No man is free who sees his neighbour as his enemy. For a man that is surrounded by his enemy will always keeping watch over his life.

In the Southern part of Nigeria live the Igbo and Yoruba Ethnic groups. Although they do not share a distinct boundary – and their cultures enjoy various discrepancies – one can hardly trace the end of Igbo ethnic group, and the beginning of Yoruba ethnic group from the map of Nigeria. Take the physical features of both ethnic group for example, Onitsha is a riverine city in Igbo land and on the west, across the River Niger, is Asaba, another Igbo community. As one moves westward Asaba to Agbor, the dialect and cultural practices vary. The culture varies also. The more west you travel, the more the culture becomes more Yoruba than Igbo. The variation continues from Benin City until one gets to the ancient city of Ile Ife: Yoruba land.

This simply means that from Onitsha to Ile Ife, the Igbo language becomes rarer and rarer, and the Yoruba language becomes more and more frequent until it replaces Igbo completely. The communities in-between – which I also believe are from the same ancestor – share a blend of the two.

Apart from this interlocking of culture, the geographic characteristics of the two tribes are similar. There are also cultural similarities and the use of similar dialect. Because of all these, I am inclined to believe that the Igbo and Yoruba Ethnic group are from a traceable common ancestor....

Yoruba Are 99.9% Genetically Identical To Igbos – Study

Genetic research finds that there is little genetic difference between most African ethnic groups and less so when they are closer together. A study published in the Bio Medical Center found there was little evidence for significant population substructure in the four major West African ethnic groups, the Yoruba and Igbo of Nigeria and Akan and Gaa-Adangbe of Ghana.

The findings, according to the team, “although not entirely surprising given the geographical proximity of these groups, provide important insights into the genetic relationships between the ethnic groups studied and confirm previous results that showed close genetic relationship between most studied West African groups.”

The study was conducted by Adebowale Adeyemo, Guanjie Chen2, Yuanxiu Chen and Charles Rotimi of the University of Ibadan, National Human Genome Center and Howard university. Analysis of Molecular Variance, AMOVA was used.

Adebowale et al made the shocking discovery that whereas there was 99.9% within-population variance, the between-population variance was less than 0.1%. This means that Yorubas, Igbos, Gaa and Akan are 99.9% similar as populations, while within each of the groups there are differences/variations between individuals as high as 99%, i.e. One Igbo may be 99% variant to another Igbo, or one Yoruba to another Yoruba.

We are so blinded by our individual ethnic bias for economic gains we lose anyway.

People are ready to trace their ancestors to the new world where humans spread to in more recent times than accept their neighbors as their own brothers and sisters.

Fools claim they have nothing in common and it was the British that joined them at the hips.

Sometimes I just get tired of arguing with ignoramus.

It is a known fact that Yoruba Edo and Igbo split about 3000 years ago

They split when Oduduwa arrived about 1000 AD he met Igbos at Ife , the Bini also came from Ife infact the ancient Ife Kingdom reached river Niger where Asaba is today. and went as far westward as Atakampe in Togo where the people of the region are still called Ife today. Yoruba oral History recorded that the Igbos became scattered all over Yorubaland after Oduduwa overpowered their King at Ife but I believe there is genetic and linguistic evidence to show they were scattered all over southern Nigeria. 77 Igbo Kings had ruled Ife before Oduduwas arrival starting from about 300 BC. The earliest Igbo founders of Ife were called Ooyelaagbo which means the Survivors of the great flood, which Yorubas believe was the same as Noah’s flood of the Bible.

Just because the Europeans lumped us into one useless country does not mean we share anything in common.

Your comparison with Yoruba aren't as correct with interpretation? Do you not know, some words are borrowed? grin Funny enough your comparison is basically modern day Yoruba, patterned after Ajayi Crowther's ideology and not the dialects spoken in different Yoruba enclave, even till eternity.

These dialects are not easily understood non speakers of yorubas.Olukumi(Yoruba people of Igbodu clan) are in the deep part of Delta state, surrounded by Ibos, why doesn't the language assimilate and be unified with their Ibo neighbours? Tell yourself the truth.

Anyway, believe whatever you want to believe but Yoruba aren't genetically related with Ibo,after careful DNA studies nor did Yorubas had same ancestry. This is practically a false.

Trust me on this,I have nothing to proof to you but if you are damn sure of words similarities between Ibos and Yoruba, then go and write out the Ibo meaning of over 150 words that is written in Yoruba, which are spoken in yoruba dialects and its English meaning,to see if you are inline or not,in a thread, with the topic; ‘Arab origin of Yoruba'. Perhaps, you will realise the deviation of your opinion from reality and historical facts.

How people can't see the similarities between Akan, Ewe, Fon, Yoruba, Edo and Igbo is not the problem(we can blame ignorance) it's how some think Yoruba or Igbo are Hebrews that is the problem

My dear brother, I find it disheartening reading many fairytale on NL and it is so bad. Do you even know the correct word in Yoruba for human, mankind, created human/mankind is ‘édà or human being is ‘édà ènìyán . Take for instance élé'dà (creator) and édà ( created being/human) . But today you will marvel at the way revisionism of some sort has blinded many, just because some Yorubas feels, Yoruba must be related to neighbouring ethnic groups. In this same West Africa, there are tribes/clans/ ethnic groups such as, Ibos that calls father as ‘nna', Ga calls father as ‘do da' , Setwana calls father as - Ra . How are these related to Yoruba Ba,Abba,Uba as father? Some also claim fon as same ancestry with Yorubas. Fon ,who claimed female was the Supreme being that is called nana buluku, who gave birth to mawin and lisa and created the universe. How does this relate to. Yoruba Èlèdùmàrè? Some over lettered assumed father is ‘Baba', which is blatant false because ‘Baba' is grandfather in proper and standard Yoruba. This is the reason, you and I see Yoruba bears Bàbàtundè,Bàbàrìnsà, Babawalè etc. Hopefully, people with the deep knowledge of Yoruba indigenous lexicon will correct this anomaly.

You are very right, of all the tribes listed above, Yorubas are only related to the Ga tribe in Ghana, they have records of their migration from Old Oyo , same applies to the Ewe people of Benin & Togo. We were all known as Erhvehs prior to emergence of the colonizers.
