Goodmorning Family and happy New month.
I just put to birth and it was a difficult delivery becos my baby was too big ,during delivery the upper limp of my baby was stretched that he could not move one his hands, or feel it.Pls I want to know if any mother has experience this and how were they able help heal or use the hand.thanks
Note :the scans was seeing a small baby so there was no room for C S.
I've heard of two cases from friends who experienced this. One child had to undergo physical therapy for a while & the other had to have surgery to correct some nerve issues.

I had that experience before,my baby weighed 5 kg at birth and as a result of that his left hand dislocated i noticed it the second day after birth even the doctors were surprised that i detected on time,he was refered to lassuth Ikeja, but that couldn't corrected it was God and local orthopaedic that helped with regular massage with shearbutter and bandage every three days, before he was two months old it became normal as if nothing went wrong.

If you to handle a six month CP or Delayed developmental Milestone, do you make use of EMS? I employed Facilitation Technique and Constraint induced movement therapy without giving instructions to the baby.
You sound like you know your onions sir. May I asked where you are based?

The diagnosis is most likely Erb's palsy. Damage to the upper trunk of the brachial plexus. Chill.... Smile.... It's not a permanent condition.

Will a medic be advertising like a market woman?
What is difficult in googling what Wallerian degeneration is and coming online to post it!Api!!

If there is total separation of any nerve fiber surgery will be needed for reattachment.Otherwise to heal any other damage hyperbaric oxygen therapy will do well. After surgery hbot will also be helpful to reduce scar tissue.

Take your baby to a physiotherapist, that will start a reactivation of the weakened limb

Yes She should sue them!

Brachial Plexus (Erb's Palsy) almost ALL the time, borders around Negligence. Except, you didn't regularly go for Antenatal care...(Scans and all).
What if they were councelled adequately on options for delivery....
What if scan done was wrong?... What if patient na jehova witness?

[You are not sure of the information you are giving here. quote author=bigpicture001 post=68982314]...the end result if not checked fast is that the child would grow and that arm would grow for some time and permanently stop growth. so almost like a child with a limb disability....sorry to be the one that reveal this to u. but I think u should know....[/quote]

The injury your son had is called Brachial Plexus injury and is a network of nerves that sends signals from the spine to the shoulder, arm, and hand. Damage to the brachial plexus can cause symptoms such as

A limp or paralyzed arm
Lack of muscle control in the arm, hand, or wrist
Lack of feeling or sensation in the arm or hand
Brachial plexus injuries can happen because of shoulder trauma, tumors, or inflammation. Sometimes they happen during childbirth when a baby's shoulders become stuck during delivery and the nerves stretch or tear.

Some brachial plexus injuries may heal without treatment. Many children who are injured during birth improve or recover by 3 to 4 months of age. Treatment includes physical therapy, Occupational Therapy and, in some cases, surgery may be required.

I am an Occupational therapist please call me on this number which is 08034256318 so that I can discuss further with you. take care and God bless you

Re: Any Experience With A Baby With Upper Limb Injury During Birth? by CDCEO001:
Please visit the experts as you've been advised.
I have a little friend in my neighborhood who is about 10 or 11yrs with deformed arm.
I asked him what happened to him, he told me a nurse break his arm during his birth.
Maybe his parents did not do much about it.

Is probably not the time to make case or blame, but is it not the hospital responsibility for safe delivery of the child?

I feel your pain! I've read comments here. My child weighed 4.9kg, He had his right hand nerves torned and left hand broken.

I went to court got an affidavit, wanted to write to the medical body but issue was ironed out with the hospital.

My boy was taken to national hospital 3x per week and I also engaged a physiotherapists at home.

The truth is the severity of the injury will determine how early the hand will heal.

My advice: physiotherapy only helps keep the muscle busy and strong while the nerves regenerates.

Kindly contact Dr Kozin at Shriners hospital in Philadelphia. His is a neurologist (no be for mouth o) and you child will be treated for free. BE INFORMED- NO NEUROLOGIST IN NIGERIA CAN CARRYOUT THE SURGERY A CHILD WITH BPI NEEDS. ONLY FEW OF THEM IN US, UK, AUSTRALIA AND CANADA....... AND I KNOW OF A DOCTOR IN INDIA WHO WAS TRAINED BY DOCTOR KOZIN.

Dr Kozin asked I make a video of my child and upload, he assessed and told me my child needed an emergency surgery and told me my child had brain injury also. ( it was a terrible experience, basically there was nothing any doctor could do about the brain injury, while there were helping to make arrangements for a free flight to US, my child gave up the ghost after 6 months, he could barely move.) May it not be your potion. Amen

Proper assessment needed to be considered.

History you gave is not enough. Is the baby able to lift the hand unaided? Any pain ? Swelling? Atrophy ? any history of birth via breech or CS or forceful impacts while carrying the baby ?

However, A paedetrician will guide and help you but most importantly, A PHYSIOTHERAPIST will help the baby most than any health professionals.

I have opined
Thanks for your contribution. The baby can't lift the hand,No swelling, slight pain at the shoulder. Birth was normal head down but baby was big and head got stock at virginal.I ve started seeing a physiotherapist immediately I gave birth. Just want to be sure am doing the right thing.
