We are not here to get taught on governance or criticism or lack thereof. No one neglected the asian woman that racked up that enormous bill, it is totally wrong and one of the reasons the visa officers get skeptical. And yes it is not our business what Canadians decide upon, but in this point in time, jus soli is legal in Canada so whether the people living in Canada are happy or not about it then let them change the constitution accordingly and obviously this will not be a topic of discussion if that happens. But until then. Another point here the poster or couple of posts prior visa adjudication is subjective, and this particular officer showed that exactly that he is not one of the people that like jus soli. As @mslala said, one officer might refuse you visa and with the same documentations, another officer will grant you the same class of visa. They have absolute power to exercise.

P.S. The rejection that you mentioned there is standard because the officer knows he cannot state that this person wants to give birth in Canada so I will not give them visa, then trust me that officer will be put on audit and possibly suspension because it is not against the Canadian law. SO its a normal template that they will have to give reason for a refusal according to the law and they hide behind the financial and asset things. I can tell you that I know of a serious rich man, with over 20 properties that each property is worth at least 200,000 US dollars and other assets that can amount to no less than 2,000,000 US Dollar and he has a business that turns over easily 200-300k USD on average each month and this individual has extensive travel history that use to travel every other week but has since stopped because of age. And guess what, he was refused Canada visa twice.

maternal:

She got rejected for "financial assets, purpose of travel etc". Nobody knows her true financial situation but herself and the visa officer. Furthermore, this woman is clearly telling her side of the story. Last I know being rejected for financial reason is part of the law. Just because you feel she got discriminated doesn't mean she did, nor does it make your feelings factual. But I like how everyone is ignoring the Asian woman who racked up over 300k in hospital bill. Maybe Canada now wants people to have extra money in case the pregnancy doesn't go accordingly ? But like I said, it's not ones business to decide or try to figure out what the Canadian people want to do or agree upon. Nigerians like to criticize other peoples government, but won't open their mouths and stand up to theirs at home most of the time. Even if it is discrimination, what will you do ? You'll still stand in line to get visa tomorrow.

As they say, there's both side of the story then the truth. You're only hearing this woman's narrative/side of the story. I'm sure if the officer came on this board, his side of the story would be different. The fact people assume she's automatically telling the truth because she's a regular here is comical. How many Nigerians who met requirements to get a visa, got one, and never returned ? Do you know about the crisis with Nigerians happening at the Canadian border now ? The visa officer has to take everything into account, even if you meet all requirements on paper. And I'm sure the federal government has told visa officers to reduce the visa's given out to Nigerians. They even begged the trump administration to do the same, with Nigerians now claiming refugee in Canada left and right coming from the U.S. But I have to repeat, whether it's right, legal, etc to do so in Canada, it's nobody's business but Canadian citizens. If Canadians aren't complaining, which they are not, nothing will happen. Everyone in naija can bone their face all they want. Foreign governments don't respect Nigerians, because at the end of the day, their government doesn't either. But lastly, she can easily appeal, and if he did do something wrong, it will be found without a doubt. Canada is not a banana republic and laws are followed/enforced. If the visa officer is bias/corrupted, it will inevitably be found in an investigation. Though it'll take a while as the investigation would be lengthy.

My 2 cents

@maternal, I'm not a regular here and the post sharing my experience was my first post ever on Nairaland. There are always three sides to a story but I have nothing to gain from lying.

Like I said the interview was good for me and gave me closure so I have moved on and have no interest whatsoever in appealing. Luckily I have a valid U.S visa so I'll have my baby in U.S.

But I think it is insincere to insist on full disclosure regarding having your baby in Canada and then meet such prejudice. At least, U.S visa application process is not this prejudiced, and actually recognizes /permits birth tourism in their visa application process.

Please anyone who has disclosed childbirth solely (without any medical/health issue) as the reason for the visa application and received an approval should please share their experience.

Thank you @Mslala I think I will move on together with you because clearly it seems maternal thinks we are being biased or ignorant with his own views and 'facts' that he is telling us.

By the way @Mslala there are a few people here that have posted there experiences that have successfully gotten a visa even after stating childbirth as their purpose. I'm not sure what page, but if you have the time, you could go through again the thread and you will find it.

I decided on Canada because I got the U.S visa for vacation in March and found out I was pregnant at the end of June and based on recent stories/trend from the thread on giving birth in U.S, using it for birthing purpose without first travelling for vacation might pose a problem during renewal. So I decided let me try Canada and disclose upfront.

Anyways, I'm heading back to U.S, I will send the notification of change of intent.
Challenge that if u can and still go to the States. You need to clear ways for others who could be subjected to that personal bias. Anyway, I hope sb does challenge that dude.

Its better to state that you want to give birth than risk being turned away at POE. They are getting more vigilant at the POE nowadays.

However, when applying make sure you back up your application with tons of evidence (FINANCIAL being most important in this case; no amount is too large for this endeavor as complications (touch wood) may arise and in that case bill can run into hundreds of thousands of dollars), if you have contacted hospitals, include those correspondences, reasons that will compel you to return to Naija after the birth (letter from work, work experiences / career prospects, spouse, social connections).

And of course make sure you include a detailed letter with spreadsheet for the financials you will undertake not least about dates of prospective appointments, their costs, accommodation costs, average food costs per day, transportation etc. You cannot be detailed enough especially when the odds are against and the onus is on us especially for giving birth.

Hello Ladies I recently had my baby in Calgary, Canada. Before I applied I read nairaland from pg 1 to 20 plus then. Pls let's read the ALL the pages before asking any question.

At the point of Entry the officer just asked my why am in canada, I said Visiting. He asked who?, what I do for a living & other random questions that has nothing to do with my pregnancy, don't think I spent more than 1 minute him.

My bill for Vaginal Delivery

Admittance fee 838,
Hosp fee daily 3673 (For 24 hrs)
Baby's Hosp bill 1080
Obstetrician fee 500
Paediatrician fee 250
Total CAD$6,341

Other Expenses
Birth Certificate long 60
Birth Certificate short 41
Passport photo 25.2
Canadian Passport 107
Nigerian Travel Doc 100
Post to Nig. Embassy to & Fro 40
My baby's KLM ticket 243.5

Please Note: If they had asked me if I was pregnant at the Point of entry I would have said YES. There is no point lieing when u r obviously pregnant. If u r lucky u can meet a good officer.

This bill does not include seeing doc before & after delivery. I posted my bill to give a guideline, bills varies from the city u give birth, the doctor, type of delivery and also if there is complication.

I want to use this opportunity to thank Hotstepper for her assistance when applying for baby's Nigeria document. I wld HV applied for Nigerian Visa or passport for baby BT she explained to me that its not necessary. I should just apply for Emergency Travel Certificate for baby which is cheaper & faster.

If you need further information I will try my best to answer. Goodluck!

Nadnad:
I came in last weekend , applied for my visa when I was already pregnant didn’t indicate childbirth because I wanted to go to the US.
But I changed my mind along the line and when I come in I declared at POE that I was here for childbirth. I was take to secondary inspection. They counted my cash and filled a form online for me and gave me a paper that will allow me stay for 6months and stamped my passport in for 6months as well.
They thanked me for my honesty and that was it.

I am using Doctor Ingras Kulach fit her details from here and they are only affiliated to Peter Lougheed hospital.
Calgary is abit in the high side though

So far Doctors fees is cad 3000
Hospital gave 3863 for mother and 2068 for baby per day! I have not gone to the hospital and I don’t intend to go till am ready to deliver.

I have only paid doctors fees and it includes all visits before nd after birth.
All my test and scan from Nigeria we accepted.

Yes, hospitals are funded by the govt but is that not why international patients pay for their own services themselves? Because its funded by the govt, thats why the govt stopped issuing Health Card to kids born by international patients at birth so they wont take advantage of those system until hey r old enough to live in the contry nd actually pay tax.

I was discussing with my friend who is a PR holder in Canada this weekend and she said she just learnt that the Canadian Government pays its citizens that are children $650 CAD monthly and that she was told of a Nigerian Lady (who gave birth to triplet and returned to Nigeria) that receives $1950 CAD monthly for her triplets from the Canadian Government. My friend confirmed that the Canadian Government pays her son who is not a Canadian citizen some money every month.

@Hotstepper, please is this accurate i.e. that Canadian Government pays its citizens that are children certain sums every month? Because this could be one of the immediate benefits that the VO was frowning at and referring to as an abuse of the system.

Thanks.

It's true. Money is given to your child along with many other benefits. But I think the mother or parent(s) now has to be living in Canada. I doubt they'd be sending her dollars while in naija. I think they've changed that rule. As for the son, unless he's at least a PR and living in Canada, I can't see the gov't giving him money. Why would they ?

I know of 2 different parents with PRs that went back to Naija with their kids but where still getting paid child benefit into a bank account in Canada. However, audit picked both family's ilegal runs. The goverment could easily tell when the kids or parents were no longer in Canada. Both families were mandated to refund the money with interest on their return to Canada.

I think its 500 or 550 per child for PRs and citizens. The parents i believe will need to have a SIN and be PRs or international students that have spent a year in Canada before they can receive child benefits for their kid(s). I do not believe the triplet story except the mum or dad is a permanent resident. If one of the parents is a PR, and they are currently living in Nigeria, the goverment would eventually find out and the money would be refunded with interest. It is similar to owing tax after filing a tax return.

Every month, the govt pays the parents of kids 18 yrs nd under what is called Child Benefit for the kids. Now, this amount each family gets depends on family income which is determined once u file for your mandatory yearly income tax. The lower the family income, the more you get which wont exceed 650 per child. Also, the age of the kids also depends how much each child will get as the younger the child is, the more his or her need. for example, new borns nd toddlers ...once the child turn 6, it reduces a bit. infact as of 5 yrs ago, they stopped at 6 but new govt came nd said let them continue till 18. Now what u use the money is up to the person and the money is paid to mothers or the primary care taker of the kids .

For the child to recieve it, one of the parents must reside in Canada as a refugee, PRa or permenent. If ypu are outaide the country nd they find out which thwy usually do for more than a period of time , u will have to pay bk what u recieved.

Aha this maybe what's fueling refugee . If ppl get benefits whilst claiming asylum. Hmm.
A number of PR have moved back though I hope they know this clause and don't get themselves in trouble.
Those who moved back came because their lot was better in Nigeria so they are waiting for better work opportunities
