Nigerian who crossed Mediterranean narrates own tale in new book ‘Irregular Migrant’ August 13, 2018Jayne Augoye In debut novel, Nigerian writer tackles illegal migration, get-rich quick syndrome Peterson Ojieson’s debut novel, Iregular Migrant: A story of Perils, Triumphs and Karma, has a very compelling storyline. Not only does it relieve the author’s perilous sojourn to Europe through the Sahara desert and the Mediterranean Seas, it also sheds light on the get-rich quick syndrome. He tells PREMIUM TIMES more about the work in this interview PT: Is your book a fictional account or your true-life experience? Peter: Yes, my book The Irregular Migrant: A story of perils, triumphs and karma is a true life account of my experience as a 21 year old who had dropped out of from school and decided to migrate to Europe through the deserts and seas, in a bid to help get my family out from the throes of poverty. PT: Is it your first novel and what is the story or inspiration behind the book? Peter: It is my first novel. The inspiration behind the book comes from the need to contribute my quota at stemming the tide of irregular migration, the unnecessary sufferings and incessant lost of lives as a result of this dare devil mode of migration. I decided on telling my story, as it is, to pass on a message to the youth on the importance of staying in school, the risks involved in travelling through the desert and how it doesn’t pay in the long run, to take to a life of get-rich-quick. PT: Tell us a bit about you? Peter:My name is Peterson Ehimare Ojieson, I am a father, husband, and a budding writer, from Esan Central Local Government Area, of Edo State, Nigeria. My book explains the many perils I came upon along the way in the course of my journey, the triumph after almost two years on the road, of finally making it across the Mediterranean, and into Europe, the karma that came visiting, after I had gotten entangled in the criminal underworld of online scam in a bid to get rich quick. My story highlights how, as it is with anything illegally acquired, they’d get frittered away because the only shortcut to success remains hard work, honesty and dignity. PT: What plans do you have for this book? Peter: My plans for this book is to be able to get it to reach every nook and cranny of Nigeria because of its relevance to our parents, children, the government and our society at large. Iregular Migrant: A story of Perils, Triumphs and Karma, By Peterson Ojieson PT: Have you considered speaking with some filmmakers about the possibility of turning it into a movie or series? Peter: Yes, that is certainly one of my dreams. But presently I haven’t spoken to anyone yet, and besides I have no contacts to any producers, hope someone might reach out to me. PT: What are some of the challenges you faced writing the book? Peter: It was huge struggle writing the book, because it made me relieve all of the sad experiences I had battled and bottled up in the last 19-20 years. I’d thought of discontinuing on the writing so many times because of the pains and sobs in between. However, the need to tell the story, to teach, direct, motivate someone out there helped me through with the writing. I did it for myself too, to let out all the bottled up emotions and trauma, and start the process of healing. By the way, my siblings have just read about this part of my life through this book and everyone is rightly both shocked and surprised. PT: There appears to be no end in sight for irregular migration and trafficking in persons. Do you think this menace can be stemmed? Peter: Migration in itself is as old as civilisation. While the menace cannot be completely eradicated, it sure can be stemmed or made unattractive. This is what prompted my book and story. PT: Are you a self-published author? Peter: I am a self-published author still battling with the right channel to publish traditionally; still trying to get the funds to print paperbacks of my book for distribution. Wished the government, corporate organisations and well meaning individuals would see the relevance of this book and sponsor the publication and distribution, as a way of contributing their quota to stemming this ugly tide of irregular migration. I hope to get sponsors who’d help me in mass-producing my book. Loved it. Binge read it all in about four hours at midnight from Okadabooks. Keep making those little adverts on NL where you said you waka the whole Lagos etc, that was how I remembered that you once wrote an unfinished story on NL and I really wanted to finish it. Then I went ahead to download the Okadabooks app. I'm doing survey for you o... Amazing work considering it's your first. You deserve some accolades. You just need to work on painting a better picture for the readers. People really like things like that. 2 Likes |

So guys here's a poem I had written when I was about venturing into the desert proper. I lost the original along the way but had to redo this.. Hope you'd like and enjoy it... (A last letter from the desert) In Loving Memory of the Fallen Desert Warriors.. Staring out into the desert plains All I see is a wall of sand East, west, north and south I feel like a needle in this endless stack As I'm set to venture in With my bread loaf as hard as a rock And my money in my bowels saved Through my rectum I had it banked Oh water-can, I plead My thirst to quench I hope And if my truck should die Make me your meal o maggots My flesh to you I give Promise you'd evolve and make a flight To Nigeria and announce my plight 37 Eweje street is my home Tell them the desert won Tell the truth about its tale The tale of me and my likes 'Twasnt the plan, but now I'm lost If I be not fleshy to eat As the sun my body dries On the scorching sand I lay Dying with my eyes unshut A mummified me is what you'd find If you ever journeyed through But I pray you never will This letter I hope you read. If the sands inter me not And you wish to honour me As you move my dried out body Do not fail to find this letter. We came, we saw, most of us got conquered. Keep resting in peace fallen desert warriors. Copyright Peterson Ojieson 2018 14 Likes 2 Shares |

Hola gaby y gilgee Video is the best way to get your story heard and inspire loads of people especially Españoles and the rest of the world. I owned a freelance media company back in 3-4 yrs ago and shut down after a lot of companies and clients fled España becos of the recession (ps: google d'nami media) and later I relocated to Oosterhout. Para mi seguridad, no quiero compartir mi locacion ni el pais donde vivo, por aqui. Tu conoces Nigerianos y sabes como son. Too damn nosy. I'd love to shoot a documentary about this and pitch it to Universal Pictures, London or to telecinco, canal+ etc, spain. I reckon your story is a better look for blacks out there and will give a lot of ignorant spaniards a deeper look into the reasons for migration, besides looking at every black man like he was Lorey Money. Si tienes mas amigos con este experencia y piensas que este tema le interesan, mandame un email ************@gmail.com or escribirme por aqui en "contacto". Que tengas un buen dia. Un saludo |

centboy123456: Please, I write this because of the huge burden of losing my relative who was as eager as you to return to Europe by all means necessary but he died out of the same desperation despite making money. He first made it to Germany using an illegally-bought visa, back in the day when schengen visas carried no face and people purchased visas on passport pages and inserted it into oluwole passports. That night of his arrival, he was persuaded to go clubbing with a few people he met at the house where he stayed. That same night a fight broke out at the club where he was present and the German Police began their immigration control to identify those who were illegally residing in that state. One by one they were checked and immediately he was scooped to the Immigration Detention Center where he was deported to Nigeria a few days later. He relocated to cotonou where he lived for over 10yrs. He began a successful used clothing business and he was doing quite well until he began having Yes Men, spending and living the lavish life. This led to his downfall. He relocated back to Nigeria, struggling and doing his best to survive. It was during this time that we met and instantly i could see through his good heart. He was like a brother i never had. We became so close and i decided I was gonna help him out. I connected him to a family member and we discussed a sum to come up with so he could return to his former business. He was given a fresh start and with the money he returned to cotonou but we never knew he still longed for Europe. From what we heard he was doing so well in cotonou again in less than a yr and he kept it touch occasionally. Outta da blue one day, he calls me up telling me he's in Libya. I was shocked and asked for his motive. He told me he had embarked on the journey to Europe by road and I need fear not cos he was doing well. He said he was stuck in libya dealing drugs and he would eventually buy his way there. He made a lot of money and I convinced him to join me in the shipping business to and fro Nigeria and leave Libya. He agreed and even sent money to buy some goods. So when I called him up to discuss the list of goods, he asked me to keep the money stating that the money should serve as his token of gratitude for what i did for him back then. I refused to accept but his usual self laughed it off and told me he would never accept it back....$1000. He promised me he was gonna come back to Nigeria when he'd made enough money. The "enough money" part i never really understood. We kept in touch as he always sought my advice and I was always looking for a way out for him then all of a sudden he stopped calling. 2 yrs went by and i never heard from him. So i decided to visit his sister at computer village when i visited. She told me he was dead stating that she received a phone call saying he died from drugs he had swallowed to transport to the buyers. I never believed the story but I wept profusely. He always told me stories of how libyan forces were raiding apartments and killing Nigerians, plus how they were being trafficked by libyans for other treacherous reasons. He once told me of how he saw his friend get shot dead before him while they were on the run. I concluded he must have been shot or butchered for this was the faith of Nigerians shortly after Gaddafi was killed and libya was destroyed. 2 yrs after gaddafi's fall was when my relative was situated in libya. His family never saw the body hence they never gave him a burial. He was the only son. So I say to you, think about the ones that love you and look up to you before you make any life-threatening decision; for they are okay now but if you die, how many can bear the loss and how many will suffer as a result of your actions. Its been 6 yrs now and I still mourn him. His demise will always serve as a lesson to all that knew him 28 Likes 7 Shares |

Have you sold the story elsewhere? If you are willing to do a movie script with this story, please let's talk. This is a very good story and I can arrange meeting with top names in the industry.
