And what about the Eritrean–Ethiopian War, one of the conflicts in the Horn of Africa, took place between Ethiopia and Eritrea from May 1998 to June 2000.

Eritrea broke international law and triggered the war by invading Ethiopia. At the end of the war, Ethiopia held all of the disputed territory and had advanced into Eritrea.

It's a bid win for Ethiopia and it still recent.
You are right that war should also be included and also including the 1960s war between Somalia-Ethiopia. By the way, my father was commanded during Ethio-Eritrea war and I lost some relatives who went there to fight.

The advent of a modern Ethiopia in 1855 is subjective. The last two world wars happened in the 20th century. Point is the modern state Ethiopia of recent years has struggled with internal rebellions it hasn't contained or in which it endures a detente and no external comprehensive military victory without skirmishes that challenged the status quo until the recent peace deal with Eritrea at Ethiopia's initiative. This is so because Ethiopia knows it lacks the military or economic capacity to win the war being one of the poorest countries in the world that depends on foreign aid.

As you know powers rise and fall. It has been that way for thousands of years. The genesis of the argument is Ethiopia better in comparison to Nigeria in all sectors. Nigeria has displaced Ethiopia as a geo-political power in Africa. Ethiopia deserves it's due for reasons of it's rich history but today Ethiopia is a second rate power compared to Nigeria.
You can also look Somalia-Ethiopia and Ethio-Eritrea wars. Those wars were either won by Ethiopia or were a stalemate.

Nigeria might be better in economic than Ethiopia but you can’t say it has displaced Ethiopia as geo-political power in Africa. Ethiopia still contribute the largest and efficient peacekeeping in Africa and home of African Union and other continental and international organizations.

The Ethiopian soldiers who went to Korea war to help South Korea were the most efficient and impressive soldiers during the war. Even their enemy Chinese admired them. Nowadays Ethiopia might be at mess but improvements are also been seen and hope it continues.

Yea I know all that, I know all that and if we go into the factors at play in those wars and outcomes we will be at crossroads. The point is none of those wars it won or didn't win militarily changed the status-quo-ante in it's backyard in recent years. That's the point here. Telling me what happened 100 or anything over 50 years ago has no relevance to the current day geo-political realities. Nigerian elements also fought in WW11 with sterling records in Burma. And Nigeria set the bar when it comes to peacekeeping in Africa. Today Ethiopia's political-social-economic-defense system is a reflection of Meles Zenawi's legacy. That's the modern Ethiopia.

The established facts today are that Ethiopia is not one of the regional powers in Africa which are Nigeria, Egypt and South Africa. Largest contributor to UN funded operations changes hands from time to time depending on the political interests of the actors in the areas of conflict. Even tiny Rwanda has commanded a major UN mission. Nations are not categorized regional powers or global powers based on troop contribution to UN missions. If so Bangladesh will be considered one. Ethiopia is about the most poorest state in the world along with Eritrea and does not meet the criteria needed for qualification as a regional power. A regional power is a state that by reason of it's unrivaled economic and military might determines the political, social, economic, security and even cultural balance of it's sphere of influence unchallenged.

Since it's appearance in 1960 Nigeria has been called the giant of Africa. It has since displaced Ethiopia which was only then East-Africa's regional power. Today Kenya has taken on that role and not Ethiopia. And to make it clear to you even State Governors in Nigeria control budgets not foreign funded that is larger than those of many African countries. The facts are out there. Let's move on.

Eritrean War of Independence

Judging by the facts and sources of equipment and (army &airforce) size; they are doing better than us, also in private defence sector.

And to my shock the Ethiopians have the highest number of UN military personnel contributors, sources released by UN.

All this bad news coming out of the NE theatre these past few days is really disheartening, I thought the war had advanced well behind this stage. undecided

I thought we were in a mop up stage and these terrorists had been degraded to the point they could only hit soft targets and sparsely guarded outposts.

It’s starting to look more like a never ending war of attrition, similar to conflicts in India, Pakistan and turkey.

RIP to our galaxy soldiers paying the supreme price for this country

Source: Ahmad Salkida.

The military should know that having men and guns do not win battles. For ISWAP to have attacked a military facility means ISR capability is extremely weak. Base protection is bad. Military facility housing over 500 soldiers should have an overall situation awareness of nothing less than 10km around it.

Most of the over 700 soldiers on duty are only armed with their riffle while the attacking force comes in with military hardware in huge number.

That's not the problem. The danger here is that once they get close to you, these hardware will hit targets up to 10km thereby leaving soldiers to run for safety as they are already exposed to danger flying in.

You have no situational awareness, your hardware are already hit, explosives are landing at different area. A suppressive fire is useless. The only hope is the Air Force or another unit that can come around to divert enemy fire which is not advisable due to ambush.

This attack can be linked to a similar attack on KDF with several lives lost. They were able to hold ground due to them sighting Al shabab with UAV.

A million unaware soldiers cannot stop an attacking enemy with huge fire power once the ambush commence. Just look at how the Russian PMC tried attacking the American forces. The American made use of air superiority and situation awareness. If you don't know what's going on around you, you'll have bunch of dead good guys wrapped with a nation's flag.

The Nigerian military needs to introduce some technology that will enhance the military operation. You all should forget about the military hardware. Cyber security, interception of communication signal, motion detectors etc will do much.

A quick look at an Egyptian military convoy will show you at least a vehicle mounted with sensor and communication gadjets. Even if with moles, the military will go through ambush everytime with this.

It's not about men with guns. Not about having t72 Rolling around. Imagine a convoy of T72 Not being able to detect enemies around the vicinity? An ambush force armed with howitzer?

Tactics needs to change.

The casualty figures might not be as high as 100 but expect something close to it.

Since I have been following these dude reporting on BHT activity on twitter; his stories as always come out true.

Have you forgotten the downed NAF Mil 17 helo, in as much I hate to dispute the story but it later came out to be true, despite military authorities claiming otherwise and other sad events like these.

The helicopter was never downed but had technical failure. Unfortunately, the aircraft fell close to the
terrorist side therefore the A-jet which went in with the helicopter could not perform CAS due to danger close. The aircraft kept sweeping the area and the jet was later called in to destroy military hardware in that area to avoid it being taken over by the insurgent.

PRESS RELEASE

UPDATE ON THE ATTACK ON SOLDIERS BY BOKO HARAM IN BAMA

1.The attention of the Nigerian Army has been drawn to news making the round alleging attack on soldiers and capturing of military vehicles by Boko Haram in Bama Local Government Area of Borno State.

2. The Nigerian Army wishes to state categorically that the report is not only untrue but misleading as the said report is blown out of proportion by the media.

3. Contrary to the report, the Nigerian Army wishes to put the record straight on the issue and assure members of the public particularly residents of the North East to disregard the report as their safety is guaranteed.

4.The Nigeria Army wishes to state that there was an attempted attack on troops at Kwakwa and Chingori communities in Bama area of Borno State by suspected Boko Haram Terrorists as a result of difficult terrain where our vehicles bugged down. The terrorists also attempted to cart away troops operational vehicles, but were successfully repelled by our gallant troops with the support of the Nigerian Air Force.

5. About 22 members of Boko Haram terrorists were neutralised while several others escaped with gunshot wounds. Efforts are being intensified by the troops to get the fleeing members of the Boko Haram terrorists.

6. Unfortunately, one officer and a soldier sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical attention at the military medical facility.

7. While the Nigerian Army would not join issues with the media, certain facts must be reported with caution particularly now that numerous successes have been recorded by the troops in the fight against insurgency.

8. Members of the public are hereby advised to disregard the report and go about their legitimate businesses as the Nigerian Army is on top of the situation.

9. It is my well-thought-out opinion that in future, media practitioners should endeavour to verify facts from the appropriate military authority before rushing to the press.

10. Thank you.
