These brands were once the king of the smartphone/ electronics industry and were once best sellers. They commanded high market share at one time or the other long before Samsung and Apple took over the baton. Unlike the automobile industry, the same old players dominating the scene in the 80s and 90s are the ones dominating the market till today and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. I mean take a look at the likes of Mercedes Benz, Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Chevrolet, Ford Toyota, Honda etc are still the king of the industry and I don’t see new companies like Tesla, Tango, BYD etc taking over from them. So the big question is why is it so different in the smartphone world ? New phone companies like Xiaomi is already threatening to displace Apple and Samsung, even Oppo of yesterday now has one of the largest smartphone market, funny. I don’t understand how innovative brands that once rake in profit in billions of dollars now record losses in billions of dollars and they can’t seem to make a comeback to profitability. Anyways we’ll be looking at some brands that used to be household names in the past and what happened to them.

1. BlackBerry (adapt or die)

Who on this planet would have believed for one second that the “ALMIGHTY BLACKBERRY” would just fizzle out into oblivion ? What went wrong with Blackberry ? Why did it collapse ? Why……? The questions on the minds of many are endless and confusing. BlackBerry is not just struggling, the company is on the brink of extinction ! That’s how bad it is. The problem with BlackBerry was that the company was too rigid and slow to adapt to the rapid changes in the smartphone industry. They locked down their OS and made it impossible for users to use popular apps like Whatsapp rather forcing BBM down their throats. It made one last attempt for survival when it dumped the BlackBerry OS and launched it’s first Android smartphone which came as a surprise but it was too late and the price was so high, it was a turn off for loyal fans who would have loved to buy it. The lesson you should learn from BB is simple. ADAPT OR DIE

2. HTC

HTC is the ancestor of all smartphones in the world, you can call it the great grandfather of all Android devices. First maker of Android phone in the world ((HTC dream in 2008), first company to launch a dual camera smartphone, first to launch a Windows smartphone, first to launch a full metal body smartphone, first to do this or that. The list is endless, the fact remains that most of the major innovations in the smartphone industry started with HTC so what happened to this company with a long lists of records and innovations. The answer is sweet and simple, COMPETITION. Instaed of HTC to focus on the midrange market, it chose to battle with Samsung and Apple for a slice of the pie in the high-end division and this brought their downfall. Anyway we hear that HTC is cooking a new surprise for it’s fans, I seriously hope this surprise will be a turning point for the company because they need it so badly.

3. SONY

SONY’s failure in the tech industry remains one of the unsolved mysteries in the world. How this mighty Japanese tech empire became a shadow of it’s self amazes me. They company have done almost everything it can to impress customers to no avail even in Japan, SONY’s own home country, most people are using iPhone, pathetic.

SONY shocked Hollywood by making bold acquisitions like Columbia Pictures which seems to be doing fine but many don’t know this but SONY has sold off it’s PC division, the VIAO to another Japanese company. The Xperia premium flagship phones are not doing fine in the market either because Chinese manufacturers are producing great phones which are cheaper. Thankfully, the SONY Playstion 4 (PS4) is still bringing in money for the company but if things continue the way it is now, it may stop producing smartphones altogether.

4. Gionee

Gionee is a top Chinese smartphone maker and was the first Chinese smartphone to enter India. Gionee once ruled the Indian smartphone market but now it seems to be struggling serious in the territory it once dominated. Even in Africa, Gionee cannot seem to ward off strong competitions from the likes of TECNO, INFINIX, ITEL which has fought aggressively for a large portion of the smartphone market. Back home in China, Gionee is a relatively small company compared to Giants like Xiaomi, Huawei, Vivo, Oppo etc. This stunted growth has negatively impacted gionee to the point it’s finding it difficult to release new products like it’s fellow Chinese smartphone makers.

5. Motorola

Motorola used to be a household name back then, I remember the Motorola Razr used to be the slimmest phone back then and very trendy, ladies would kill to have a Motorola Razr. It came pre-installed with games like the Asphalt and it made the game popular. Then Google bought Motorola, failed to make any profit from the company and sold it off to Lenovo who saw it as a way of finally breaking into the American market. The Motorola brand slowly fizzled out but although it’s still producing new phones thanks to the money from it’s parent company Lenovo.

By the look of things, it seems that HTC dug its own grave. But they are not the ancestor of ALL smartphones. Their ancestry is limited to just Android devices. Even at that the first ever android device (Android 1.0) was the T-Mobile G1 which appeared some months before the HTC dream in 2008.

I think it is due to change in consumers' purchase pattern from buying products based on features/needs to buying based on perception or for status quo.
#TodaysWorld

These other brands that have better features and innovation need to restrategise on their brand postitioning by leveraging influencers that strongly appeal to the young generation.

Apple is now the first trillion dollar company... But believe me, they're next

I'll give them 3/4 more years and if they keep at being obsolete and Xiaomi/One Plus manage to infiltrate The US, they're in trouble

Most of these fones have one thing in common poor design. They all hv quite similar technology

The Symbian htc phones back in the days where trendy or cool bt poor battery when they came on the android platform they stuck to one boring exterior design for years even till now, its android os interface also looks toylike or fragile I can't stand them

Blackberry lost inspiration and where bringing terribly design fones than its predecessor, battery was helping either, bbm wasn't became cumbersome and confusing.

Motorola always had poor design except for blade and a few others bt it had sm consumer confidence probably due to its hardware tech bt the competition has surpassed all dat now.
