CAS UNDERTAKES OPERATIONAL VISIT TO KATSINA, CONDUCTS PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT OF ONGOING OPERATION DIRAN MIKIYA

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, yesterday, 1 August 2018, conducted an operational visit to Katsina to conduct a preliminary assessment of the progress of OPERATION DIRAN MIKIYA. The visit afforded the CAS the opportunity to obtain first hand information on the status of troops, aircraft, ground support equipment and logistics support facilities that had been deployed to ensure the effective conduct of the Operation. The CAS, who was accompanied on the visit by senior officers from Headquarters Nigerian Air Force (HQ NAF), was received at the Umar Musa Yar’adua Airport in Katsina by the new Air Officer Commanding Special Operations Command, Air Vice Marshal Samson Akpasa.

Briefing the CAS and visiting team on the conduct of the operation, the Air Component Commander (ACC) OPERATION SHARAN DAJI, Air Commodore Ayoola Jolasinmi, stated that the intensive operation was aimed at locating and neutralizing armed bandits and other criminal elements with a view to restoring normalcy in Zamfara State and the Northwest as a whole. He then briefed the CAS and his entourage on the current administrative and logistics situation in the theatre of operation as well as the detailed plan to ensure the success of the Operation towards protecting lives and properties of the civil populace. He emphasized that all troops and attack aircraft would operate strictly within the ambit of the specified Rules of Engagement (ROE), in line with global best practices.

The CAS expressed his satisfaction with the logistics and administrative arrangements so far made to ensure the success of the Operation. He assured the ACC that the NAF would continue to provide all that was needed to sustain the morale of participating personnel towards the overall success of the Operation. He then directed that air power’s inherent lethality and firepower should be employed to dominate the area and sustain the onslaught on the armed bandits to end the killings and restore peace to the affected areas.

It would be recalled that the NAF, in compliance with Mr President’s directives, recently deployed additional air assets and troops to Katsina and Gusau and thereafter immediately commenced OPERATION DIRAN MIKIYA.

They're old enough and you'll need a while lot of fund to keep them in a modern state.

Upgrading the jaguars and mig means you should not expect any procurement of 4th generation aircraft. in my view, NAF will lay more importance on numbers of assets ready to be deployed than capability.

The CAS is also a man who admires capability and advance technology so I don't see him going for such thing. It won't help us too. You'll feel like you have much aircrafts while your capability is weak.

Again, on operational requirements any other fighter procurement has to be for air superiority or multirole. The Tucano will handle coin and I'm not sure the F-7 and A-Jet will be resting soon. They're in good shape and overhaul of Airframe may just be conducted. So in term of operational requirement, there's no role ready to be filled by bringing in the Jaguar again.

I'll only suggest upgrading the F-7 once we nordern aircrafts.
People talking about re-activation of dead aircrafts like the Jaguar need to wake up from their slumber.

The Jaguars are beyond repair, plus they are very old aircrafts with no radar. I'll pick the Tucano over the Jaguar anytime and any day.

On a proper multi-role fighter, i don't think the JF-17 Block II is the best aircraft for us at this time. If i were at the helms of affairs, i will instead wait for the Block III to be fully matured and go for that, while we use the F-7s in the interim.

I will instead invest in tactical lift aircrafts, the C-27j or the C-295 (6 units) , 12 - 24 medium lift helicopters for tactical air assault, and additional fairly used Tucanos.

The bulk of defence spending should instead go to the Nigerian navy for the purchase of 4 x Frigates, Corvettes, LSTs, ASW helicopters and 2 x subs.

Also improve army ground equipment.

The JF-17 Block II, like the Gripen C/D and F-16 Block 52 would soon become obsolete, especially when compared to the more capable fighter aircrafts coming on stream.

Purchase of any of the 3 aformentioned aircrafts will not represent a massive lift in capabilities for the Nigerian Air Force.

We've had so many smart Nigerian military guys grace the two military threads over the years.

However, i can say we have never come across a man as knowledgeable and down to earth as you.

I may not agree with some of your posts but i must say it's always a delight reading your posts. Never to big to say when you are wrong, plus insightful analysis in your comments.
Thank you. smiley

Nigeria will not go for a Su aircraft. There has been several talks about the Migs.

American aircrafts version sold to us will be downgraded. British and French aircrafts are expensive. The Chinese and Russians to the help. We have a very good cooperation with India but it all boils down to how ready the Tejas is and others.
Bro the minister too talked about the mig but didn't specify if it was mig-29 or mig 35.

I don't really believe Nigeria will go for tejas because of the mig.

Nice 1 bro. I really enjoy your contributions on this thread.

This makes perfect sense because the JF-17 we are getting shares the same engine as the mig29, I don’t know about the mig35 though

Nigeria is not going for any MIG. The comments made by the minister are not official or FEC sanctioned comments.

He was merely expressing his opinion and preference at the Russian exhibition.

Nigeria has never operated 2 types of Fighter jets, we won't start today.

Yea, The JF 17 is just a Chinese version of the MIG, they did copy and paste on that aircraft.. When guys hype this JF series I'm always vexed. Until they go for a first generation fighter from either America, Russia, France, England or even Sweden e no go move me. If not for our carefree attitude we suppose to be at par with at least India or Pakistan in aircraft manufacture or at least Copy and paste. The most annoying is hyping of Pakistani elevated flying Keke Napep(Super Mushak) by our military Chiefs. Let shame catch us for once biko, though the current NAF under the current CAS is taking very ambitious steps towards self independence. Had it being we have started this immediately after the Civil war, the story would have being different. I visited the umuahia civil war museum I was almost moved to tears when the curator said at the height of the blockade, the defunct biafra made attempt to build aircraft but it couldn't fly, they converted Civilian aircraft to bombers and guided their own bombs (Biafran babies) even shocking was a desperate attempt to build submarines a project the then RAP(Research and Production) spearheaded but was'nt completed before the fall of Biafra. Had it being we tapped into those trying times of desperate engineering we would have being rubbing shoulder with the Chinese by now.

You can’t compare the competitive neighborhood India and Pakistan belong to with our Africa. Not even North African countries produce aircrafts, its not as simple as you think, it requires a whole host of sub industries, even the JF-17 and Tejas are not 100% local content.

The countries that can manufacturer entire aircraft and all its components are very few and in this globalized world becoming even fewer, everything is outsourced, engines, avionics, fuselage.

For example it takes the combined efforts of 6-7 different countries to manufacture segments of the A400M

True talk sha but note that the Airbus is jointly owned by European countries so it is only normal for participating countries to contribute their own quota.
During the WW1 and WW2 the Germans internally and solely developed the Luwaffe, same as the Japanese and the Americans. I am not comparing us with those nations what I'm trying to say is at our "age" we ought to have surpassed our current level. We should be able to at least effectively copy and paste a.k.a reverse engineer aircrafts which is how China became powerful. I still maintain that we have the capability of at least coupling aircrafts parts sometimes last year Innoson motors in conjunction with NAF effectively designed and overhaul the brake assembly of the MB-339 for adoption on the Alpha Jets. With serious funding in the area of research we should be at worst dragging shoulder with India.

PAC JF 17 combines benefits from both MiG as well as F-16 . The JF-17 was evolved from a series of Russian (MiG) conceptual design and an inexpensive, lightweight replacement for the venerable MiG-21 fighter. As such, it was conceived as a short range, air-to-air fighter with minimal ground attack capability.
It is an all metal aircraft, single engine single pilot and lacks vector thrusting, and has high radar signature. Though it is a cheaper alternative to especially to 3rd world countries but totally useless to big countries like USA, Germany etc.

PRESS RELEASE
NAF COMBAT AIRCRAFT RECORD EARLY SUCCESSES IN OPERATION DIRAN MIKIYA, NEUTRALIZE ARMED BANDITS NEAR YANWARI, MASHEMA VILLAGES IN ZAMFARA STATE

OPERATION DIRAN MIKIYA has recorded some early successes, as Nigerian Air Force (NAF) combat aircraft neutralized several armed bandits during air attacks near Mashema Village and at another location 4km Southeast of Yanmari, both in Zamfara State. On 1 August 2018, ground troops, while on clearance operations near Mashema, came in contact with a group of armed bandits at a location West of Mashema Village and therefore requested for air support. Accordingly, a NAF Alpha Jet aircraft from Katsina and an Mi-35M from Gusau were scrambled. In close coordination with troops on the ground, the combat aircraft engaged the bandits’ location with rockets and cannons neutralizing several of them and causing a few survivors to scamper in different directions. The 2 aircraft subsequently pursued the fleeing bandits and thereafter neutralized them in follow-up attacks.

Similarly, while on armed reconnaissance on 2 August 2018, a NAF combat helicopter located over twenty armed bandits dressed in black attire with stolen cattle in their custody, in an open field near Yankari and Hayin Alhaji villages. The bandits, a few of whom were mounted on motorcycles, began to disperse on hearing the sound of the helicopter but were engaged by the helicopters’ machine guns. Several armed bandits were neutralized in the air attack while a few survivors, seen fleeing the location, were taken out in subsequent follow-up attacks.

It will be recalled that OPERATION DIRAN MIKIYA, which commenced on 31 July 2018, is an intensive air operation aimed at locating and neutralizing armed bandits and other criminal elements in the Northwest with a view to restoring normalcy in the affected areas. The Operation will be sustained, in coordination with sister Services and other security agencies, to stop killings, cattle rustling and other criminal activities. Accordingly, the NAF continues to solicit credible intelligence from locals, traditional rulers, local government chairmen and other government functionaries to facilitate the success of the operation.

Germany has whitnessed such a decline militarily, they can’t deoloy 10 euro fighters outside their country even if you were to give them another 2 months to do it.

The JF-17 is not an air superiority fighter so why would thrust vectoring even be a requirement, you need to know that fighter aircrafts come in different categories or weight classes, most modern Air Forces I’m an effort to save costs just get a medium or light multi role fighter to do all the work, meanwhile the more privileged US Air Force has light, medium and heavy fighters, for the air force, navy and marine corps.

The USAF has its own workhorse comparable to the JF17, So it’s not “totally useless” even the A29 super Tucano is being evaluated by the US right now because they have a requirement for an aircraft with its exact capabilities.

The JF-17 is not all metal. It contains considerable composites.

Only Sukhoi SU-27, MIG-35, SU-30, F-22 fighters have thrust vectoring. The rest of the fighters across the world do not have thrust vectoring. I don't see how that's a disadvantage for the JF-17.

What's the radar signature of the JF-17? Provide the exact figure.

Provide evidence to support your claims that the JF-17 evolved from MIG derivatives. Do not post hearsays or your opinion.

Provide evidence from PAC or CATIC.

The JF-17 is a light weight fighter, show us evidence that it's capabilities make it useless against Germany and USA. Better still provide evidence to show it's a poor light weight fighter.

Provide fact based verifiable evidence, i don't need your emotions.
