what I planned to do with it because I had filled out my dad as my sponsor in the DS160 form. I just decided to dress really well sha cause I remembered during my B1/B2 interview the VO complimented my shirt. I also know I feel more confident when I look good. That turned out to be a mess too because my shoes were too high, legs were aching me, all that standing and queuing, had to hold my shoes in my hand and walk barefoot while inside. People on the queue were smiling at me like "Aunty, wear your shoe now". As soon as i was called to the window I put my shoes on and went there, leaned towards the VO for balance.

VO: Good morning, how are you doing?
Me: I'm great, thank you.

VO:Your passport and i20 pls
*passed them

VO:What are you travelling for?
Me: Im travelling for a masters in Project Management at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology with a focus on Agile Lean Concentration.

VO:Whats your highest educational qualification?
Me: I have a BSc in Real Estate Management from the University of Lagos.

VO: How does your degree relate to project management
Me: REM is a very broad course with diverse career opportunities like portfolio management, agency, property valuation, property management, development and of course project management. During my undergraduate program I took courses such as...

VO:*cuts me off* What have you been doing since graduation?
Me: After Graduation I went for the compulsory NYSC program, then I worked at XYZ & Co estate surveyors for a year after which I joined my current company- ABC oil servicing Company. I have been with them for 4 years and have served in 2 position. Firstly a Procurement officer and now an assistant Procurement Manager.

VO: Have you travelled out of the country before?
Me: Yes, I travelled early last year as a representative of my company at the XYZ Safety Conference

VO: Did you write any qualification exam?
Me: I wrote the TOEFL exam and had a score of 116/120

VO: Nice, who will be sponsoring you?
Me: My dad

VO: What does he do?
Me: He is a structural engineer and a fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers. He owns his engineering company and invests in real estate.

VO: Your visa has been approved. Pick up your passport at.........
*picked my shoe up and left happily*

Sorry for the long story, Im in a new country, don't have friends here so I'm kind of bored, LOL

O! Good to know someone witnessed it all. I could sense the shock in the que when I was denied. It was because I previously added my entire family. She wasn't aware till she logged in and immediately asked if I had kids. She then picked up the blue paper and if you witnessed, I was trying to explain that they won't be accompanying me anymore but she refused to listen.
I shared my experience to help other families. Thanks for your words of encouragement. This is highly appreciated, but No I won't be reapplying. The process is biased and discriminatory. I should be judged on the basis of my qualifications to undertake a masters and not based on my status as a Nursing mom who has to drag along her little kids. If I can score a 308 in my GRE, get an admit in a well recognized school and earn the Dean's excellence scholarship as a Nursing mom, then I should deserve an F1 student Visa as the singles do.

VISA APPROVED ON FRIDAY (JUNE 1ST) at the Lagos consulate.

I came up few days ago about the fact that I will be going for the visa interview with my wife, and asked of the best response to a question. To be sincere, all the response to the question was discouraging, except the response I got from theamericana, and I really appreciate him/her for that. I was scared because of what i heard earlier about ones inabilibility to book appointment till after 6 month if denied. I know of two people who were in the same situation as mine (last year and this year), and they got the visa with their spouse. After reading the responses to my last question, I thought of it that, if I have 99.9% chances of getting the visa because I have full funding for my phd, then the VO would rather accept both of us, than give us a rejection. I then decided that I won’t come here until I have my testimony. I must however let you know that it is just GOD and His favour. Got to the embassy by few minutes to 6 for a 6:30 appointment, and there were many people there already. Waited for few minutes before they started attending to us. Did all the screening and was our turn to be interviewed (that was about 7:40). A new VO just pooped up in window 7 and we were the second person he interviewed (He rejected the first person). Our transcript goes thus.
VO: Good morning
ME: Good morning sir.
VO: pass me your documents.
ME: Passed the documents.
VO: What are you going to do in the United States?
ME: gave a short into of myself, told him where I work, and told him I am here because I got a full phd scholarship in XYZ university (VO cuts in, and checked my I20 very well).
VO: I see (referring to the fact that I have full funding and nodded his head).
ME: Yea.
AFTER GETTING TO KNOW THAT, HE JUST RELAXED AND STARTED ASKING SIMPLE QUESTIONS.
VO: which school did you have ur bsc?
ME: XYZ University.
VO: which school did you have ur msc?
ME: XYZ University.
VO: Which area did u want to specialize in ur phd.
ME: made mention.
VO: Mention some economist in that field.
ME: Mentioned.
VO: Have you travelled to the united states before.
ME: No, I’ve not had a need to.
TURNED TO MY WIFE.
VO: Madam, do you want to follow your husband to the US?
RES: Yes.
VO: Do you have kids yet?
RES: No.
VO: Who is going to sponsor your trip.
RES: My husband.

VO CHECKED THE I20 TO CONFIRM AND TURNS TO ME.
VO: You need a proof of $5000 for your wife, do you have it there?
ME: Yes (Already trying to sight the folder I kept it, thinking he would ask)
VO: I am going to approve your visa, welcome to the United States
VO TOOK OUR PASSPORTS, PASSED THE I20 AND WHITE PAPER, AND STARTED TELLING ME ON WHERE TO PICK UP THE VISA AND THE NEED TO TAKE THE I20 ALONG WHEN TRAVELLING.

I MUST TELL YOU THE TRUTH, IT WAS GOD THAT DID THE WORK, WE PRAYED AND FASTED ERNESTLY. THE MAN BEFORE US HAS BEEN TO THE UNITED STATES BEFORE, INFACT HE DID SOME DIPLOMA STUDIES THERE, YET THE YOUNG VO STILL DENIED HIM, BUT WE WENT THERE WITH A BLANK PASSPORT, AND HE APPROVED IT.

Congratulations and I wish you the very best
