@Bidexxi: I hear the J-10 doesn't have approval for foreign sales. Its strictly for the PLA Airforce. As for the Su-30, i would advocate we go for single engine Jets (e.g. Jf 17) in great numbers probably 2 squadrons than getting Su-30 which is a twin engine jet with crazily high maintenance costs. This is the thinking i believe made the NAF go for Jf17. You know how poor our defence budgets are in comparison to our GDP, population and land mass. Let us not buy planes that will only be kept in the hangar. In fact the JF17 Block 3 is to have AESA radar. If we get a few block 2's and then move on to get more of Block 3's when it is ready, then we are good. |

brosiye99:Single engine aircraft in this 21st century? To me it is penny wise pounds foolish. What if there is any problem with the single engine, that means the pilot will just ditch the multimillion dollar machine. Twin engine is safer, in aviation you don't trade Safety for anything cos it is disastrous. Just imagine a military aircraft with high explosive having an engine failure the disaster is better imagined. |

allexpensive: Odunayaw:The safety, welfare and security of Nigerian troops are the responsibility of the Nigerian Government and the citizens. France, U.S. And Canada have no say in it. Lets understand that foreign interference is a reality, no doubt about that. It won't stop today or tomorrow. But the bottom line is that whatever outcome depends entirely on Nigerian Government actions. |

F-16 is a single engine (one of the best fighters of the 4th Gen era) and even the 5th gen F-35 is a single engine. What we should be looking at is the maintenance costs. Twin engine aircraft are actually much better if you can afford them but their maintenance costs are very high. Can Nigeria have lets say 12 Su-30/35 that would can be regularly in the air. I doubt much. What matters in any warplane is not the number engines but the sensors, electronics suites, weapons and i may add stealth. Still we must also note that twin engine jets such as the f-22 Raptor is always having to be maintained even after a few hours of flight time costing the USAF millions of dollars annually for just one F-22. That is why the Raptor hardly flies except in special cases. That is also why the F-16 gets more work load and sorties than some of the heavier twin engine 4th Gen planes in the American arsenal such as the F-15 and F/A18 Hornet Its about practicability and useability rather than prestige in my opinion. |

brosiye99:If the primary requirement is to have an aircraft with low procurement & operational cost – single engine is preferable. If the primary requirement is to have a greater payload, high-performance (in a bigger flight-envelope) – twin-engine aircraft is preferable. The level of technology available also plays a role. If a country’s engine doesn’t have sufficient reliability or thrust, then twin-engine airframe will be the preferable choice by default. |

Odunayaw:If the engine of the single engined fighter have FADEC then no worries 99% of the time. Full authority digital engine control (FADEC) is a system consisting of a digital computer and its related accessories that control all aspects of aircraft engine performance. HAL and United Aircraft Corporation of Russia parted ways on the development of MTA (IL-276) due this issue with IAF wanting a FADEC installed engine while the Russian wanting to go with a legacy engine. For info Presently jf17 uses the RD-93 engine ( based on RD33) which does not have FADEC. While the FADEC equipped newer versions of RD33 ie RD33MK is used in Mig-29UPG/mig-29K/mig-35 and all r twin engined coincidentally. Almost all present single engined aircrafts like f16 , Gripen , fa-50 , f-2 , LCA , j-10 have FADEC installed engine Imo Naf should insist on FADEC installed RD33MK for jf17 and save a lot of headache later on |
| Re: Battle Field Discussion (picture/video) Of African Military . by SternProphet: 5:23pm On Aug 02, 2018 |
ugo4u:Engine failure these days are actually predictable. Every component has fatigue life and a MTBF known exactly. You see NAF doing PDMs when the aircraft can still fly, this is to ensure that components nearing their life are replaced. So single engine aircraft are getting more reliable once you do your PDM. There are also "common cause failures" that happen in a double engine redundancy situation . Fuel system issues will affect both engines at the same time and they both fail and the plane goes down so ..two engines are not helping. To make matters interesting some 2 engine aircraft have single intake so in a bird strike situation you can't sat there is a second engine to help you. My problem with a light fighter li,e JF17 is range. We need to be able to get inside Chad, Cameroon and Niger. If we buy a squadron we need to start practising aerial refuelling |
| Re: Battle Field Discussion (picture/video) Of African Military . by iblawi(m): 5:55pm On Aug 02, 2018 |
SternProphet:Weytin you wan do for there? The range of jf17 is good enough for it role. |
| Re: Battle Field Discussion (picture/video) Of African Military . by Nobody: 5:59pm On Aug 02, 2018 |
SternProphet:Yes but this is applicable to only modern engines equipped with FADEC. FADEC allows for Automatic engine protection against out of tolerance operations. More safety margin as the multiple channel FADEC computer provides redundancy in case of failure of a single channel. Care free engine handling, with guaranteed thrust settings. Better systems integration with engine and aircraft systems. Reduction in the number of parameters to be monitored by pilot etc etc And importantly provides engine health monitoring and diagnostics ability. Due to the high number of parameters monitored, the FADEC allows for fault tolerant engine. As for ur concerns with MTBF of components, it is a extrinsic factor more to do with off flight, off line diagnostics and maintenance only , unlike FADEC equipped engine which deals with both on line / on flight and off line / off flight diagnostics and maintenance. every engine has a OEM rated MTBO ( mean time between overhauls ) also known as TBO/TBOH ( time between overhauls ). In short it is the OEM recommended number of running hours or calendar time before an aircraft engine needs to be overhauled to cater for component MTBF etc etc. If a engine suffers component failure than it is most of the time due to the faults of the repair and maintenance crew to adhere to OEM mandated SOPs ie MTBO etc etc or use of faulty/substandard components sourced from non OEM sources. |

100% agree with this, FADEC is real time, online/offline reliability system. |
| Re: Battle Field Discussion (picture/video) Of African Military . by SternProphet: 6:37pm On Aug 02, 2018 |
nemesis8u:I have been campaigning on all platforms against Russian jets usage by third world countries. The support infrastructure is not just there and to make matters worse it is not just engine reliability but overall operational reliability... so avionics, flight controls, landing gear et,c also not reliable or heavily dependent on replacement parts from inefficient Russian supply chain since they don't have global networks of OEMs like for F16s. Nigeria is just a smart country. We look for capability in every sense |

SternProphet:Aerial refueling? na Canada we wan strike? lol. On a serious note even our Chinese F7s can strike any part of Chad, Cameroon,Niger etc from any base in Adamawa or Borno. Note the F7 NI has a range of about 800km. As for mid air refueling I laff again, na for enemy territory you wan refuel. Ask any combat pilot, once he is in an enemy air space, the only thing on his mind is to hit his target and return home while watching out for enemy interceptor/missile simultaneously. An aircraft carrier would have made more sense, but which water we wan station the carrier and most importantly which money we wan take buy am, when to buy aircraft na wahala. |
| Re: Battle Field Discussion (picture/video) Of African Military . by SternProphet: 10:47pm On Aug 02, 2018 |
ugo4u:I partially agree. The whole premise of mid air refuelling though is that it is done over the sea or lightly contested airspace. There is no air force contesting where we are going to need it anywhere in Africa except the French Airforce in some places. Remember we once had an air force Alpha Jet drop out of sky on Malian ops. |
