Baba Centino, thanks for the update.. I really appreciate the fact that you are trying to make the story as current and relatable as possible.. But to me it's beginning to feel like you are focused more on the political dialogue (which will always be subjective) than the story itself. Like the last episode for instance where the only major event was at the hospital. So I could have just skipped the other parts and read only the last two paragraphs, and I won't miss anything important..

Pardon my epistle, I hope you get my drift.

It's okay to skip the boring part to the part that interests you my guy. Hopefully, you don't need to do that every week wink

A NEW NEIGHBOUR

Ndifreke rode back with Irikefe and Castro and met the men where they had left them. No one seemed to be in a hurry to leave the gathering. It was Saturday after all and there was so much going on.

Irikefe’s walked straight into their midst still holding his jaw. Whatever hit him did hit him hard as his face appeared to be askew.

“Bia, what happened to you?” Achike said.

“Akunna. That mad man hit me and removed my tooth.”

“Ntoiii.”

“We have to call those psychiatric hospital people to come and remove him from here.”

“We are not calling any psychiatric hospital people. Shebi you said he was all right. That he should stay here and kill his mother. You were jumping up and down and enjoying his wrestling. I don’t know why he left any teeth in your mouth.”

Irikefe opened his mouth to speak, but Ndifreke tugged at his shirt urging him to stay quiet. He did.

“Efe” Mr Zubi said. “It is good that you have now realized what the rest of us had already seen. Now draw your own ears. Our people say ashes fly back in the face of those that blow them. Stay away from Akunna.”

Irikefe still smarting from Achike's comments said, “I have good news for you Mr Achike.”

Everyone looked up.

“Nurse Josephine is coming back. So there is still hope for you,” he said and retreated.

“Papa Efe. Warn your son. If I have not been in this compound since he was born I would have blamed you for his upbringing. But still, warn him, because what Akunna did to him is small compared to what I will do.”

Papa Efe who was tapping his feet on the floor and shaking his head looked up sharply. Irikefe maintained a safe distance from his father.

“Is the nurse really coming back?” Lukman said.

“Ask them.”

“Yes she is coming back," Ndifreke said.

“Is that a good thing?”

“She is a tenant here. Her rent has not expired.”

“Is she not ashamed?”

“You worry about yourself.”

As they spoke, the Landlord’s four-wheel drive came to a halt on the other side of the gutter. His driver Suraju ejected himself from his seat, spun over to the other side, and opened the door of the back seat for Alhaji Sirika. Someone immediately remarked that his Agbada looked like the exact one Governor Ganduje converted to a safe for his $5million dollar kickback. Two other men alighted from the red jeep.

“Welcome Alhaji,” they said in unison. Lukman and Josiah prostrated. Alhaji Sirika nodded and searched the faces. He put his two hands under his agbada and adjusted it with a twirl of the shoulders. Papa Efe rushed forward and extended his two hands and bowed. Alhaji Sirika shook his hands and said "What have you people been up to in this compound?”

“Everything is okay Alhaji,” Papa Efe said.

“Alright. I have good news. I have brought a new tenant.” Alhaji Sirika then waved a hand and one of the two men who accompanied him stepped forward. He was middle-aged, the height of Chiwetalu Agu and dark like coal tar. He had scars from stitches running from his lower lip down to his adam’s apple. Curiously, however, when he smiled his teeth were as white as snow and he even had dimples that immediately brightened his mien.

“This is my new tenant. He is from Togo. His name is…err, what is that you name again?”

“Agbonyibo” he said, with a voice as soft as a eunuch’s.

“Agbon-wetin?” Papa Efe said.

“Agbonyibo. Na Togo name.”

“Where will he live Alhaji? There is no vacancy now,” Mr Zubi said, desperate to avoid Agbonyibo’s smiling face.

“He will occupy that murderer Talabi’s room and shop. This is a proper tenant. He paid two years for both the room and shop.” With a huge grin, he looked at Achike and said “Omo Ibo. You know that is the kind of tenant I want in my house.”

“But Talabi’s things are still here,” Mr Zubi said.

“Well, not for long.” Turning to Suraju and the second man he said: “Oya, break the doors and throw his things out.”

“But Alhaji. That is not right.”

“Did you people not say he was sleeping with a man’s wife and attempted to kill his mother-in-law and ended up killing innocent children and his lover? The hangman in Kirikiri is waiting for him. His things are all for sale. He owed me two years rent.”

Sujaru went to the boot of the four-wheel drive and pulled out two crowbars and hammers and handed a pair to his companion and they went first to Talabi’s room.

“Mr Agbonyibo. What will you sell in the shop? What do you do for a living?” Mr Zubi asked.

“Abeg sir, he began with the small voice, "Make you no call me Mr because I no get money. Na Agbonyibo only I want make everybody call me.”

Alhaji Sirika gave off a full belly laughter and said “He is a humble man. Oya, tell them what you do.”

“I dey train animal.”

“Animal?”

“Yes I dey train dog and other animal.”

“Is that what you want to do here?”

“Yes sir.”

“In this residential compound?”

“Na for my shop I go dey train dem. I no go carry dem enter house.”

“But the shops are in front of the compound! We have children here.”

“Erm, Zubi calm down,” Papa Efe said. Which kind animals you are training?”

“I have dog and monkey.”

“What?”

“Sometimes I dey get tortoise and crocodile.”

“Jerusalem the land of mercy!” Achike cried. “Croco-gini?”

“Na pikin crocodile. I dey sell am before he start to lay egg.”

“You keep crocodiles in a shop?”

“E get special drum I dey put am. No worry sir. Nobody go know say dat kind tin dey this compound.”

Mr Zubi turned to Alhaji Sirika and said “Alhaji. This is not acceptable.”

“In my house? Azubuike! In my house I built with my money?!”

“Alahji, in my village we dey forbid monkey” Mkpoikanna said.

“Who is this one?” Alhaji Sirika said, looking at Mkpoikanna like a leper offering a handshake.

“Suraju!” Have you not finished breaking the door?”

“I dey come Alhaji!” Suraju answered from the corridor and then surfaced holding one side of a cane sofa. His companion had the other side and they plumped it down on the frontage. They had already arranged his cooking utensils and other sundry items on it. They rushed back inside and brought out all of Talabi’s meager belongings; among which was a sack full of pornographic materials: DVDs and old Playboy magazines. Alhaji Sirika rummaged through everything and then said, “How will he not be sleeping with somebody’s wife when his most prized possessions are blue films.”

Everyone else was concerned about Agbonyibo, who stood back with the smile not leaving his face as Alhaji Sirika and his goons threw Talabi’s things around.

“Look at his eyes,” Achike said. “He looks like a crocodile. How can we allow this to happen?”

“Alhaji Sirika has collected his money. That is all that matters to him. Now we have to live with this creature.”

“Nothing good ever comes out of Togo. Emmanuel Adebayo said they have very bad juju. That is what his family used on him that made him to stop scoring goals for Manchester City when he would not give them money.”

“Where was he living before? We need to know and find out why he is leaving.”

“I suspect his crocodile swallowed somebody’s child and they chased him away. Alhaji Sirika only cares about money.”

“What sort of problem is this biko? Who buys crocodiles?”

“They use it for pepper soup in Togo. I’m am sure that all the Togolese people that walk barefoot in this Lagos and selling pito and akamu that they put garlic inside will be coming here to buy crocodile to go and cook soup.”

“God forbid bad thing.”

“You better be ready.”

“Was Wasiu who was selling igbo not better than this?”

“How about the dangers of having those kinds of animals around?”

“There is also dog and tortoise according to him.”

“You see what Buhari is causing in this country? Before he came Togo people were far away,” Mkpoikanna said.

Alhaji Sirika’s men now had all of Talabi’s personal belongings out on the frontage and moved over to break the shop open. Thirty minutes later, Talabi’s two sewing machines, two stools, a bench, a cutting table, and an ironing board were also out in the open.

“Papa Efe, arrange for a truck to pack these things and take to the Baale’s house. I have already discussed it with him.”

“Okay sir!” Papa Efe said.

“Get a carpenter and change the locks immediately. Agbonyibo will come for the keys in the evening.”

“Okay sir.”

Then Alhaji Sirika turned to Agbonyibo and said, “The room and the shop are yours. Come for the keys in the evening.”

“Thank you sir,” he said and prostrated.

“Agbon-agbon. Agbon-yanky. Agbon-fineboy!” Alhaji Sirika teased and ballooned out his agbada and made a little dance with his waist and then eased upright and gathered his agbada again. He then waved with his two hands and said “okay bye bye everybody o! Agbon! You can hang around and get to know your new neighbors.”

“Okay thank you sir.”

They all watched as Alhaji Sirika took his place in the back seat of his four-wheel drive and Suraju shifted it into gear and went down Katakata Street to reverse. They waited for them to drive back past before they turned to Agbonyibo.

Agbonyibo clasped his hands together in the center of his chest and bowed.

“I go come to collect my key for evening sir,” he said to Papa Efe.

“When are you moving in?” Mr Zubi said.

“I go come wash the house and paint am tomorrow. So na next tomorrow.”

“When are you bringing the monkey and crocodile?” Achike said.

“Na only dog I go carry when I pack enter, the rest dem go supply me as e enter market.”

“Olodumare!” Josiah said.

Agbonyibo turned and jumped the gutter and went down Katakata Street.

“He even has a hunchback,” Josiah said.

“Yes. It is small but visible.”

“Will he be cooking the crocodile in the kitchen we all share?”

“Where else will he cook his food?”

“What if somebody eat am by mistake, especially the monkey? Mkpoikanna said.

“Then it is long throat that will kill such a person.”

“And I thought Akunna was our only problem.” Josiah said.

“We may be overreacting gentlemen. He does look a nice guy.”

“He sells dog, tortoise and crocodile Cosmas. Have you ever heard of a thing like that before?”

Mr Cosmas kept quiet.

“As soon as I saw Alhaji Sirika wearing that white agbada I knew nothing good would come out of it,” Josiah said.

“See how Ganduje has given agbada a bad name.”

“You will see that nothing will happen to that one now because he is in APC.”

“He has constitutional immunity from prosecution unless the state legislature impeaches him.”

“What of Oshiomhole? Does he have immunity? Did the Federal High Court not order his arrest and prosecution for fraud while he was Edo State Governor? Meanwhile, they have kept Fayose in custody. Even beyond the constitutional forty-eight hours.”

“Gentlemen, I am not interested. We are having a strange new neighbor called Agbonyibo. Let that sink in,” Achike said and walked back into the compound and into his room.

“Wetin Agbonyibo mean sef?” Mkpoikanna asked Josiah.

“When he comes, you can ask him. He is moving in in two days time.”
