Just use the 2m to open a lawfirm in Nigeria

What kind of a human being is this? You are asking a lawyer who may not have handled one case in the court to open a law firm?

Wonderful!!!
How did you manage to get 4.02 CGPA, resident permit and even get an admission for master's degree in the "state" with your bad grammar and woeful writing skill?
While English is not everything, one of these feats must surely require some sort of English proficiency demonstration.
So tell me, are you truly in "state" or are you just another UNIZIK or ESUT Mechanical Engineering student battling with O.D.E in second year but hoping to work in the US in the future.

You're simply nut man!
Must you make mention of those two institutions
I'm certainly sure they're very much better than most universities in Nigeria.

See this mumu throwing feet at unizik and Esut as if they produce dunce.

unless u have other stuff to do

best you use your 2M and do a business locally and grow it before you think of going abroad

crayfish and Oil and other stuff are very cheap in the south, with even 1M you can take these to ABJ and LAG and make good profit weekly

2M Abroad is nothing

The Law field is saturated in the US, even American lawyers are lamenting. You better ditch your law degree if you coming to the US and look to start afresh in IT or medical field. If you did not go to a prestigious law school and have good connections coming to the US to practise law is a total waste of time, don't let no one deceive you.

There is no doubt that Nigeria is tough; however, if you can spot something here, it will last longer than what you get outside. Immigration law in the US is really discouraging, and I think it is better Nigerians start looking elsewhere if anyone wants to relocate abroad. OP should even consider the UK before the US.

Like someone rightly posted above that crayfish and oil businesses are lucrative in Nigeria. Yes, it is true, anything food is lucrative. If you want to even make it bigger, food production is very profitable. Fruits sales agents in open market are making huge cash. Same with modern food producers. Not saying it is not good to go abroad, but will not be a do or die affair. For me, the US is at the bottom of the chart where I advise anyone go out of all the listed countries. New Zealand has got the best quality of life for her citizens.

Your number one problem will be your accent, then your degree is from Nigeria.
No judge want to listen to you when you have a thick accent that will be difficult for him or her to understand.
Nobody want to hire you to represent them on a case, I am talking from experience.
The only thing most foreign people with a law degree do is to become an IMMIGRATION LAWYER.

My Experience:
I went to court to dispute a ticket giving to me by a cop. When they called my name which was difficult for the person calling it I knew I am in trouble, then as soon as I open my mouth to talk the judge ordered everybody in the room to keep quite and said we have someone with accent here. I didn't even talk for 2mins he just told me to go and pay the damn ticket..

2nd experience:
A friend of mine lost a case because she hired a Nigerian man to represent her in court.
Accent!Accent!Accent!
Most of our guys here with law degree from Nigeria are mostly into immigration cases.

Think about it.
haha but he could work on his accent naucheesy. Hollywood star Colin Farrell before he came to the US had to work on his really thick Irish accent before he started working on hollywoodcheesy. Dont u think op can achieve dat featcheesy.

Hi, my name is Jay currently based in dc usa.
I studied mech engine back in naija with CGPA 4.02. I came to state for my masters degree. After msc, i stayed back, mind u im a permenent resident. With experience i have here in state, i wud advice u to stay back in naija and start somtin wt d 2m while u pursue and advance your career, coming to state with student visa/f1 and buget of 2m naira without back up would frustrate u. Dont hope of gaining full employment after msc bc no firm would file work permit base on your course. If u wish of staying back after msc, think of starting afresh, think of health related courses, a lot of hospitals and nursing homes would file work permit provided u are willing to dance to their condition.
Thanks

People can always discouraged u here, but the best thing to do is take ur time do ur research well and off u go to anywhere u want to go. If u listen to what people will tell u here sometimes ehhh u will jst give up on ur dreams. Some people wey dey comment here never even go abroad and some are even praying to have that 2 million and move out. If u give them that two million now they no even know which business dem go start self. UR DECISION ARE URS AND URS ALONE. IF YOU FAIL IT'S BECAUSE OF UR WRONG DECISIONS AND IF U SUCCEED U WILL BE PROUD OF URSELF.

I'm a legal attorney in New York... And the legal market in the U.S is quite lucrative and competitive, 2 million naira won't get u anywhere... You need something huge financially, you can apply for your masters in any cheap university and also enroll for the American Bar Exams.

Someone made reference to accent being a snag and people not wanting to hire you because of same or because of being black.

I have a distant cousin in NY, he made an unsuccessful attempt at NY Bar Exams last 2 years and got depressed. He owed rent then because he reduced working hours so as to prepare for exams.
He now works with an Insurance Company.

Generally could you give brief insight into what the practice is like there please?

Sorry, I couldn't read your post with a straight face.

Unlike a lot of professions here in Naija, being a lawyer is very, very lucrative if you know what you're doing. While relocating abroad is a good idea, considering the state of things here, 2 million Naira is far from enough.

know what you are doing

What exactly please?

Any pointer or clue please?

Actually, I am a UNIZIK alumni and that is why I turned out just fine and won't stoop low to exchange words with you. My post did not in any way denigrate any of the institutions I mentioned.
The only way you can arrive at such conclusion is if you have serious challenges with English Language yourself.

Short answer - you need to retrain if you would like to successfully move abroad to the common-law jurisdictions.

I'd advise against an LLM, its generally a waste of your funds unless you target the specialized fields where you already have some experience (tax law comes to mind here).

Retrain.

Yes, you are certainly right, I have serious challenges with English Language. I'm not surprised, you're seemingly a product of ignorance. But you can never in your miserable life attain the height of where my "seriously challenged" English Language has taken me just yet.

It's only slowpokes that bash people on an invented/lent language that's not even ours.

You dey doubt person location because of "your perceived" grammatical error. Boy try get sense ooo!

This section has been very helpful.

I am a young lawyer and on the verge of rounding off my NYSC.

I have been thinking of how to secure a good future hence have been considering migrating to Canada or the USA.

Law is not a STEM course and switching career may not be easy at all.

I am wondering if there are opportunities for Lawyers in Canada or the USA (or even New Zealand, Australia.)

I am looking at migrating via Masters degree --- that''s if I can gain a full or partial scholarship with 3.9 CGPA on a 5 point scale or migrating through Canadian FSW.

Or do I just stay back in Nigeria?

I can raise 2 million naira.

Suggestions needed please. I am tired. Seriously tired because the future looks bleak.

You studied a professional course at the University. it wouldn't be a bad idea to venture into professional practice.

first, set up a fiverr account. Set up 5 gig services that you can deliver as a lawyer over the internet whether it's drawing up a simple legal contract or whatever (use your head). All this costs you $0.00, just time that you would otherwise spend chasing meaningless stuff. Then, take 150k from that 2m and spend it on digital ads all over the internet. Youd be advertising your fiverr gigs. When you start getting work, you will recoup this adspend in 3 months or less. When work starts being too much for you, come back to naira land and hire people as a thank you for this idea. Finally, as a thank you to me, send 50k as the consultation fee.

If you stay back in Nigeria, with the 2m you can open a law firm or set up a business.
If you plan traveling out, I think you should start writing GRE and IELTS and score very high in them. There are scholarships for most schools in the US or canada. If you do secure scholarship, I don't know if they will allow you work. Just do more search.
My Advise is, if you have the 2m handy, pls do business in Nigeria.
If you don't have the 2m handy, pls, start writing GRE AND IELTS
someone with a degree do not need to write ielts again as he or she as satisfy the English language requirements

Law is a very lucrative practice here and within 10 years, you are bound to be doing very well here if you are super focused on it

Forget travelling since you are not familiar with the environment there

If you had done your degree program overseas, I would have advised you to stay there

You may have to suffer for like 5 years here while you gain the much needed work experience which will be the stepping stone to a successful career as a lawyer

If need be, join lots of clubs in future such as country club, Ikoyi club, Island club and so to network

I am a Nigerian qualified lawyer and live in Australia. Believe me there are lot of options even for overseas qualified lawyers as we are reffered to. Compliance, corporate governance, whistleblowing analyst, Corrections, social work, legal assistant or you can also apply to work with the various ombudsmen.

It not law as you see it in Naija but it draws on your legal knowledge which help you excel.

If however you are interested in litigation, then you have to go back to school for the priestly 11 which is divided into 14 or 15 units depending on the University and law school for 6 months.
