OPPRESSION IS EVERYWHERE IN NIGERIA AND NOT ONLY IN THE SOUTH WEST.

MKO Abiola and the South West had their own share of Northern Oppression under the military government of General Sani Abacha.

Coming to the Niger delta region they have had much more bitter woe than what the South West had through the lost of Abiola and his presidential mandate.

The oil producing community of the Niger delta can not control their oil resources due to federal control imposed by the past military government in Nigeria which current civilian administration is refusing to change.

Ogoni lost Ken Saro Wiwa and other Ogoni leaders just the same way the south west lost MKO Abiola.

I THINK THE GREATEST HONOUR THAT CAN BE GIVEN TO CHIEF MKO ABIOLA IS NOT NECESSARY TO AWARD HIM AN HONOUR BE IT DEMOCRACY DAY OR WHATEVER BUT IT IS FOR THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO RESTRUCTURE OUR CLUMSY FEDERAL SYSTEM.

Nigeria should go back to true federalism, fiscial federalism where each state is free to control its own resources.

Apart from winning one of the freest presidential election ( June 12, 1993 election ) Chief MKO Abiola stood for TRUE FEDERALISM.

Read the beginning of my second paragraph well before raising unnecessary tribal sentiment.

Killing is bad and condemnable especially that of the innocent but when a soldier is given an order by a superior, he is not to be blamed for following the order.

Even the military has code of conduct which guides the institution. Any order that breaches that code of conducted is ignored, no mater who gives the order. Thats why coup plotters are executed alongside all the participants. The participants are not left free becuase their oga gave an order.

Speak of what you are sure bro. I'm yet to see one Igbo man that celebrates Hamza Mustapha.

Personally, I may abhor unjustified killings but I respect intelligent and disciplined men. In the military, order is one thing that must be followed whether morally justified of not and I guess Mustapha was disciplined enough to do that .

But many Igbos don't agree that Buhari was doing his job during the civil war.

Anyway, let us look at the highlighted statement again. Order can be disobeyed and wouldn't come across as indiscipline. Soldiers are not totally robotic. They are humans with consciences. In Egypt, soldiers refused to fire at protesters. That is what I call discipline. Refusing to take self-serving orders from above.

Yes they're the true heros of democracy. It is the more reason where each time Nigeria needs a sacrifice to move forward, there's always an afonja's man life available, and after which they'll be compensated for providing the sacrificial lamb with, GCON, after they're dead. Cowards

But 2 million ibo lives were sacrificed to herald the coming oil boom and fast economic growth.

Why must you Yoruba dullards drag Igbos into everything you say?

The same Mustapha that upon leaving the prison went straight to Dr. Fasheun's house and remained there for a while?

Alariiwo:
Hamza Al Mustapha that the buffoon released and is celebrated by Igbos till date.

Well thanks to MKO and other freedom fighters who laid down their lives so we can have democracy.
They are the true heroes we will never forget.

With June 12 just right around the corner, we remember the events that occurred around the annulment of the most free and fair elections ever held in Nigeria. Today we are looking back at the infamous hit man of General Sani Abacha, Sergeant Barnabas Jabila aka Sergeant Rogers.

Now said to be a pastor, Sergeant Rogers was involved in the assassination of the wife of Moshood Abiola, Kudirat Abiola on the 9th of June 1996. He was a member of the Strike Force and Presidential Body Guard believed to be a death squad under the command of Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, a trusted ally and the Chief Security Officer to late General Sani Abacha.

During the Human Rights Violation and Investigation Commission proceedings, he was called to bear defend himself against the petitions written against him. Accounts from the commission indicate he believed he was carrying out orders in the belief he was protecting the interest of the Country.

He was let go and was readmitted back into the Nigerian Army till 2009 when he was involved in an accident that affected his spinal cord.

During the dark days our dear country faced, Sgt Rogers held sway alongside several others serving the late General Abacha. Their reign was a reign of terror and it is sad that after the crimes committed, not a single person has been held to account for the roles they played.

Those who died for our democracy or were maimed deserve better than what has happened and while it could be argued that Sgt Rogers was merely carrying out orders, he should be held culpable as an accessory to the murder of innocent people.

As we approach June 12, we should remind ourselves every day the sacrifices made, for us to have democracy and ensure that never again will we be held captives within our own country.

You are not absolutely correct. In the military you are not suppose to carry out an unlawful order.

you should know that the Igbos are just but a single geographical region that were brave enough to fight against the rest of the 5 geographical region in Nigeria, then they had just 2 states (Anambra & Imo States) while Afonjas then has 4 states (Oyo, Ogun, Ondo & Lagos state). It goes to show their bravery. Unlike you and your fear fear brothers from the south west(afonjas)

Oppression begins n ends in the SE n generally the whole of eastern Nigeria.

Have u ever asked why it's only the Igbo region that doesn't have any embassy or consulate office in Nigeria

Igbos are clearly the ethnic group that travel beyond the shores of Nigeria more than any other in Nigeria n yet till 2012, We had no international airport.

Buhari cannot probe June 12, he was part and parcel of the election robbers. He was also part of Abacha's regime that imprisoned MKO. He was going to the prison to flog MKO sometimes.

He has just pressed Yoruba mumu button because of election that is few months away.

That's not true. No military Man can commit a crime and just claim it's an order. You are not expected to follow criminal orders. Both the doer and giver of the order are to be dismissed and jailed if this country gave a Bleep about the rule of law. The thing with Sgt Rogers is that he argued that disobeying almost meant you would be killed too under Sanni Abacha even though you did the right thing in the eyes of the law. No one can really argue against that.
In my opinion you have given the most balanced perspective to this issue. The ways of the military are pretty well known to me, my dad being a retired intelligence military officer and I can boldly say a lot of what I've read here is "English". If he dared refuse the order he wouldn't have walked out of that briefing room alive. If he did leave trust me he'd have had a compulsory "accident". People are quoting Nuremberg laws but you need to understand that those laws were being executed by the conquering Allied forces. Question is who tried the Americans and British for the war crimes they perpetrated? Oh we are to believe they stuck to the rules of engagement throughout WW2? Excuse me. In the military the winner takes it all. QED. Am I in any way holding brief for Sgt Rogers? Hell no. But in the Nigerian Army especially during Abacha days, anything short of absolute obedience was suicidal that is if they are kind enough to even leave any trace of your immediate family members.

I am not sure there is anything like moral justification in the military book.

I think they go by the sayings 'Orders are Orders and Obey the Last Order.
He's one of the many mods here that makes uniformed utterances showing how ignorant they are. In the Positivist school of Jurisprudence, law is law whether good or bad and must be adhered to or you suffer the consequences. The military as we know operates on that thought.

There is no military where illegal orders are to be blindly followed. Even the military has rules of engagement which are a sort of codified ethics.

In Nuremberg so many Nazis tried to walk that path, known as 'the Nuremberg defense', but they quickly found out their folly.

The Nuremberg Principle IV states:

"The fact that a person acted pursuant to order of his Government or of a superior does not relieve him from responsibility under international law, provided a moral choice was in fact possible to him."

This is what nailed Dostler.

Hmmm. I have a lot to learn about the two great war
