Is there any clause in Ur employment letter dt ur pay will be reviewed upward after confirmation. If yes, they might not confirm you quickly to avoid increase pay. So, talk abt Ur confirmation and not pay increase. If you see them not confirming u at d long run, look outside then. I mean look for another employment

Be patient man, It will surprise you soon that your salary will be double during your confirmation to full staff.l had similar challenged in 2011 while working with UAC plc with a salary of 13500 ,until after six(6) months before we were confirmed with a new appointment letter with basic salary of 25500 and other bonuses, feeding twice both in night or day shift etc. What you and Co should do now is to fight to be confirm at every meeting you attend after your six months there but be careful not to be the loud speaker among your Co, if not you will be fire after sometime or they make your life miserable with work and frustrate you which Will force you to quit yourself.

To the post, if your are working in a well structured company, write a formal letter TO THE APPROPRIATE officer(s) (if your direct line manager isnt helping, copy appropriate senior staff) and thank them for the chance given to you to work in their firm and stating to your employer to remind them when you where employed and how long you have worked so far (be diplomatic and tactful in your writeup). Tell them how you have taken the work seriously, gained skills and looking forward to add more value to the company.

At this point, you can't ask for a raise per se. Let them confirm you (most times come with a raise and /or other benefits. I have been in your shoes.

@OP, I'll advice you be patient first. Its not automatic to confirm appointment after six months. For some people, it could take up to a year plus before it could be confirmed.
Your employer reserved the right to either confirm, put you on more probational period or even show you the way out.
You are the one that assumed your work is satisfactory but your employer may think otherwise.
Dont let oversabi spoil your chances of retaining your job.
It might even be a way to test your patience or where your loyalty lies.
You need to be humble and work harder to convince your employer that you are up to the task.

RicoBee, let me tell you about Nigerian Employers. They do not give a hoot about you. They never forgot about their probationary period, they deliberately made sure they omitted it. I don't know why you think a Company will be happy paying you more, No they won't. Paying you less is their greatest happiness irrespective of how productive you are.

Also discussing with your line manager is good but know that your line manager is also fight for himself *ONLY*. He/She really does not care about your well being.

What you should do is be overly searching for another job offer,

(1) Make it a deliberate decision to Apply to at least 3 Jobs a day,.
(2) Take time out to go for Interviews, you can call in sick some days.
(3) If you get a better offer, then present it to your company & ask that they improve your Wages.

This is not to make you feel bad, but the earlier the better you know that your Nigerian employer doesn't want the best for you. THE BETTER.

Speaking from experience. First send a formal mail to the HR seeking confirmation of your appointment. The email should have details of your appointment letter like starting date,how long you've worked, job description and terms and conditions of employment. Bear in mind that this may lead to a review of your performance so get ready for that. Normally during the review (mine was questioners and oral review) you may have a chance to mention a raise when asked about your expectations.
Based on the result of your review, you can then formally ask for a raise along with any other benefit your company offers confirmed staff.

Nigerians are sometimes there own nightmares not there boss. Nobody heard the guy speaking in terms of his contracts. He said the agreement was six months before probation and confirmation.

What is wrong with asking people to honor there agreement. If he has not perform as expected under the six months probation period. Why not drop him. If he has why not proceed to the next stage as stated in the agreement.

Nigerians please learn to know your rights. And try not to always negotiate from positions of weakness. You give yourself away too cheaply with unnecessary fear.

Bro, let me just add to what has been said.
1. The first thing you need to do is compile results you've achieved for the company. Saying you're productive is subjective - results on the other hand do not lie.
2. Formally asked to be confirmed. write to your immediate superior, copy his/her Boss and HR. Highlight the results you've achieved for the firm, and politely asked for a review or meeting to discuss your career growth within the firm (of course to enable you add more value to them).
3. Update your CV with results stated in 1 above. and start passively applying for other positions.
4. If called for a meeting or review, make sure you have handy the list you compiled in 1 above, don't assume they'll remember. it's your bargaining chip no one can fault.

As a Nigerian employer in multiple companies, I was just about to type pretty much this to you .

One of my employees just asked for the same thing yesterday. My answer was simple. "Why do you think you deserve a raise?" I'm waiting for his answer. Unbeknownst to him, he was already on the books to be given one hopefully his response doesn't change that.

Do not attempt this unless you have solid data to back why you deserve one and "I've been here 6 months and been productive" is not a solid reason. You're SUPPOSED to be productive. Have you accomplished more than you're supposed to and set yourself apart in any way? Simply doing your job is not enough.

Also, six months just coming off probation is a little early to be asking unless it was one of the terms of your hire that pay would be reviewed in six months when you got off probation. In my employee's case, it was one of the terms otherwise I would not entertain his request for a year.

Long Answer Warning

As with everything, people "grow"; they have an ever increasing need to do well and be better than when they started, their needs and wants also grow to reflect certain stages and phases of their lives.

That having been said, I will start with influence of inflation on income and according to Investpedia real income refers to the income of an individual or group after taking into consideration the effects of inflation on purchasing power. For example, if you receive a 2% salary increase over the previous year and inflation for the year is 1%, then your real income only increases by 1%.

In Nigeria on the other hand Nigeria; in 2017, the average inflation rate in Nigeria amounted to about 16.5 percent compared to the previous year which means your salary lost a 16.5% of its value every year. To survive this, one has to ask for an increase that is equal or greater than 16.5% so you they'd be capable of affording basic necessities.

Else they would be working and feel like they're being punished as their take home pay cannot afford the rising increase in the price of foodstuff, other commodities and services like data plans and TV subscription.

This is why DSTV and co. increases their fees every year, it's just to maintain their profit margins. They've been trying to beat loses accrued to inflation since they began operating.

In conclusion, it'll be disingenuous to one's sense of survival to continue on a particular salary for more than a year without asking for an increase or raise.
