Are There Solutions That Can Make Nigeria Actually Work? by selemempe(op): 5:46am On Aug 04, 2018
Though I support Biafra and disintegration, the truth is that I will actually choose a Nigeria that works over Biafra.
The reason is because a Nigeria that works could actually be Africa's first global power. A Biafra that works can hardly be that. Nigeria has the population to be a major global player. All the little countries we want to break Nigeria into doesn't have that potential.
So I ask the question: how can we actually move Nigeria from third world to developed status within the next 50 years?
What do we have to do or change or introduce in our socio/politico/economic scene to do that within the next 50 years? To move our gdp from $500 billion to $1 trillion, to reduce our poor population and improve all infrastructure to developed standards.

I need intelligent contributions on this without 'afonja' 'Igbo' 'aboki' jibes. Without APC or PDP nonsense. Say what you think can be done.

Mynd44 lalasticlala seun take this to front page if you can. Lets see what our internet age youths think could make Nigeria great and make politicians to start working and stop stealing or fooling around. Afterall Nairaland is against secession.

Let the states have enough powers to make policies, control their resources and develop independently

Instead of dragging the whole country in any policy, let policies be made and implemented at sub national level

For instance, national feeding program is rubbish, the respective states should be doing that to appreciate the impact
Southern states don't appreciate it cos we are not so comfortable about strangers feeding our children not to talk of the idea that we should be fed at all
But northern states are comfortable because, waiting and lining up to be fed is somehow their way of life

Instead of wasting billions on transmission to interconnect the entire country, why not each state becomes autonomous in generation and distribution

Tax the people, then they would look for who would serve them best irrespective of tribe

It's easier to steal money we were given than to steal money we all contributed painfully

Yes ofcourse there are solutions, my people say that the only problem thatt does not have a solution is death. let me drop a single bumper SOLUTION, to Nigeria's problem: i call it re-orientation. The country Nigeria was built on lies, tribalism, religious fanaticism and corruption. there should be a serious re-orientation of the younger generations, they should be taught the undiluted core values of truth, honesty, justice and equity. this will take a take years to change their mentality, i call re-orientation the SUPER SOLUTION to Nigeria's problems

In order to achieve our potential as a nation, we need a government that will fix the power situation, simple. Fix the power situation and watch Nigeria grow beyond our imaginations. Without power we will remain a sleeping giant

The only solution is getting Nigeria back to factory setting. We need to start allover. The whole nation needs to be wiped out except 2 little innocent kids, male and female.

Yes, so many solutions but then, who will listen to you?
Our politicians knows the solution but the last concern on their mind is Nigeria and Nigerians.

Our government is a government of section, money and power. They are not after the state of the country or the affairs of the people, they are too old, lame, corrupt, most of them illiterates, and greedy enough to know what to do and concerned enough to do them.

Again, we the citizens are part of the problem too. Amalgamation of Nigeria to start with is so wrong! Just look at the way we reason as different tribes and tell me if Nigeria will ever achieve that height? We are too different to agree to achieve.

The only solution is to teach our indiginous technology before colonization in schools and universities so that we can turn our raw materials to finished goods ourselves and to continue improving on it and to then begin to export them to other countries

Firstly, the education sector. we need to stop supporting runs and other malpractices. We need to celebrate scholars and professors more than we celebrate stars or what do you call them. Cheating and unprofessional behaviors must be frown at by all and sundry. We must revisit our education approach and make sure they can aid reorientation, regional and national development.

Politically, parties must consider and field candidates with ideas and expertise to achieve the ideas. Political forms should be affordable. All political parties must be based on ideas. Adoption of two parties. Stringent measures and laws for politicians e.g. their children must school in Nigeria. Their health issues must be addressed in Nigeria, etc.

Economically, aggressive food sufficiency should be pursued. Nigerians must be encouraged to detest external commodities or goods. We must boost manufacturing and industrial organizations.

and many more...

Issues like epileptic power supply, bad roads, poor education system, poor health care, etc, are all symptoms of the problem.

For Nigeria to witness a period of peace and prosperity for the first time since the 60s, it first has to be reset back to factory setting; ie, return back to the structure agreed upon by all the regions prior to independence (of course with slight modifications to reflect present day realities).

Every region should have the autonomy to be able to chart its own economic journey without having to wait for Abuja to give the greenlight on everything! They should own the resources found within their regions/states and pay a tax or percentage of profits to the centre like was done in the 60s. Critical economic enablers like seaports and aviation should be on the concurrent list so regions/states are not beholden to the whims and caprices of Abuja and whosoever happens to be the president at the time. Regions/states should have their own police and constitutions. The centre should be made less attractive like it was in the 60s when the likes of Ahmadu Bello preferred to be Premier of his region rather than Prime Minister of Nigeria. Quota system should be phased out over say a ten year period, and merit should be the primary consideration for getting appointments at the centre. Recruitment and appointments can be handled by a international recruitment organisation....this would help spur regions on to compete with one another when the playing field is level and fair, and Nigeria would be better off for it.

If the above is done, it would engender a new sense of nationalism and pride for ones country, the kind of which hasn't been witnessed since the early 60s! Not only that, it would also it take the wind out of the sails of separatist organisations like IPOB, and would encourage FDIs and tourism which as a consequence would push Nigeria into the league of the top ten most developed countries within ten to fifteen years!

drinks are on me bro...take anything u want.

Wat i have been saying since. Recognise the 6 geopolitical zones as the federating units. Make north central and south south to be a minority-only zone. Which means the hausa-fulani and the yorubas found in north central should be joined with north west, north east and south west respectively. The igbos of ss should be joined with se.

Allow zones to own 50% of their resources. Allow zones to create their own local govt or provinces. Allow MOST things to be on concurrent list so that zones and fg can participate.

Offshore oil should then be shared equally among all zones and fg as a national asset. But the south south zone should get a little more than others in offshore oil sharing since oil minning infrastructure is in their region

ITbomb:
What about the oil money, that the most important equation that turns the debate upside down

My humble opinion is that, the best way to make Northern Nigeria accept restructuring and also to help them evolve to economic independence is to reintroduce a modified offshore/onshore dichotomy

All onshore and "extended nautical miles" oil resources are exclusive rights of the bordering states or province

Deep Offshore petroleum revenue will continue to be shared with the current formula but no more 13% derivation.

This will enable states to still have some funds even though it might be smaller but they will be prompted to use the money and invest in all those stuff usually listed as benefits of restructuring

The deep offshore money will be used to maintain the national army, judiciary and other items reserved for the federal government instead of waiting for only taxes from states which some restructuring Advocates propose.

That will make the federal government still powerful enough to instill national unity and cohesion

the solution to the nigeria problem is BIAFRA, let biafra go and every other group will find the reason to go too and this will make every group to think deep outside oil which in know is the only reason you are still hearing of nigeria today. I know that every group has what it takes and the brains to succeed as a country

A lot of people say that if Nigeria can work, it can be the true "Giant Of Africa" and a global power power broker.

Having a huge population is not the issue, its all about what you can offer. Switzerland has a population of 8 million people but has a GDP close that of almost 200 million Nigerians.

It is better to be a smaller unit like Switzerland that works than be part of greater entity like Nigeria that has not worked since Lord Lugard went back to Britain decades ago.

This idea that "we must all be Nigerians" is stale, even our colonial masters, Briatain, that created Nigeria Nigeria did not follow this train of thought.

Britain granted its own colonial creation, Nigeria, independence in 1960

Britain granted one of its territories, Northern Ireland, a referendum in 1971

Britain granted another of its territories, Scotland, an independence referendum in 2014

Yet, Britain works as a nation

So the idea that if Nigeria works, and it doesn't, is not even the issue.

The issue is do we want to be together? Do we want to be a nation? I can't speak for other tribes but as an Igbo man, I want my tribe to be given a referendum if we want to be part of Nigeria

It is only after people have agreed to try to be a nation, agreed to a unifying constitution and system of government do you talk about moving forward.

That is lacking in Nigeria

So Nigeria may be a country, but it is not a nation. We can't be a nation because Lugard brought us together. We have already killed each other in the millions, in a civil war, to prove that point.

A sovereign national conference to decide the basis of our union will never be held, the core North will never agree to it.

So the only alternative is to grant the region's who have agitated for independence, the Igbos and some tribes who comfortably with Igbos, a referendum for them to decide if they want to carry on being Nigerians or seek a separate existence.
