Some people's minds are soooooooo small they cannot comprehend certain realities of life. I guess they are waiting for empirical evidence for them to phatom facts

To those who believe, no proof is necessary. To those who don't, no proof is acceptable. If you know, you know

Now that I know it's NLNG, I am tempted to believe. These organisations are extremely corrupt, and unbelievably corrupt corporate governance practices. They can allocate such huge salaries to themselves that are at variance with international industry best practices. It's corruption at play here, and it really sucks.

You made some very cerebral points in a number of your posts on this thread. However I'd like to clear certain of your misconceptions. I encourage you to view this with an open and unbiased mind.

First of all corruption and NLNG cannot be used in the same line. I'm not saying certain elements within that system aren't corrupt but they are a very miniscule minority. The first and most important value for the business is integrity and they DON'T joke with it. Sometime back during GEJ era their export Jetty was shut down. Why? Because Tompolo was demanding a bribe from the business under the guise of maritime whatever. With a daily target of export shipments that had to be met the company shutdown its operations rather than pay the bribe. That's a multi-million dollar business that could have easily given Tompolo the chicken change he was demanding. This is the same company that doesn't hesitate to terminate employment if there is as much as a proven age or qualification discrepancy in employee records.

In the business, one of the most feared departments is its corporate governance department. These guys do not hesitate to apply strict rules regarding their corporate governance.

To address your allegation that the recent graduates hired were untalented and highly connected people, I completely disagree with this. I know someone who has zero connections in his LG let alone to be regarded as highly connected who scaled all their rigorous screening to get an offer. When asked how he got in he attributes his success to God's favour and adequate preparation. And he says all his colleagues in one way or another had similar experiences. This person I know was on a 50k job in Ibadan. I don't know how a you can describe such persons as connected. Like someone said, If you are good, you are good.

Regarding the pay, I'm certain they aren't paying beyond international industry standard. You need to compare their pay with other Gas companies and you'd find out that its at par with gas industry standard.

The company is NOT a government company as people often wrongly assume. Yes NNPC owns shares there but they DO NOT own the company outright

I'm not going to dispute your claims even though I have serious reservations, but I'm only going to concentrate on the pay issue as highlighted, which is really the crux of the matter.

How can you claim that NLNG's pay is "at par" with international industry standard - which should it even be up to international standard in the first place? Ok, as far as gas companies go, none is bigger than Russia's Gazprom, and my cursory checks online show that the average JUNIOR MANAGER salaries PER ANNUM is $61k, and that's even for its UK operations, in Russia, it is $31k.

https://www.emolument.com/salary-reports/companies/gazprom/11553

But you earlier suggested that 'ordinary' entry level staff at NLNG earn about N1.6m a month, which is roughly $54k per annum! To put it in context, compare NLNG's annual revenues with Gazprom's annual revenues.

I'm adamant that something doesn't add up here, and unless you can show me proof of how NLNG salaries across board are commensurate with similar companies in same industry abroad, then I believe that these kinds of ridiculous and disproportionate salaries can only stem from a corrupt reward and compensation regime.

OK, let me first of all clarify that I am NOT holding brief for the company. I only want to correct certain generally held misconceptions (which I too used to believe until I became more knowledgeable about the industry)

While Gazprom is the behomoth in the Natural Gas business, there is a sub category of companies that manufacture Liquified Natural Gas. In this sub-category, the undisputed champion is Qatar Gas although they are facing pressure from Australia. Within African market producers include Algeria, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Angola and of course Nigeria. Liquefaction of NG is a more involved process and salaries in this sub category are higher than the general gas industry average.

Like you, I've done a cursory salary check in the LNG business. Please check out the links below to see salaries ranges

https://www.paysa.com/salaries/qatargas
(salaries range from USD93k-162k with average of 118k)

https://www.paysa.com/salaries/nigeria-lng-limited
(USD100K-169k with average of 124k) differs from Qatar by only 7k which I believe is attributable to the very remote nature of Bonny.

https://www.payscale.com/research/US/Employer=Atlantic_Lng/Salary
Atlantic LNG is located in Trinidad and Tobago. Average salary here is 122k which isn't far of from what Qatar Gas and NLNG offers

https://www.paysa.com/salaries/angola-lng
(74k-134k) small one train plant

https://www.comparably.com/companies/equatorial-guinea-lng-holdings/salaries
Average salary is 145k! Critical to note that the Marketing Associate which is one step above grad trainee is paid 60k annually.

The range of salaries above I believe does not cover top C-level executives.

Like I said before, I believe NLNG's pay is at par with global standards in the LNG business

Bros you have done well.

All your posts are on point.

Regarding that NLNG and its recruitment I can state categorically that while there may be a few cases of impropriety in the proces this will be very few and far apart.

I will state three cases here.

A young man working with the company who moved through the recruitment process (which lasted the better of one year)did not know anyone there. He had been wallowing in a teaching job in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State for many years. A first class Engineering product from one of the foremost public universities was recruited without any mago-mago whatsoever. His contract is still one of the most impresive ones I have ever seen. And I have seen a great many ofeers in my time.

A second person was recruited to join their maritime operations. he has been in the Merchant navy for a number of years. Recruited from Lisbon, he was brought into that job strictly on merit.

Thirdly I will have you know that just like any other serious minded company the LNG has a very knowledgeable HR unit that is charged with recruiting the very best hands for the available openings. They do this in concert with a number of recruiting firms and sometimes some headhunting companies. There is absolutely no year that the HR team does not go on a recruitment drive in Europe and America seeking the very best Nigerian students who they attempt to convince to come home to join their team.

Personally, I am of the view that the man know man phenomenon is over rated especially in the specialized industry in contrast to the public service.

Chief, a question - top Nigerian students finish for naija? Why would they go abroad to search for and convince the very best Nigerian students, who already have fantastic jobs abroad, to come and join them? What about the ones there in Nigeria? Are they not indirectly exporting our jobs to those countries to which they go and search for Naija students? If the naija students quit the abroad jobs, the jobs will likely to a non-Nigerian. Now, those Nigerians who quit will return to Nigeria to take these NLG jobs. Ultimately, the space to recruit local-based Nigerians reduces by these new hires..This is indirect job exporting now...

Anyway, let me hear your reason as to why they can't recruit the best Nigerians there in Nigeria

They regularly recruit from the local pool of excellent grads. Perhaps only for very highly specialised roles do they have to headhunt as stated. But most of the staff are Nigeria trained Nigerians. U just have to be supremely good

@Hedonini I expected a response from you regarding our "conversation" about the international standard of Nigeria LNG pay structure.

As for Gamesmart, keep insulting. Some will believe, some won't, So what?

The truth is that experience over the years has proven to (only to some extent though) that our educational system does no justice to preparing the graduate for the work life. If you have any experience with HR processes especially as it regards the recruitment of fresh graduates you will only shake your head in dismay. For the majority of cases many serious companies spend a lot of resources just to bring the very best candidates up to steam with their expectations through a very robust training session.

Some of us who are old enough may still remember that in the eighties and nineties SPDC used to have a graduate intensive programme for fresh hires. seek out any of the graduands of that programme and it will clarify the position held by many HR practitioners that are universities are mass producing graduates without any emphasis on quality.

I recall that after the programme SPDC will only take the very best products of that programme but guess what almost all the others had offers from companies in the same sector. As a matter of fact I do know someone who participated in the programme and eventually joined a major Oil servicing company and he still works there till date as a very senior Operations manager.

Almost all the banks have robust training departments that rely on both in-house and external resources to bring new and existing hirelings up to steam.

But I must say that some of these training efforts are beginning to yield results. The private universities are also adding more value to graduates. So you will find out that less efforts and resources are being expended in recruiting foreign trained generalists at this point. But do understand that companies will not hesitate to recruit at whatever reasonable budget a specialist whose experience will add value and improve the bottom line ultimately.

A case in point deserves mention here. There is a company in Nigeria that has been searching for a befitting CFO for over two years now. All manners of candidates have applied and none has yet been satisfactory. Mind you the reward is quite reasonable; 50,000,000.00 per annum if they can just get the right match. At the moment they have a Pakistani guy who comes in one week a month to oversee a team of 13 guys.

The entire labour market is replete with these kind of specialized openings and what HR companies do especially those with large budgets is to create a database of potential candidates for very specialized roles and track them consistently just in case the need arises for therm in the immediate or remote future. One of the leading telecoms companies and a foremost FMCG manufacturing company have special head hunting specialists/units for this kind of exercise.

Corporate giants are very good at mitigating those risks. You basically sign over your rights in the form of an NDA.

CodeTemplar:
Yes there are people who carry this much potential. Do you drink Milo ( popular cocoa beverage instant drink ) ?
If you do next time look at the sachet well there is a special malt formula called "Protomalt" that is largely responsible for the unique properties of Milo and this formulae is worth billions of dollars to them because it virtually controls their market share and revenue from Milo.
Now if you, Hedonini happen to be biochemist researcher and you come up with a formula as good as that of the Milo's Protomalt, will you attempt to go into cocoa beverage production as a solopreneuer with next to no capital and market brand reputation OR you will take a 10 million usd per month contract job with Cadbury (Nestle Milo's Rival ) for the next 5 years ? Will you be tempted to even think about this kind of opportunity if it presents itself to you?

Please be honest in your answers.

Hmmmmmmmm let's shelve all of this and just agree to disagree.

Onnyx, lemme just clarify that from my findings though they don't recruit that often. Not within the country or foreign trained Nigerians.

Staff attrition rate is extremely low, so as my contact put it "there's really no vacancy to fill"

Many thanks, wonderful response. Especially the last paragraph, insightful..But really, with all the people we have, a company still can't fill a role with such big salary they are offering?? There're so many ACCA, ACA, CFA, ABC, DCF aaa,lol in Nigeria, so many. Some with solid work experience. Are we saying they are not good enough? Or is it that this company is not publicizing the vacancy well enough? 125K dollars in Nigeria is an outstanding salary...And anywhere in the world, it's a really good salary. In the US, it puts people in the top 10% earners..

I'm really surprised oo. That kind big offer, yet no one to fill the role.

Anyway, at the previous paragraphs, mhen, so other players were scrambling to hire those who didn't make it at SPDC? Definitely, that does not happen again..Too many candidates these days, employers have their pick.

It's good to know those private universities are doing something good. The general "wrong" consensus among many is that their standards are lower than those of government universities. They will tell you 3rd class from government universities is first class at private universities. LOLLLL. They are jokers. Jokarias

My pastor earns close to 800k works with imf

800K dollars salary? No one at IMF earns 800K dollars, not even Largarde. I know all their salaries grin.

Or do you mean IMF office in Nigeria and your pastor earns 800K naira per month? If yes, then that is very, very possible.

Do you mean that he works as a local staff of International Monetary Fund (IMF)?

If this is the case then its rather low but then again I don't know what role he plays there.

He could be a Pastor, leading a congregation but he could be a 'man friday' in his secular activity.

Perhaps he works in the Nigerian office and he is not at a too high level. Local salaries are different from the salaries they pay in DC, but the benefits are the same..75% of tuition fees covered for staff children.

I have two friends working for the world bank. One there in Africa, the other in DC. The one in DC gets a package of 111K Dollars per year. The other one gets 16 million Naira equivalent per year. Same organizations, but different locations.
