PRESS RELEASE

RE: BOKO HARAM OVERRUN MILITARY BASE IN YOBE, SOLDIERS MISSING

1. The attention of the Nigerian Army has been drawn to a publication on the front page of Daily Trust Newspaper of Monday, 16 July 2018 titled “BOKO HARAM OVERRUN MILITARY BASE IN YOBE, SOLDIERS MISSING”. In the said story, the report stated inter alia, that “over six hundred soldiers are still missing after suspected Boko Haram militants overran a military base in Yobe state”.

2. The Nigerian Army wishes to state categorically that the report is not only untrue but capable of misleading members of the general public.

3. The write-up further alleged that about 100 of the troops that disappeared from the base in Jilli after the clash have reported in Geidam town but very few of them had their weapons with them.

4. Contrary to the report, the Army wishes to state that, although the base was attacked by suspected Boko Haram insurgents, troops reorganised and successfully repelled the attack and normalcy has since returned to the area. Also, all the troops in the base were accounted for contrary to the report.

5. Consequently, the Nigerian Army wishes to state that the fight against Boko Haram Terrorists in the North Eastern parts of the country is yielding positive result that lead to the return of some Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) back to their ancestral homes.

6. The Nigerian Army therefore advised members of the public particularly residents of the affected areas to go about their legitimate businesses and disregard the said report as the Nigerian Army will continue to protect lives and property of citizens at all times.

7. The Nigerian Army also call on the media to always restrain caution, verify facts as well as balance their reports before rushing to the press to avoid misinforming the public on sensitive issues.

8. Thank you.

UK unveils 6th generation fighter jet called Tempest

Tempest is expected to complement the F-35 and eventually replace Typhoon.

It is understood that £2 billion in initial funding will be set out to oversee the design and build of the aircraft, which will be operational in 2035. The project is a joint venture between BAE Systems, Rolls Royce, MBDA UK Ltd and Leonardo.

As part of the study, a full size model of the aircraft was constructed and was subjected to a rigorous test regime to determine its radar cross section.

According to reports, the Replica project is known to have been worked on from 1994 to 1999. It was also widely believed that Replica could have been intended to inform work on new generation aircraft and that looks to have been somewhat accurate, even based on how similar the design looks to Tempest.

Team Tempest brings together the UK’s world leading industry and sovereign capabilities across future combat air’s four key technology areas: advanced combat air systems and integration (BAE Systems); advanced power and propulsion systems (Rolls-Royce); advanced sensors, electronics and avionics (Leonardo) and advanced weapon systems (MBDA).

Early decisions around how to acquire the capability will be confirmed by the end of 2020, before final investment decisions are made by 2025. The aim is then for a next generation platform to have operational capability by 2035. The Government say that F-35 Lightning II and the Typhoon are two complementary multi-role combat aircraft that will make up the RAF’s combat air fleet, “placing the UK at the forefront of combat air technology” – with the Typhoon expected to remain in UK service until at least 2040

Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Hillier, said:

“The Combat Air Strategy will bring together the best of our people, industry and international partners to support the RAF lift-off into the next century of air power. Team Tempest demonstrates our commitment in ensuring that we continue to build our capabilities, draw upon our experience and history to bring forward a compelling vision for the next generation fighter jet. In last 100 years, the RAF has led the way and today’s announcement is a clear demonstration of what lies ahead.”

there are better options instead of destroying a multimillion piece of hardware that calling an A-jet ..

The A-jet was in there already. The troops on ground were not equipped with such capability. It's a unit that has been operating deep in that location for a very long time. They have been under BHT attack several times so they're probably low on some charges.

Who knows. Every story has 2 sides, Boko Haram/media releases claim, it’s someone’s job in the army to release counter claim, at the end of the day you can barely receive the full narrative from either party.

The military facility was indeed attacked by Boko Haram.
The GOC was immediately moved out of the facility during the attack.
Soldiers did their best protecting the base but they lost some certain position.
AFSF unit was detailed to join the team to repel the attack.

The barrack was never in full control of BHT.

We only need to work more on having situation awareness around military facilities.

There are two guys Salkida and Edward Don Kleirikuzio) who get BHT propaganda and just release it on Twitter without any verification or with just partial verification (i suspect) from some unknown NA officers who are far from the scene. They are just going to let Buratai enjoy another image enhancing visit.

Anyway, Army aviation is now a necessity. We need at least a squadron of choppers in one year.

NA is busy placing orders for light utility helicopters, instead of them to pick up potent and nimble attack helos from China or turkey.

LUHs are good. No airforce pilot or mechanic who runs rotary wings everyday would not prefer militarized LUH for COIN. They are dead cheap, ~$9m. The versions the NAF are buying are modern versions of aircraft that have been used in the Nigerian oil industry for years.

NAF is buying accurate APKWS kits that can be fitted on these aircraft as part of the Super Tucano deal. NAF will never buy a Chinese AH. The T-129 is a possibility and Nigeria almost bought them it in 2013. What we need now are LUH in numbers and good, accurate ordnance delivery systems then we can resume MI 35M or 28N procurement in 2019

NIGERIA APPROVES BUDGET WITH NEW PAYMENTS FOR JF-17 FIGHTERS

On 20 June 2018, Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari signed the country’s next fiscal budget – i.e. the 2018 Appropriation Bill of the Federal Government of Nigeria – into law.[1] Not only did the final budget retain the $35 million US installment allocated for three JF-17 Thunder multi-role fighters – to be procured from Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) – but the revised budget added another $47 million US for the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) JF-17 program.[2] With Nigeria previously allocating $14 million US for JF-17s in its 2016 budget, it appears that the country will complete its payments to PAC by the end of 2018.

Not only does the allocation firmly settle that the NAF is to be a JF-17 user, but with its payments done, it should be on track to begin inducting these aircraft. Currently, the workhorse of Nigeria’s combat aircraft fleet is the F-7NI (i.e. a version of the F-7MG), a platform the JF-17 was designed to affordably supplant.
