I'd keep on telling Nigerians how useless the man called buhari is, and why he isn't fit to occupy his current office or any political office at all.

buhari signed an executive order tagged VOARS(voluntary offshore assets regularization scheme) with the view to checking money laundering. Under this law, Nigerian tax payers are expected to voluntarily declare all offshore assets and incomes earned to the federal government. This normally should have been a bright idea in fighting corruption but as usual, the dull thing had to spoil it by insisting that holders of such offshore assets would be mandated to pay taxes on those assets.

Now, there are Nigerians who live and work both in Nigeria and outside Nigeria. Most of these people are business men. So when they hold assets in Nigeria, they are mandated to pay taxes to the government. This isn't a problem. Where there is a problem, is asking them to pay taxes on offshore assets that are already being heavily taxed by foreign governments of those countries thereby, leading to multiple taxation. How on earth do you want to collect taxes for assets that are not under your control and jurisdiction? What benefits would accrue to the holders of these assets "if" they pay these taxes? Would the government be providing security for these assets or providing infrastructures that would improve and enhance the value of these assets? If there are no visible benefits the holders of these assets are getting, what then is the need to tax them? This is just a blatant attempt to take advantage of the citizens while offering them nothing in return. This executive order is totally unacceptable and should not be allowed to stand without modifications. I am in support of declaring all assets but taxing them is tantamount to committing armed robbery.

Do u have a business abroad??....does this order affect u in any way. Do u even have d capacity to set up a business here not to talk of offshore. U DT doesn't have a penny will wail more than those tht d order affects

Have u asked urself if other countries, western countries do d same??...let those who it affects speak for themselves, what u should be concerned is his it affects u, does it affect u positively or negatively. I don't see how this order affects d common man negatively

This Buhari govt is a big joker . Even the USA govt is finding it very hard to crack down Tax invaders particularly those that hide their assets in the Middle East, Eastern Europe , Asia & Africa . Ordinary Tax collected in Nigeria, govt can’t give a proper account of what they’ve spend the money on ; well this is just another senseless law from this govt.

mumu talk. keep making a fool of yourself.

the law is targeted at getting money from Nigerians that are rich so the money can be used to repair roads and build public hospitals and schools that the poor and average people like you and I will benefit from more but you are still complaining.

your education is a waste!!!

Stop embarrassing yourself, young man.
Which you and who? Count yourself in not me. The royalties that they get from oil companies, they've not used it to build schools for you that's "poor", you're talking about an unrealistic venture that would not work.
I repeat again. What is the rationale of paying a tax to Nigeria when your business or you don't have the protection or influence of your country?
So you mean I would pay 35% tax on money I made abroad because of what?
Remember this post. I say remember it! You would see everything crumble like a pack of card.

The order targets Nigerian tax payers.

If you are a Nigerian residing abroad and does not pay tax in Nigeria, by definition this executive order does not affect you.

I don’t see it as violating the sovereign right of any country...this policy is even limited compare to what other countries do...e.g. if you are a US citizen, you are required to file for taxes regardless of your country of residency or dual citizenship. Also, if you reside in the US, you must declare all foreign incomes when you file your US taxes.

As a US Citizen, National, Permanent Resident (living in the US or abroad) or resident you are only reliefs of filing for taxes of incomes earned locally or abroad if:

1. You are dead.
2. Earn below specified minimum income level for your tax category.
3. You renounce US citizenship.

Even, Illegal US Residents, who are working illegally and earning income either under the table or otherwise are legally obligated to pay taxes.

How 9ja go take better when hatred don blind our judgement? Nigeria can't move forward with such mentality of ours.

Instead of us analysing it possibility and legality critically we jump in to condemn the scheme. Advanced countries have such laws in place.

Some persons did not even read the content before commenting to condemn Buhari to know whether or not it is beneficial to the country. No wonder a scholar once said, the illiterate of the 21st century is not one who can not read nor write but one who can not learn, relearn and unlearn.

Is Nigeria an advance country? Anybody using this stupid line is an idiot. Suddenly, you a remember US. Will US leave someone like Leah Shuabu in captivity? U want to copy US when you can't even do 1/4 of what they do for their citizens.

of the money will be used well then it's a good thing!!!

he's trying to take from the rich to better the lives of the poor!!!

Reading is one thing understanding is anoda thing... Im now certain U ppl have mucus in ur heads for brains... If U cannot read and cannot understand, don't go about exposing how dumb U are... Here's wat d UK legislation says...

On December 11, the Government published draft legislation outlining new taxes and charges which will have to be paid by offshore companies which own property in the UK. Although a consultation document on the topic was issued in May, there have been some significant changes since then – and property owners should start to plan accordingly before the laws come into force.
The main features of the proposed legislation will affect properties which are valued at more than £2 million and which are owned by “non-natural persons”. (This is a reference to foreign companies, partnerships, funds and the like, not to persons with strange personal habits.)
Previously many foreign buyers of UK property have chosen to register their properties in the name of an offshore company in order to eradicate UK inheritance tax (IHT), which would otherwise be charged at 40 per cent on the whole value of the property, after allowances, upon the death of the owner. Offshore company ownership also facilitated the avoidance of stamp duty (SDLT), as any subsequent sale of the property could be affected by a transfer of the shares in the company, leaving the title to the property in the UK unaltered.
But all that is about to change. Offshore companies which own property worth over £2 million will now be faced with:
1. An annual charge of a minimum of £15,000 and a maximum of £140,000 depending on value. The new tax is called Annual Residential Property Tax (ARPT)

Which part of dis document says d UK taxes it's citizens for foreign properties abeg?? D document simply says d UK will now tax OFFSHORE COMAPNIES who own PROPERTIES IN THE UK!!!! not in their countries

I am really disappointed with the QUALITY of the Nigerian educational system, going by the comments of young Nigerians on this thread.
Who did we offend, that has caused our Youths with gleeful ignorance?

Just read the way they're abusing their President, on something they themselves are completely clueless about?
Instead of asking questions and learning, these doffus are quick and eager to showcase their ignorance and stupidity.
All of you on the first page of this thread are a disgrace to your names and whatever school you attended.

FYI, many countries, including America, Ireland, Mexico, Canada, Denmark, Greece, U.K, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, North Korea, Australia, Argentian, Algeria, China, and many, many African countries, including Cameroun, Chad, Congo, CAR, Burundi, Burkina Faso, Cape verde, benin, Egyot, Ethiopia, e.t.c

Infact, collecting taxes on foreign assets of citizens is the NORM and not doing so, is an isolation.

Only Eritrea and the USA tax foreign income of its citizens living outside their country but almost ALL countries, with Nigeria just joining, tax the foreign income of their 'resident citizens'.

What you dunces need to investigate and seek clarity about is how the Govt will make allowance for Assets on which tax have already been paid in the foreign location that they are situated or where such income was earned so that the owner now pay a reduced tax at home, here in Nigeria, to mitigate against double taxation.

Well, most of you shouting here dont even have any local asset, talk-less of foreign assets, so how this matter take concern una sef, dey baffle me. grin grin

Meanwhile, Buhari should not try to reap where he had not sowed because Nigerians, unlike their foreign counterpart say in America, dont enjoy any benefit from the Nigerian govt, they have to provide their own water through borehole, electricity through fuel Generators and Inverters, No standard hospitals, poor transportation, bad roads, e.t.c.
Whatever these people have managed to gather (apart from thieves and treasury looters like Saraki, Atiku, Olisah metuh, Oshiomole, including Our Ex-generals like Abacha, IBB, OBJ, Abdusalam, e.t.c) was done by sheer self-sacrifice.

Very daft move though...Because i will never understand the rationale behind taxing ur citizens abroad when u don't listen,or do nothing for...I'm sure he doesn't even know what he has done...

Even countries where the citizens raise their heads up high in the midst of nations aren't taxed on foreign assets...The irony is they will gladly pay if asked as ridiculous as it may come but they trust, and believe in the system...Abuse of office in most countries in Europe is lengthy jail time no fines except restitution and lifeban from public office.
