Episode 29 (Chapter 25)

He was not looking too different from Tomiwa. He wore a dejected look and was a shadow of himself exactly like Tomiwa. His eyes resembled the eyes of someone battling with the pains of heartbreak. The moment he saw Tomiwa with Shade with smiling faces, his pain tripled. Tomiwa could relate to what he was going through and pitied him the same way he pitied himself the moment Tomiwa saw him. He walked straight to Shade and on getting there he looked at Tomiwa with eyes full of disgust and a penetrating venom that almost bore holes into Tomiwa’s skin. Tomiwa was lost. He did not understand why he deserved that look but quickly understood what was wrong by the time the drama between the guy and Shade started.

“Shade! What is wrong with you? Didn’t you see my calls? And why weren’t you picking my calls?” He asked angrily but Shade was prepared for him.

“No, Tade don’t start! What is the meaning of all these? Do you want to disgrace yourself in public?” Shade snapped back at him.

“Okay, can we talk?” He mellowed down.

“I am not ready to talk. I have already told you that I am no longer interested!”

“But you owe me an explanation, Shade. If you had to break up with me, at least, courtesy demands that you let me know why instead of treating me like a piece of shit from your anus.”

“What other explanation do you want outside the one I already gave?”

“You call that an explanation? That three-line-text-message you sent to me, telling me you were breaking up with me? That’s your explanation, abi?”

The scenario was becoming a heated argument between the two of them. They were about creating a scene that would get ugly. Tomiwa couldn’t interfere, the best he could do was to keep quiet and watch. Though Tade didn’t say it, he knew that Tade was thinking he was the man at the bottom of it all. Seeing Shade and Tomiwa talked with such warmth made him conclude that Tomiwa was the new guy she was going out with and the reason for the breakup.

“Tade, you want to create a scene, abi? Then go ahead! If you don’t know, this is one of the reasons I’m leaving you. I can’t stand you disgracing me in public and your wanton shenanigans any longer!”

On hearing those words, Tade’s aggression subsided in a flash. He became as gentle as a dove.

“But Baby, why are you doing this now? You know I love you dearly. Please we can still make this work. Please don’t do this, I beg you.” Poor Tade begged her. He was almost crying. Tomiwa looked at him and felt pity for him again. It was obvious he was a gentle man by nature. The aggression Tomiwa witnessed earlier was only borne out of frustration. Shade threw her face to the opposite direction, crossing her arms and pouting her lips. It was a gesture of someone who cared less. Tade knew that he had lost the battle and in an effort to salvage what was left of his ego, he ‘bounced off’ like someone who had everything under control.

“Tommy, can you imagine that? Is it by force to continue to date someone who persistently displayed very high level of immaturity? I told him I was no longer interested and he was throwing tantrums like a spoilt child!”

“Shade, if you asked me I would suggest that you handle this matter better than this. I think you should create time to talk things over with him. It doesn’t sound well breaking up with someone with a text message and not giving him any audience thereafter. And I think he really loves you” Tomiwa advised.

“I’ve heard you, Tommy. I have tried to explain to him but it's acts of immaturity like this that has not made it happen. He is just too immature for my liking and it is the main reason I broke up with him.” She explained.

“Well, just try to see him and hear him out. At least, clear your conscience that you did what you were supposed to do before breaking up with him.”

“Thank you, Tommy. I will do just that.”

They had barely finished talking when Tade came back again. “Shade, so you are not talking to me, abi?”

“Ohhhhh! Not again, Tade! Please can you let me have peace for once?!” With that, he ‘bounced off’ again.

“Tommy, you see what I was just saying?”

“Hmmm … but still, do as I advised. It will really help.”

After spending a long time talking, it eventually got to their turn to submit their forms. Shade and Tomiwa exchanged contacts and they parted ways. Tomiwa reflected over the little drama that happened between Shade and Tade. Although he didn’t have all the details, he was sure that Tade was as broken as he was and like him, Tade too, was trying to make things work but Shade’s heart was made up. Tade was going through exactly what he was going through. It was the way that he was going about it that lacked maturity. However, one bright side about theirs was that Shade ended the relationship without conjuring any conditions that put him neither here nor there.

By that time, Rachael too was through and she and Tomiwa sat down under a shed to have a tete-a-tete. Tomiwa asked Rachael about where they stood and she affirmed that nothing had changed—the suspension was still on. Tomiwa saw it as an opportunity to end it once and for all time.

“Okay … Rachael, it’s been three months already and I must confess these three months have been like three years of torture to me. Just look at me, I have become a shadow of myself. I have lost so much weight that when people see me they scream at how much I have emaciated. I hardly sleep or eat. My food and sleep have been pain and sorrow.” Rachael’s eyes were transfixed on him. He then stood up for Rachael to be able to assess him properly.

“Look at me …” He then made fun of himself, “Look at how big my head has become like someone that has signed a lifelong contract with kwashiorkor!” He had not completely lost his sense of humour after all. “But look at you … you are looking stunning, robust and beauty as ever, which proves to me that you are not being affected by all of these at all.”

“Hmmm!” Rachael heaved a sigh.

Tomiwa continued, “And if I heard you clearly, I don’t see this suspension ending any time soon and if it eventually ends it’s still a fifty-fifty chance for me. It’s not as if it’s certain that you are coming back to me. More so, you have already told me you don’t love me anymore.” He paused to allow Rachael absorb all he said. He continued, “See, Rachael, the whole essence of the decision we wanted to make was this: it was either we suffer the pains of heartbreak if we chose to end our wonderful relationship or risk the pains of having a child with sickle cell disorder. None of us was to experience both pains. But for me, I am already experiencing the pain of heartbreak and I don’t think I am ready to risk the pain of fathering an SS child again even if you want to continue with the relationship. I can’t experience both pains!”

Rachael’s heart skipped two beats. “So, what are you saying, Tommy?”

“I mean, I want to end this relationship. I am no longer interested. I can’t continue to live like this. Let me know I’m experiencing the pain of heartbreak, deal with it and move ahead, pure and simple. And I know it’s a matter of time before I get over it.”

“Tommy! But I explained that I don’t want this relationship to end like this. Tommy, why not let us give it more time? Is it that you have found another lady?”

“And wait for how long more? Two years? Six months? Even you cannot answer that! Wait indefinitely for a fifty-fifty outcome? What after all the waiting you still don’t want me? I don’t think I want to go through that phase of pain like I told you before. And to answer your question, no, I haven’t found another lady. You know me better than that. You know I can’t fall in love with anybody else when you are still somewhere in the picture.”

A part of her was happy to know that no one had taken her place in his heart yet.

“But what will people say, Tommy?”

“Don’t worry about that. When people ask questions, tell them I was the one who broke up with you. And I will corroborate the story whenever I am asked. That way, they don’t get to see you as the bad person. Let them put the blame on me. That will protect your reputation if that is what you are scared of.”

“It’s not that Tommy … I just don’t want it to end this way.”

“Well, I do.”

The discussion ended and they parted ways. After parting ways with Rachael, Tomiwa met Tade on his way out of the campus. Tade fumed with anger when he caught sight of Tomiwa. Tomiwa knew why. Tade saw him as the devil who snatched his girlfriend away from him; the architect behind his pains. Tomiwa smiled and called out to him as Tade passed him by, almost knocking him off with his shoulder.

“Hello, Tade.”

“Hi.” Tade answered reluctantly.

“Tade, I saw what happened back then. But bro, I don’t have anything to do with Shade if that’s what you are thinking. We were classmates way back and since then we had not seen each other until today.”

“Are you serious?”

“Yes!”

“Oh, I am sorry for my reaction towards you.”

“See, we are in the same ship. I am also going through what you are going through right now. So, I quite understand perfectly how you are feeling at the moment. I just finished talking with my fiancée—I don’t even know if I should still call her that anymore—and believe me she treats me way worse than Shade treated you back there.”

“Seriously?”

“Yeah. My lady is not even coming out plainly like Shade. She’s putting me in a position that is neither here nor there. But Tade, truth be told, you didn’t need all that drama back there. All you did was to make a fool of yourself. You need to be more patient next time. I expected you to have handled it more maturely instead of trying to create a scene that would have brought nothing but ridicule upon you.”

Tade saw sense in what Tomiwa said. They talked at length sharing and deriving strength from each other’s experience. Tomiwa, even in his deplorable state, could still encourage a fellow prisoner of love. At the end, Tade came to appreciate Tomiwa and the hatred he once had for him gave way to respect.

Meanwhile, Rachael was feeling dejected over the breakup. It was hard to say whether it was because of Tomiwa not being available as her plan B anymore or as a result of a real piece of affection hidden somewhere deep in a corner of her heart. Whichever way, something was sure: she felt seriously bad over Tomiwa’s decision to end the relationship.

On getting home, she dropped her handbag on the couch and went straight to her mother who was busy reading her Awake! Magazine as usual. Without greeting, she said, “Mummy, your Magic Boy has broken up with me ooo.”

“Hmmm … Is that so?”

“Yes mum, he did this afternoon.”

“And you blame him for that? I thought you were okay with him moving ahead with someone else.”

“Yes, I thought I was but …”

“What did you expect when you abandoned him in despair while you kept following that big-headed boy and paid deaf ears to all our warnings?”

“Mum, I didn’t know I still felt something for him. I guess one doesn’t appreciate what one has until one loses it.”

“Now you know that. So what do you want me to do now?”

“Mum, please talk to him for me. He likes and respects you a lot. He should give us some more time.”

“I will see what I can do about that.”

“Thank you, mummy.”

I wouldn't want Tommy to be with Shade. After all she's acting in a way just like Racheal, it wouldn't be fair to Tade either. So i want him to be with a new face. Racheal is a very selfish person. Keeping Tomiwa as plan B, damn that's wicked.
