Why are thieves so heartless?

Parents from infancy should teach their kids to "guard against all forms of covetousness" (Luke12:15)

The video is not conclusive. The story is based on she said, he said.

MrBrownJay1:
as if popular people dont do crimes.... lol i laugh in Japanese! the need to trend and be with the latest ger at any cost, will have some people do much worse than steal a phone.

the issue here is that A) the THIEF asked for a ransom to give the stolen phone back and B) this babe was in possession of the stolen phone.... so, however you want to look at this issue, we can conclude that she either IS the thief OR works with the thief (aka accomplice to theft/extorsion)

Who cares how she got the phone. Anybody demanding for ransom is a thief.
Was the item declared as stolen or misplaced? There is no legal law against it tho. Sm people take it as compensation or appreciation. However don't demand like a criminal. Lol

Doesn't make sense. She didn't steal that phone.

It doesn't matter how the item was declared. I believe collecting ransom is illegal in all context. This is not the same as asking for compensation after wilfully returning a lost item. I have been on the receiving end before, what these people do is negotiate their settlement before returning the lost item and if you don't agree they tell you to forget your phone.

Was there any recording of the call to prove she requested the N50k? Was there an SMS? Why are we too quick to judge? The same way The Senate President Saraki is being accused of sponsoring crime just because a car has his name on the name plate, the suspect attended his daughter's wedding ....these are not proofs! Lets stop this.
Is it just me or you didn't read the part they said the suspect demanded 50k just to return the phone. My dear, go back to the page and read thoroughly this time around.

If u misplaced a fone by ur carelessness dat is ur fault. If ure asked to negotiate for it back its exactly not a criminal offense bt u can only outsmart them by getting it back without paying them. U can call them other names bt not a thief cos dey didn't steal it.

That just my point. They can aswell say i saw it on the ground and i will drop it back there. Whos the loser? I know sm take it too far and ask for ridiculous stuffs dats why i said don't ask like a criminal. Dey shud take wateva the person can afford if dey must demand.

People have right to be careless, it is not a crime. People have been losing important things and they didn't die from the loss. I will advise you don't try it, when you see an item on the floor better leave it there because the result of playing smart might be a very long period of awaiting trial in jail.

And it is criminal to attempt to sell something that is not yours. There is no difference between a person demanding for 100 naira and another demanding for 1 million, they are both crooks and blackmailers.

Nothing you wrote has lead to the fact that she asked to be paid 50k before she returns someone lost but found item in your own excuse. nobody beat her, nobody abuse her. she was handed over to police to defend herself. Do the crime, Do the time. If na guy now, they would have beaten nonsense or maybe killed him by now.
No mind her. Only a thief supports a fellow thief.

#1 That phone got missing at her NYSC camp and for the fear of being nabbed with it, she decided to wait for NYSC camp to finish before she could flex it. If she never had bad intentions, she would have returned it right away.

#2 After NYSC camp finished and everyone travelled back to their respective states, she found the phone unusable wherever she was due to Icloud security. That phone is already as good as useless.

#3 She could have thought of selling that phone to a random individual but no one would cheaply fall for it without inspecting it. Once they found it was icloud locked, na double wahala coz they would spend more to unlock it at computer village or wherever tech hub and 2, it could also land them in trouble if the contents of that phone becomes suspicious. Those touts at computer village are very smart and they know how to bite toothlesly if they sence you no sharp and be JJC. One of them might even claim na SARs official just to get away with the phone and some cash. That girl couldn't sell it off. The fear of taking it to a phone expert also got her worried.

#4 As she couldn't do all of the above, her only option was to return it back to the owner but at a price so as not to be on the losing end after all the stress. She demanded a whooping 50k for the owner to get that phone back.

My question is why did it take her several weeks for her to reach or be reached? It was due to the time she wasted in camp so she could use what she stole and soliciting for buyers who weren't interested in a locked Iphone after camp.

could be the owner misplaced it and she picked it up, might not be a case of theft.
And she magnanimously decided to ask the owner to cough up #50k out of generosity?..she and who Thief na the same boat them dey..

There as being alot of people defending her on instagram, I think she's well known in Unilag as a model and they all said the same thing that she doesn't steal. The report made by the op could be false and people that knows what really happened defense her on instagram.
The poor girl was just a victim
Whether or not she stole the phone or found it is actually beside the point, that she demands #50k before she can release the phone makes her a criminal and therefore indefensible..
Unless there is any other thing she can add to the story..like someone said,if she had found the phone usable she would not have decided to released it to the owner with her mind set..

the video is irrelevant, she was found with a STOLEN phone, while trying to pick up the ransom for that same STOLEN phone. how much more proof do you need that this babe is involved in whatever is going on here?!

here are simple questions for you:
- how did she get the stolen phone?! at best this is a crime of handling stolen good, isnt it?!
- why would she ask for 50K for the owner to get his phone back? at best this is extortion, isnt it?

Whos selling anything dats not mine? Did i say such or advice such or insinuate such? I said if its negotiated its not a crime especially when reasonable. Nobody shud take offense in dat and if u take it to court u can win. U haven't committed a criminal offense yet. Im talking about smtn missplaced with no chance of u finding it.

Reallyhuh, the only reason such a person is returning the phone is because she can't make use of it due to it being locked..that is a CRIMINAL act..
Saying she didn't steal it with that kind of mindset already weakens her credibility..

How exactly does one steal a phone and then appears in person (without any backup) to go return the phone for a ransom to the owner?... The story makes no sense undecided

She can't use the phone she stole and then she doesnt fling the phone in the bin, but rather chooses to return the phone in person knowing fully well she stole it?... I don't think it takes much critical thinking to realise that this story is nonsense. Whoever brought this up needs to tell the full story.

Of what use or benefit is it to her if she decides to fling it in to the dustbin?..this is Nigeria, everybody be criminal..
Like any dubious minded Naija person she decided that the best thing to do is to try and EXTORT the owner before she can release it,unfortunately for her she it has backfired and she is singing a new song..

You are not reasoning as a man who went through hardened childhood should.

What she thought she could do was claim she saw the phone after it was misplaced. If I was also in her shoes I would have gone in person to receive the Ransome .
But no the person she wanted to collect that Ransome from wasn't that dumb. She stole that phone and after she couldnt use it, she decided to return it but at a 50k price. She thought she could use "missing phone" as cover up but that girl is a JJC criminal. For that phone to have stayed long with she's definitely a thief.
Why should you even demand money from me before you can return my property. Thats another crime on its own.

But then, if she stole the phone and wants to extort the owner because she cant use it, why then would she appear in person totally defenseless?... Can a true thief be so totally dumb?

Me thinks there is certainly the other side to this story which we're yet to be told. I saw this same report on instagram and there were at least 500 people on the comments who knew and were ready to vouch for the girl. I do not know the girl, but knowing a close friend who has been wrongly accused and publicly disgraced in the past, I think it would be totally wrong and unwise to quickly judge anyone based on stories we read in these blogs after hearing only one side of the story.

Reading between the lines, there is a high probability that she didn't actually stole the phone..a Thief is hardly expected to reach out to her victim..
If she found the phone and decided to extort the owner before she can release the phone, that hardly absolves her from being guilty..EXTORTION is a CRIME and can obviously land her in hot soup..
