~Story of a quiet Yoruba Demon~
Chapter 3

Just few weeks to WAEC examination, you can literally see the glee on everyone's face, it seems I am not the only one nursing the idea of liberalisation. school activities has heightened ginormously, but unfortunately for the ss3 students, we were having intense classes and ostracised from participating in any school activity due to our forthcoming exam, it seems this is the period that teachers are remembering that we haven't been taught a particular topic or not.
Even non teaching staffs are caught up in the rush hour

'precarious times need precarious measures' as our principal would say.

Even the lackadaisical students are all striving to be at par with others.

Almost all the ss3 students can be seen in school as early as 7:20am and seen going back home haggard around 5pm.

'Tolu, wait for me after closing, let's go home together, I want to reach your area, dad told me to collect an item from your mum' Isaac said.

This statement coming from Isaac made me happy, I won't just go home alone today, having Isaac by my side would make the journey to be more fun. It wasn't until 5:20pm before we finished our biometric scanning for that day, we were told that anyone who doesn't want to be captured can kiss the WAEC exam goodbye because without doing the biometric, one won't be allowed into the exam hall in the first place .

After I was through with mine, I searched for Isaac. Trying to look into every nooks and crannies of the school because he finished his capturing exercise before me.

I knew he can't go home without me, especially when his father ordered him to meet my mum.

It wasn't long before I saw him in one of the unoccupied classes which is not too far from where the biometric exercise is being done with kike, canvassing; judging by the way they stood facing each other.

Then, I made a gesticulation signalling my presence, Emm emm emm (Clears throat)
Both eyes darted sharply at me, kike knowing I came for Isaac had to excuse us , I made sure she was out of earshot before I razed heaven on Isaac with words.

'Isaac, you know I don't like going home late, leave kike alone, you will see her tomorrow' I said with disdain visibly written on my face.'

'Tolu, why acting up for me, okay, I am not following you home again' he said in a jocose manner.

Ah, your are not following me home and you kept me waiting, okay, stay with kike and see if your dad won't hear of this.

'Ahn Ahn Ahn, Tolu, I will kill you if you should say anything or insinuate it when you come to my house and...'

I didn't allow him to complete his statement before I told him to be fast and round things up.
kike could be seen not too far away staring gawkingly at me, she sees me as a threat. There is this apothegm about people that are taciturn, It is clear she believes in such fables and digested it hook, line and sinker.
Besides, she once drafted an error ridden love letter to me weeks ago, how I wish she knew Isaac knows about it and because he is a badass than I am, he vowed to 'enter' her before the end of our WAEC exam to tell her that it's not good to mess around with two friends.

Sighting her, I gave her a sheepish smile, indicating I am through with Isaac and she can come to finish her discussions with my boisterous friend.

I patted Isaac on his shoulder and went outside to wait for him, it wasn't upto 5 minutes before Isaac came out with triumphant look conspicuously decorated on his face.

Did I tell you that Isaac is my cousin? Well, he is not JUST a cousin but the cutest guy in my class or so they say, according to girls lucid perception in the school.

Some said I am too quiet, therefore I will be wicked, stingy and also has the tendency of being a green snake in a green grass. Not to my face though, but hey! Rumours go round.

It's only the intelligent card I am holding over him and that doesn't mean he isn't intelligent. Should I take the 1st position, check Isaac in the second or third position and you will see saheed; the muslim father, occupying the fourth or third position.

'Tolu, let's go...'

'Isaki, why are you smiling like this, what did she say?' I responded .

'Tolu, don't worry, I told you I am going to swim in her ocean, she just gave me a date that her boat will be sailing and she doesn't mind me being on board to paddle her boat to the island of pleasure. '

We were still discussing about kike in our usual esoteric manner while walking home.

' Isaki, I just hope this her boat you want to sail won't capsize before you get to bay' teasing him

''Taaarh!!! It can never capsize. Don't you hear what the bible said, it says 'we shall soar like an Eagle and never stumble... '

Aaaah Aaaaah, Yeeeee!!! o ma pami si bi ni oo, o ni lo sibi kankan, sebi oni agbara ni(Crying amidst tears- 'You will kill me here, you are going no where, you have power right?')

Her wail was what interrupted our discussion, we looked up just to see a girl of our distinguished school, dragging the clothe of a guy who is from the neighbouring school, the guy was ramming her with some backsliding slaps.

' Ehn, we quickly approached them, the girl immediately intensified her voice when she saw us approaching '

When we got to where they are, I asked 'Hey, what happened?'

The girl is in ss1 as indicated by the number of button on her chest, in tears, she narrated how the guy he was holding told her to pass the other lane but she refused saying the guy has no right to tell her where to pass.

When she told him this, the guy slapped and started punching her.

While she was narrating, she already release her firm grip on the guy, who was now standing with 5 of his friend, staring indifferently at us but with their mischievous disposition waiting for the girl to finish lamenting.

The thing is, Apex high school is located near an express road, a state road to be precise and a gutter with a narrow walking space demarcating the road from the school's gate. It is understandable that a limited number of persons can pass at the same time, as the fourth person would have to cross to the other side if they are to pass in unison.

The guys could have easily created a mini space for the girl to pass and there would be no qualms, besides, the road is nearer to our school, so, the girl should have been permitted to pass in between them.

On hearing this, Isaac went forward to listen to the other side of the story from the boys angle. He asked the boy what transpired that made her to be beating the girl

.................

'You dey craze? You dey mad? You wan die for her, who you be self?' The boy hollered vexingly at Isaac.

The way he respond infuriated Isaac.

'Bros, wetin happen, why you beat that girl' Isaac repeated , neglecting the use of queen's English.

It was as if I was watching a movie.

Before Isaac could say JACK, the boy tapped him boldly on his chest.

His single action gave Isaac the momentum that he rushed the guy with what I call the 'twin warriors blow' the boy staggered, holding his nose

I guess some nerves and arteries must have broken as the guy had his hands clamped on his nose. His friends, seeing this made it a free fight for all.
They rushed Isaac and I with ferocious blows not minding where their punch landed.

I could see myself struggling with three of the guys, dodging some blows that could have caused one concussion, I was too engrossed in the duel that I couldn't see how Isaac was faring.

The groans made by the other guys is a testament to the fact that Isaac is faring well on his part and making his father proud.

The boys seeing they can't meet up and having their ass flogged, quickly initiated the use of weapons.
Outsiders on the road came rushing to separate the fight but In the heat of it, one of the lanky boys brought out something from his bag, I strained my eyes to see what it was and fear gripped me when my brain translated the object being held was a knife and heck! ... Isaac was stabbed.

Sighting the damage they have done, they took off in fear, fleeing but...

It is written that Men can only run but they can't hide.

How I wish they knew, how I wish they were told that Isaac's father is serving in lagos, a name dreaded in the whole of lagos state. How I wish they knew that the person they injured wasn't just any type of person, his dad is a SOLDIER and not just any kind of soldier but an MP; the red beret battalion.

Stay tuned to know what happened. See you next Saturday.

~Story of a quiet Yoruba Demon~
Chapter 4

Onlookers and those separating fight quickly got hold of Isaac, the blood gushing out of his side made the matter worse because it was streaming out profusely.

Thank God for one of the good samaritan who halted his car to carry Isaac to the nearest hospital when he saw how soaked he was in his school uniform.

My heart flacks? Who am I going to call? I left my phone at home due to the school's policy, the women in the man's car were covering the wound with a piece of clothing, trying to slow down the rate at which the blood is flowing out.

'Ehn, so mo daddy e ni? Mama e nko? Tani ale pe? Wo bo n se wo! Eyin Omo isin yin sha... O ti ja tan, oju yin ti da abi (hey! Do you know his dad? What about his mum? Who can we call? Look at how he is looking! Hmm, children of nowadays... After fighting, hope you are now satisfied)'

They bamboozled me with rhetoric questions, shifting their attention to me but still applying pressure to the wound, I had to soliloquize

What kind of women are these for God sake? One of them gave me her cell phone to call anyone after hearing that the injured boy was a family of mine, expediently, I placed a distress call to my mum.

'Ehn! Nibo? Nibo lewa bayii? Okay, ma bae n be' my mum sounded petrified after hearing that Isaac was stabbed.

................................

The next day, I was at Isaac's house, yesterday's tension has dampened enormously. Thank God the wound wasn't severe and any of his vital organs wasn't affected. So, the nurse; Nurse chidima, who attended to us yesterday stitched it in time

She gave us some prescriptions and told us Isaac was lucky to have been rushed to the hospital as at that time, if not, the injury might have escalated to something much worse.

'Tolu, tell me what happened?' my uncle (Isaac's father) loftily inquired in a very calm but hoarse voice.

'Ehm...it was, it wa..s'' I narrated amidst my stuttering tone. It is not like I'm scared of my uncle, but when he is like this, man gotta be loyal, humble and obsequious.

'Do you know the name of the boy that stabbed your brother' he queried, his eyes darting all over me, trying to discern the truth.

'No sir, but if I see him, I can recognise him' I responded respectfully, this time, gaining my half baked confidence.

'Isaac also said that, that is good since you both can identify the boys'

An airy and awkward feeling engulfed Isaac and I, just then, my uncle stood up and went into the room without asking further questions from us. Isaac whose face is lowered since the inception of the discussion tilted his head up, knowing his dad is out of sight, a smile escaping his lips but quickly kowtowed when he saw his mum approaching.

'Tolu the kickboxer, iwo pelu Isaac, e lo n dan agbara yin wo abi (Tolu the kickboxer, you and Isaac went to test the might of your power, right) ? Can you see yourself, he even pleaded to be allowed to attend school today. You both want to go and fight the round two abi? His mum vociferated sarcastically.

The day went by with my mum coming to drop my school wears but not after teasing Isaac and giving us series of warnings.

She later left for home, not long before 'dad 2' also came out and left us without saying anything but judging from his disposition, he seems to be angry.

We left home together the next day with the intent of attending classes in school, but not after Isaac's mum cautioned us against fighting in public, citing various cases and how it had led to loss of lives.

My uncle was not at home and before we could finish packing, we were already a bit late. Isaac's dad had already left for work or so we surmised, so we precipitously left home and boarded a bus which dropped us at the gate of the school, but not after the driver's sarcasm against us for going late to school and saying how he lost the opportunity of being a multi Millionaire because of illiteracy and lateness. We kept shut while he rammed us with his petty story and had to become taciturn when he saw we were not in the mood for chit - chat. On entering the school, all eyes were on us, some were amazed, some were filled with disgust but the demeanour of the teachers depict that of inquiry and begging for answers. Rumours they say, spreads like wildfire and we both seem to be at the center of it.

The students were already on the assembly ground, singing praises, their gazes fixated on us, what they were singing degenerated into a cacophony and the principal had to interpellate by intensifying his crooked voice before the pupils could get their acts together.

Isaac and I skeptically walked into the line and joined in the praises that was going on, glorifying God for his magnanimous protection and benevolence over our lives, how happy others were as they sang unto the Lord. Few minutes later, a chevrolet car painted with the military insignia quietly drove in without causing any brouhaha, students looked at it in awe and this got the the attention of the principal who had to climb down the podium to confront the unwarranted and distinguished invaders.

I could see from afar how the principal was walking towards the man who alighted gentlemanly from the car, a person no other than my honorable uncle.
They got into a quiet discourse which I couldn't decipher what was being said but the way the principal was nodding his head seems they reached into a consensus and I could see the condescending look the principal wore.

'Tolu and Isaac follow me' my uncle hollered in his usual baritone voice.

Isaac and I quickly ostracised ourselves from the assembly and hopped into the awaiting car that drove us out of the school, both of us looked back and watched till Apex High school slowly faded out of our keen view.

Outside the school was not only passers-by who had gathered to watch the rare spectacle, but also five idem cars like the one we were in, with military emblem on them. One would ask if it was a war?
But judging from the way the car is swerving, it is evidently clear to the deaf and audible to the blind that we are heading for 'Black Diamonds High School'. Yea! You are right, the school which the boys who stabbed Isaac attends.

After some minutes in the car, I tilted my head up to see what's ahead but to my dismay, the gate of 'Black Diamond High School' is already ajar and the cars ferociously drove in, not minding If the gates would break thereby causing a quandary as spectators gathered at the gate to see what would happen.

The students in Black Diamond High school were still on the assemble, sighting the military invasion, many wanted to make a dash for it but one of the soldiers flew out ordering everyone to be on their knees.
The students all lowered in utmost subjugation because there is an unofficial rule that says ' *Fear God,respect soldiers*' and no one, I mean no one, will be willing to bear the brunt of soldiers brutality.

The student and the teachers were all on their knees, the principal is nowhere to be found.

My uncle alighted from the car, ordered the soldiers not to flog anyone except those that attempts to run, in his benevolence, he asked all the teachers to stand up.

They murmured a truffled 'Thank you'. My uncle enquired the whereabouts of the principal, one of the teachers, stammering and unable to utter a complete sentence pointed at an office that is adjacent to the assembly ground.

My uncle walked over to the office but the door was shut, windows were closed, none would think there isn't a speck of living thing in it.

Disparagingly, he queried the teachers if he was in the right office and one of them answered in the affirmative but with a surprise look momentarily plastered on his face.

He asked one of the teachers to knock on the door, the teacher prodded forward and knocked vehemently for the person in the office to open the closed door.

This irked my uncle, he told the teacher to stop and threatened to break down the door and deal mercilessly with whomever he sees in the office.

I think the person at the other end was wise, the irons of the door clanged, giving way to reveal a petite man with baggy trousers, trails of wet substances staining his trousers and something that looks like a bible held closely to his chest.
It Is quite ostensible as sweat trickled down his neck, his chest heaving up and down like one who ran a 440m race while he was trying hard to conceal the conspicuous fear in him.

Isaac and I almost laughed when we saw this but the look on the soldiers made it imperative for us to keep mum and behave... So, the principal already urinated on his body like a Child.

'I... I am sorry' quivered the principal.

'Sir, I am here for the boys who stabbed my child, can you please come out with me to identify them' Dad asked which seem more like an order.

'Yes sir' he responded.

Isaac sighted two of the guys and your humble Tolu fished the others out.

Instantly, they were asked to turn in their bags, when the bag was searched, not a single book was found in them but mini weapons and some unscrupulous jazz items were seen in them.

Gboaaaa!!! A harsh slap that can make a staunch Christian convert to Muslim was administered to one of the guys which those items was found with by my daunting looking uncle.

What happened to them later, I don't know as they were taken to the barracks and we were dropped at the gate of our school.

Alighting from the car, the looks on everyone faces were dazzling because only few knew our dads are soldiers.

What happened that day made us the infamous hero Apex High School had ever produce.

The incident is still being talked about till today. I guess this is what drew Olamide; a girl in art class to me, she is not just one of the prettiest girls but one who removed the veil from my lustful eyes.
