A NEW DAY

Ndifreke woke up feeling really good. It was not like any day he had known since his arrival in Lagos. The APC senators may have dumped the ruling party in droves, the president may have considered this moment of crisis the best time to sneak out to London for a purported holiday, the APC national chairman may have said they were not losing sleep over the defections, and if it is true that they had put a gun to the head of the influential Senate minority leader Godswill Akpabio to move over to APC after showing him a dossier of all his atrocities as governor and revelation of all the moneys he stashed in different places, then the nation was well and truly on the way to the most intriguing political calculations since the stepping aside of IBB twenty five years ago.

All of that notwithstanding, Ndifreke did not have a care in the world. It was the first time since he arrived in Lagos all those months ago that he knew for sure what was in store for him as he faced the new day. He was not going to overdo himself this first day. His plan was to go to the park, obtain his ticket, stay in the queue and load from one bus stop to the other. When he got tired he would take a break and go back home. The huge deposit he was fortunate to make for the keke meant that he was not under pressure in the beginning to meet any particular targets, and so he could take it easy while he learned the ropes of the trade; get to know how much could be made realistically and then decide how he would pay back his hire purchase. The 160k he already deposited meant he could go for up to four months without paying anything. He was going to begin his business on his own terms.

He selected the best of his two pairs of jeans and wore his best t-shirt. He was not going to do it in rags like he had seen many others. And he would make sure his keke was the cleanest anyone ever boarded.

When he stepped out and went over to the side he parked his keke he saw Irikefe, Mr Cosmas, and Mr Kingsley standing beside his vehicle and smiling at him.

“Good morning everyone. What is happening?”

They all looked at each other and then Irikefe spoke first.

“Bros, being your first day, I want to go with you. You are too gentle for this thing. They will chance you upandan. And those guys at the park will extort all your money from you. I have been a bus conductor before. Let me be your conductor for a start.”

Ndifreke was so moved by this little speech he needed to look away first and then gather his wits.

“My friend. Thank you. But like you know, this is not a bus. It is a tricycle. If I sit in front and give you one of the three seats at the back, that is one-third of my income for one day gone. And I will still pay you.”

Irikefe made to speak but Ndifreke stretched out a palm to hush him. “Eh ehn! Don’t tell me you will do it for free.”

“Hear me out first na, bros. Who told you I want to sit at the back? I will sit in front with you.”

“In front? That should be taking only one person - the driver. I don’t want LASTMA to harass me.”

“Bros na wa o. See why I said you are too gentle for this? Abeg make we dey go joor. How many keke you see wey de driver dey siddon alone for front for dis lagos?”

Ndifreke turned to Mr Kingsley and Mr Cosmas who were waiting to say something.

“Okay let me guess. You will be my first passengers. Alright, let’s go. Enter with your change.”

They all laughed and Mr Cosmas said “You are not far from the truth. But first, let me congratulate you Ndifreke. This is a beautiful and bold step. There is dignity in labour. Our people only come to terms with this when they leave the shores of this country to the West and go and see PHD holders from around the world driving taxis, University students waiting tables for extra income, children of the rich doing internship with small businesses to add and receive value. More often than not these people move on to greater things. Your story will not be different."

“Amen” Ndifreke said.

“Well, I was not prophesying. I was making statements of fact.”

“And I claim it Mr Cosmas. And what is wrong with prophesying?”

“Nothing. Only that more often than not it is about earning where they have not done any work. That is corruption. When your pastors wish you treasures from secret places and unmerited favour they are telling you to go and steal.”

“Ah! Mr Cosmas!”

“Work hard for your money son. Look to getting a bus from here. Then Irikefe can become a proper conductor. And from there you can achieve anything. You would have heard of the stories of men like Ife si na chi, Young Shall Grow, Bob Izua and the rest. Guys that started from the scratch.”

“Some of them did rituals bros,” Irikefe said.

“Okay, what rituals did Richard Branson do? Or…”

“Those are oyinbos.”

“Better believe son. Believe.”

“I believe,” Ndifreke said.

“Good. So, as we were saying, we are your first passengers really. But today you are not going to the park. Once a week, I charter a keke and go round and see new buildings, construction sites and the like and find their owners and then make a proposal to manage the properties. Since you are here now, I will be giving you the contract. I pay the guys four thousand for the whole day. From 8am till 4pm. So, if you’ll like to, be my driver today.”

“With all pleasure sir. Turning to Irikefe he said, “Unfortunately, I won’t be needing a conductor today.”

“But I can still come na, Mr Cosma, please.”

Mr Cosmas thought about it and then said, well, no harm. But how about your work?”

“I already told Mr Josiah I was going somewhere today. I was to go somewhere until Mama Akunna struck again.”

“Hmmm”

“Oya let’s go. What of The Undertaker?”

Irikefe regretted it as soon as he said it. Mr Kingsley scowled at him.

“You people still call him that?” Mr Cosmas said.

“Don’t mind me sir.”

“And to his face?”

“Err, not really. Sorry sir.”

“A child can play with its mother’s breast, but not his father’s testicles – An African Proverb” Mr Kingsley said and entered the Keke and looked away.

Irikefe knew that having quoted Africa, Mr Kingsley was really mad. He knew he had to avoid him throughout that day.

“Kingsley and I and into the same service business. We will be starting something together soon. So know that once a week you will be having both of us for company for the whole day.”

“I’m at your service, sir.”

Ndifreke started his Keke and Mr Kingsley and Irikefe boarded as well. He engaged the first gear and throttled and it jerked forward. He guided it onto the road and started on his way to a new life.

“Congrats again,” Mr Cosmas said. “You must be very happy.”

“Indeed I am. On top of that, I made up with Maya yesterday.”

“Oh, that is nice. Everything working for you son.”

“You can say so sir.”

“I told her she was my wife. She did not understand. She said I should go and pay money first and do what I have to do for her family. Please explain that marriage thing to me again sir.”

“Mr Cosmas chuckled and said, “You want it cheap ehn?”

“But you said that if two people are truly in love that they are effectively husband and wife. Is it not so anymore?”

“Spiritually speaking, yes. But then again, there are laws and customs you must obey. Give unto Caesar what belongs to Caesar. If custom demands a bride price, go and pay a bride price. What I have said to you is that spiritually speaking, where two people who have a common spiritual goal of traversing this harsh universe together as one, come together in pure love, they are already recognized in the spirit as soul mates, as husband and wife. If they become intimate, they have not sinned. If it is okay with their society that they live together even without the stamp of an earthly marriage ritual, their eternity is guaranteed. Such a union is better than the so-called formal marriages tied in the church or mosque or temples or registry where the two have no real affinity with each other and then come together mostly for the purpose of convenience. I tell you, there is no quicker route to hell than this. I repeat; a bad marriage is the quickest route to hell you can find.”

“Jesu!”

“That is because every day of your life you live a lie, in deceit, feel anger, resentment. And if you are poor and need to borrow or even steal at work just to fend for your dependents, then you see what I mean. The bravest people are those who recognize the folly they live in and end such unions and go their separate ways.”

“You mean end it as in divorce?”

“Yes”

“But Christ said…”

“I know what Christ allegedly said. In His time on earth, the marriage relation from the standpoint of Hebrew legislation was looked upon very largely as a business affair. A wife acquired could easily be regarded as a piece of property, which, without great difficulty, could be disposed of in case the husband, for any reason, were disposed to rid himself of an uncongenial companion and willing to forfeit the mohar which he had paid for his wife. Some of the rabbis boldly taught that a man had a perfect right to dismiss his wife, if he found another woman whom he liked better, or who was more beautiful. All a man needed to do then was to write a bill of divorcement and the poor woman was out in the cold. It was the sort of shenanigans Christ sought to correct when he gave his injunction that it is only on the grounds of adultery that you can divorce. It was in a bid to protect the women who were without rights. And also to protect some foolish men who sometimes out of stupidity did away with the best things in their lives just because they could. But nowhere did he say that you must live with treachery, battery, threats to life, or as it is nowadays, business unions gone bad. You will be living in sin every day of your life if you allow a wrongly interpreted creed to bind you in an unworkable union.”

“Hmmm”

“Just as on the other hand, a union where there is true love should not be hindered for any reason. But then, work hard, save up and go and do as custom demands.”

“Thanks Mr Cosmas. We spoke well for the first time since four months” And as they coursed through the bad roads and Ndifreke got accustomed to his new tricycle, he let his mind go back to that moment when he returned to the room with Maya.

He watched her go straight to the bed and lay down.

“Come,” She said.

Ndifreke did as he was asked. They lay close facing the ceiling. Their arms and hips touched, but no one made any attempt to get any closer.

“What do you really think about this thing with the nurse?” Ndifreke said.

“I don’t know.”

“Thank you for not going to her last night.”

Ndifreke’s ears stood up as she said that. “What do you mean Maya?”

“I have worked it out Ndi.”

“Worked what out?”

“She couldn’t answer the question why she did not shout for help. No one even asked how Wasiu got to her room. Did he break in? Unlikely. Then why didn’t she lock her door?”

“Maya…”

“You don’t have to say anything Ndi. None of it was your fault. And you accomplished the hardest part which was staying away.”

Ndifreke reached out and locked fingers with hers.

“I saw when she accosted you this morning. I did not hear a word she said but I thought you two had fought. It’s after the revelation I figured she came to you believing you were her lover last night.”

Ndifreke now bolted upright into a sitting position.

“Lie back Ndi. Like I said, you accomplished the most important part. Thank you.”

Ndifreke somehow found that he was still able to breathe.

“I missed you.”

“I missed you too Maya.

“Our baby died.”

Ndifreke never looked at it in that light and it was jarring to hear it from Maya.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

“No Maya. You shouldn't say that.”

“I failed it. And I failed you.”

“You did no such thing. You had an accident.”

“I should not have had the accident. I was too weak. I couldn’t carry the baby.”

“You were manipulated and you fell. If you did not fall, the baby would have still been there. But it is all in the past now. For weeks, I thought a day like this would never come. I am happy to have you back Maya. If it is the will of God, we will have another baby.”

“This time, we will have to be married first.”

“We are already married, Maya.”

“My mum does not think so.”

“I know,” Ndifreke said and kept quiet.

“I’m happy you are starting something. We can finally be together when you have made some money.”

“Yes, we can Maya.”

“My mother needs money from my head. Come and go and pay.”

“I understand dear.”

Maya then rolled on top of Ndifreke and said, “Do you still want me?”

“I want you Maya. But are you ready?”

“I am.”

Ndifreke than kissed her. It was deep and probing. Then she came up for air and said: “Do you have a condom?”

“No Maya. I have never really had a need for it.”

“Okay. When you go out tomorrow, get some. I have to go now.”

“I understand.”

Chisco recognized the car at once. It was the car that the boyfriend of the nurse drove. He had just finished for the afternoon and had rolled up his bale and loaded on the keke he always chartered. But he could not take his eyes off the parked Camry. Then he saw the man count money and give to another man whom he at first did not recognize. Then the other man alighted and quickly made his way to the sports betting shop on the other side of the road. It was Wasiu! Chisco then spoke to the keke driver.

“Nna, carry am go house. I go call my broda make e come collect am when you reach.”

He then went after Wasiu.

The shop was crowded with area boys, some of whom smoked weed openly. Chisco heard the hearty cheers when Wasiu entered the shop and decided to linger in the adjoining shop where the owner sold bags of all shapes and sizes. Before long, Wasiu hushed his adulators and began to talk. Chisco listened, cringed, frowned and then started running back to Number 225 Katakata Street.

TO BE CONTINUED.

. Phew... Eye opening update... BTW, even though Money paid to bride's family is commonly called dowry, the correct word is bride price. Dowry is what the Indians practice and what used to be practiced in Rome. The woman's family pays money or transfers some property on behalf of the woman to the man's family before marriage.

Very true. Even though this was in the sense of Nigerian English. But I guess I'd better edit as an important issue as this should not be misinterpreted. Thanks man.
