Nkita is the igbo name for dog and ekuke is actually eke uke. In the olden dayz there is a big market in a kingdom I won't mention their name. Where hunting tools are sold..most especially hunting dogs.... That was where the name eke uke... Became popular. The market still exists till now. They sell dogs there...

I can bet the market is in calabar

They are originally from Asian, stroll down to Africa, people underrate them because they are not aboriginal Caucasian, Asians and African have same small stature, and so our dogs. Thank you

rubbish where did Tibetan Mastiff come from, Tosa Inu and many others. Asians generally have small stature not Africans.

The real and professional name is Basenji. Google it. It plays no shepherd roles. Its origin is North Africa. Thank me later.

go back to Google because basenjis don't bark but our local dogs do.

Ekukes could be seen on the tombs of Pharohs.
They are called Basenji and are priced for thier intelligeince, silence, speed and courage. They also tend to emotionaly attached to a single being

those dogs on Egyptian tombs are not basenjis and besides basenjis are among the least intelligent dogs in the world. very dull

there is nothing in the write up that says Basenjis don't bark at all. it just mentions that it's an unusual yodel-like sound.

One theory holds that the latter trait is the result of selecting against dogs that frequently bark—in the traditional Central African context—because barking could lead enemies to humans' forest encampments. While dogs that resemble the Basenji in some respects are commonplace over much of Africa, the breed's original foundation stock came from the old growth forest regions of the Congo Basin, where its structure and type were fixed by adaptation to its habitat, as well as use (primarily net hunting in extremely dense old-growth forest vegetation)

so uncle from the wrote up the basenji is the closest description you can get for our local dogs

you haven't read enough about the basenji when you do you will know that they don't bark and only look similar to our local dogs but are not. they are called mongrels for a reason basenji is a distinct breed.

I don't care about what anyone thinks about this dog breed, I love them.

When I was a little girl I lived with grandma, we had one and I loved her so much like a sister (or brother, I don't really know the sex)despite the fact that she eats poo like someone mentioned.
I shared my food with her, played with her. She followed me everywhere. Then one day grandma decided to sell her, I protested, but one day, the buyer came. An auntie took me to her house and when I returned the dog was gone : embarassed .
I wept for days and couldn't eat well because each time I'm about to eat, I'll remember her.

Fast forward to present day, I bought one month's ago for my son that had been troubling me that he wanted a puppy. No time now for English dog their wahala too much.My kids named her April. They named her after a cartoon character in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles grin. She was also born in the month of April and we all love her very much and she loves us too (except visitors smiley).

You are the closest to the fact of the matter as far as I can tell.
Basenjis don't bark, they have curled tails, and they are a distinct breed.
Years of mix breeding probably brought about the popular dog in this our locality (I referred to as NSD)

What many fail to consider is that dogs can be breed deliberately by crossing and mix breeding. Maybe that's how we got the NSD. Just like the Whippet is from the greyhound line,...

Articles like this (see link below) explains it to those who care to understand. The breeds mentioned are the author's opinion. The link was posted earlier by someone and someone else mentioned the Whippet also.

I am not talking about the local breed, I am talking about dogs in general.

I look forward to seeing comments like "Nice guard dog but they still eat sh*t." when someone opens a thread like "rate my rottweiler" OR "rate my caucasian.
