You shouldn't have jumped into the conversion without checking the dude I quoted too.

The guy claimed Ethiopia still export more agric goods than Nigeria even though I claimed we producing more. My humble answer was we have larger population which indirectly means more market to serve than the Ethiopians.

Simple answer is that we have larger consumer market that needs to be satisfied locally first. I hope this is clearer if the word population is confusing.

Next time Dont jump into argument blindly.

Dude do with have to break you head, before you think properly.

Population increase or larger consumer is never a reason not to export . That's a lazy man's excuse.

The advent of oil lead to all these mess, we abandon farming for black gold.

Coffee now it's totally gone, 1 out of 7 cocoa processing factory we've got, is only workimg in Ede Osun States.

Ajaokuta & refineries are has good as nothing. Dude when Nigerians population was not a crazy as what we have now. In the 60s, 70s & early 80s Nigerians exported more.

So simple, yet critical thinking.

CDS REASSURES NEMA OF ARMED FORCES CONTINUOUS SUPPORT

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin has reassured the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) that the Armed Forces would remain committed and supportive in achieving its institutional objectives. The CDS gave the assurance during the visit of Director General of the Agency Engr. Mustapha Yunusa Mustapha to the Defence Headquarters Abuja.

General Olonisakin who received the Director General and his entourage observed that the Armed Forces and NEMA were inseparable twins when issues of national emergency and disaster relief are discussed. He appreciated the efforts of the agency in promptly responding to various emergencies across the country and promised that military barracks were available for the Agency as safe haven during emergencies.

Charting the pathway to effective collaboration in disaster relief and other emergencies, the CDS noted that the Armed Forces had put in place in-house mechanisms such as the Defence Response Units which are located across the country. This measure, he said, is to ensure quick and timely responses to natural disasters and other emergencies. The CDS therefore appealed to the Director General to work closely with the Defence Response Units particularly in the area of experience sharing, technical capability, emergency simulation and other aspects of training.

In his remarks, Engr. Mustapha Yunusa said his team’s visit to the Defence Headquarters was in furtherance of the strategic partnership between his Agency and the Armed Forces, as stipulated in the NEMA Act. He revealed that through the dexterity and unflinching commitment of Armed Forces personnel deployed as composite force for emergency relief operations, NEMA had recorded tremendous achievements in the execution of its mandate. The DG therefore praised the steadfastness and commitment of the Armed Forces in response to various emergencies across the country in which he observed no military personnel had been found wanting in their personal and professional conducts.

Engr. Mustapha Yunusa said since 2012, the Agency had not recorded any major emergency situation but grappling with the humanitarian issues arising from the insurgency in North Eastern part of Nigeria. He affirmed that the Agency has 17 Disaster response units situated at strategic locations to facilitate emergency responses.

I didn't join in on that topic. Don't involve me there. One way or another all of you have points but I think you had better consult economic experts on that. I'm not one. I guess my forte is most glaring for the discerning to know. However my 1 kobo knowledge on economics based on my discipline is that it is an advantage for trade & economics and for times of exigencies say war. In rich economies where the population is dwindling women are even paid stipends to encourage child birth. Nigeria must do more to leverage on the advantages of a large population.

Sooo ? What about India, China, USA and Indonesia. They all export far more good than us.
Nairaland is the only place in earth were somebody can claim that population of a country impedes export of good.

I was only informing you of your mistake... About 90% of Nigeria's exports is crude oil, which is rather abysmal... Nigeria has the potential to be a huge manufacturing base for the African continent as well as the world... We need the right leadership to unlock this potential...
Look at Vietnam, they're rapidly industrializing...
What Nigeria needs is to build large free trade zones all over the country(similar to what China did) connecting to rail, deep seaports, and those zones to have electricity...
What I'm talking about is concentrating infrastructure in an area. Nigeria doesn't need to build infrastructure all over the country(It would take too long).
Nigeria just needs to concentrate certain infrastructure in certain area(constant power, water, rail,road...etc)
For example why can't a city like Lagos have 24/7 power and other amenities that would attract investors...
Investors know Nigeria's potential and they want to invest , they just need the right environment.

My only crime is that I find it difficult to explain at your level. You just qoute my word without thinking wide.

Population put pressure on those arable land for different economic reasons. Our population have grown 4x more than what we use to have then and the need for land in different areas of our life has increased.

Even under agriculture sector we still use land for several economic activities.
Farming
Grazing
Fishery
Poultry
Forestry
Horticulture
Ranching and dairy
Storage of goods
Transporting goods
value addition to the goods.
Research and development
Training
Etc

As population increases we start having conflict over this resource because the use are numerous. Take for example the way herdmen and farmers clash over land. I've not even mentioned other economic activities in other sectors that require the use of land as well like housing, industries, education, health, transportation, mining, etc.

If people now build houses on drainages, farmers and herdmen are clashing, communities fighting one another over land, and government also finding it difficult to allocate land where farmers need them, don't you think we've started entering a new phase in our life?

These activities are making land scarce resource for farming when compared to the rate our population is growing.

Secondly, its important to note that i never claimed population was the only problem why our agricultural sector is not growing. I gave population as one reason why we dont export despite being one of the largest producers of agricultural produce. If you have problem with comprehension please Dont put the blame on me.

Inadequate transportation facilities as well as poor electricity also limit agricultural output in their own way. Even farms using modern technology in Nigeria find it difficult to cope with these challenges. Some of them limit their output because of poor state of power for storage facilities and lack of access to good transportation system.

The population of today is crazy when compared to total land area.

Do I have to be going over the reason we should serve our huge local consumer market instead of exporting raw farm output? Why should I export when my local demand for the goods are expanding exponentially? Several companies starting up with huge demand for raw materials and population which need to be feed is equally growing. Land to be used for farming is contending with other economic activities not to talk of other challenges faced by agricultural sector.

This is how low I can go to explain my original claim. If you still don't get it then am sorry for you.

You are good in twisting arguments and disclaim ingredients what you typed that is evident. Probably you go back and check your post.

Dude all your essay you composed are not yet genuine factors not to have enough to export, come up with other flimsy excuse. The black gold as made us not to think ahead and that's why we find our selves in these present situation.

Serious countries that make there major earnings/GDP from agriculture plans ahead. The black gold is going to come to and end one day or its value in global market should fall to minimal.

Some European countries with France pioneering the race has said by 2025 -2030 they are going to ban cars using all sort of fuel(PMS & diesel). Sooner or later other countries will join, and when your biggest customer who buys your oil joins....what will happen

Then you know all these you explanation will be useless, people would go back into farming irrespective of any challenges they face.
