My bad. All fair and noted.
However if that's what Phase 1 of NA training looks like, then I shudder at what the remaining training courses are... Most of the videos on YouTube are more hazing vs actual useful combatant tips.

There's a 3part video on YouTube that shows all what NA do during their stay at Depot & its not all hazing. All the same I find it archaic such things still happen

On NASI one can nearly not put up a defence for them when considering the happenings these days.

Okay bro, you are indeed a slowpoke.
Read my past comments on here. I questioned what ever happened to leadership and who are the men responsible for these units in disarray.
But since you don't seem to be intelligent enough ( Yes i now question your intelligence), i will leave you be.
So lack of leadership translates to indiscipline. Good for Bidex.
Because Henry and myself hammered on this only yesterday, so why are you repeating what I've already said? This man have issues.
Bad leadership, i said this yesterday for pete's sake.
Mr Roundabout.... going in circles thinking you are making sense.
We argued for literally no reason, you just came to the same freaking conclusion i already arrived at since yesterday, smh.
Bye dude, you are obviously too slow to deal with.

bidexiii:

You just confirmed that you don't know what you're talking about; you just want to be heard.

In the military when the leadership is faulty & corrupt it translate to indiscipline through the ranks and files of the command, which was what av be saying and you just confirmed it. Do you just want to spin garbage or your problem is comprehending what av been saying .

Weapons are plain excuses, the truth without any sugar coating is own forces were lax and performed below expectation.
We really need to redeem ourselves.

This is a factual truth. No weapon, no weapon and those bloody fools carted away huge ammunitions.

I think this has to do with training. Was on a clearance op with my boys which include some army guys and the guys said they wish their ops are being coordinated like this. For over a year been here, my unit never runs from those animals. We have experienced only 4 KIA till now which happened through an ambush on my convoy which lasted for like 5 hours.

Number one mission is to survive. I tried my best to save those lives. Their vehicle was stopped by bht bullets leaving them exposed. It was the normal hilux and the bastards focused fire on the vehicle and my guess is they want it to explode. The officers were defenceless as other vehicles are also under fire. We launched RPG at the fire direction since we had no GL. We fired around 11 RPG that day and these guys started coming out , approaching the pinned vehicle with the motive to abduct my boys. I wasn't my self again but the guys were already wounded.

They were able to go with around 8 wounded officers and started retreating. I initiated pursuit after talking to the boys to boost their morale. ISR established situation for us and had to leave our area for whatever mission. Gathered information together and went for the bastards which unfortunately led to a WIA as they had some guys stationed in the bush to open fire on us but fortunately, it was a little injury. We were able to retried all our boys and had 18 bht killed 4 KIA and 3WIA in total.

Well, thank you for stating this.
Some people still don't think that's the case.
What you just illustrated right there showed good leadership, sadly it's not all encompassing for the whole Army, if it were, these things wouldn't be happening.
Stay safe Chief

There is no inconsistency here, Allexpensive just made similar comment, same thing Henry said yesterday.
Troops won't be deployed without arms, if that's the case how come the enemy is always carting away same arms we claim we don't have?
or did BH brought those with them just so they could stage it?
I said before, some units are doing great, some are not.
You just said bad leadership led to indiscipline among some of these soldiers, yet that's the exact same thing we've been saying since yesterday brah. For real?
And no, I'm not leaving, why would i do that? I enjoy your pics too much for that. So no worries, not going anywhere, and i can't even be banned, ain't that weird.
Simply said i wanted to be done arguing with you, but i see you can't let sh!t go.
I'm not your enemy dude, coz at the end of the day, you made same point I already made since yesterday, except you get confused a little bit, that's okay, it happens.
We should ask Allexpensive if he get sent out to fight without magazines or Ammo, since that's part of the narrative some of you are peddling here.

And who cares if you stay or leave.

Allexpensive scenario was totally defferent, he was on patrol or clearance op's if am right. He was not defending or protecting any ground.

According to what he said they did therr best in suppressing the enemy attack before running out of ammunition and retrieved.

Defending your base where there are ammunition dumps/cache is a defferent ball game , these insurgents will attack you in all directions. The numbers of insurgents who normally carry out ambush mission are usually few when compared to a full invasion on bases where they know that they cart away with ammunition, I av been in such scenarios twice on recovering damaged APCS.

Am in full support that our training and doctrine as to be changed but first thing first; we av to do away with obsolete equipment, boost troops morale while these changes are gaining on.

i ain't feeding anyone on this thread, so why should they care.
You should calm down, obviously you are pained, take am easy ooo
Regardless of how you wanna see it, if my figure is accurate, there were almost 400 men in that place when they were attacked, and yet we got routed, if that's not enough to give anyone pause, then why bother?
Open to correction on the number of troops, but i believe i saw 370 or 340 being thrown around yesterday. That many number of troops should be more than enough to put up one hell of a fight, hold that location until help arrives, but if there is disorganization, that help probably won't come. you don't need to be a soldier to say this.
We should be thankful we aren't located in the middle east, otherwise our sit of power would be located in Ghana by now grin grin . I mean, compare what we are dealing with to the monsters they have other there.
Thought there were no ammunition. ha, i got it, it ran out, okay, i hear ya

PRESS STATEMENT ON SPURIOUS DISSEMINATION OF FAKE VIDEOS PURPORTING BHT ATTACKS ON MILITARY LOCATIONS

1. The NA has continued to observe with great dismay the myriads of photos and video clips being recklessly distributed on various social media platforms by different caliber of persons. It is indeed shocking to see how these well doctored propaganda materials from enemies of the State has succeeded in creating fear and unrest in the polity. These doctored materials are obviously serving the purposes intended by the terrorists to misinform the populace, spread panic, hatred, religious intolerance and above all to undermine national security.

2. The NA wants to categorically state that the videos and images making rounds as the purported attack on Metele base are false and do not in any way portray the reality of the situation on the ground. Unfortunately, many do not know that indiscretional posts and comments from a citizen that is supposed to be solidly behind its military in these trying times could have a way of dampening the morale of the troops. However, the NA’s resolve in protecting the territorial integrity and sanctity of the Nigerian State would not be undermined by detractors or tacit supporters of the enemies of our beloved country.

3. Whilst appreciating the concerns of well-meaning Nigerians who genuinely care for the well-being of its military, the NA wants to draw the attention of its detractors to the fact that spreading of fake news is an offense and violates the provisions of Section 24(1)(a),(b) and (2)(a),(b),(c)(i),(ii) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition & Prevention etc) Act, 2015.

4.In view of this, please note that the NA would henceforth report these infractions and file cases against individuals or groups who deliberately spread fake news that aims to undermine national security, in courts of competent jurisdictions. Equally, the NA wishes to inform the public of its iReport channels on the NA website, Android and iOS platforms via which the public can forward meaningful advice, criticism or observations that would enable the NA better serve the good people of Nigeria. You are to please note this and kindly disseminate through your various channels.

https://peccaviconsulting./2018/09/17/battle-of-the-fobs-boko-haram-iswaps-2018-rainy-season-offensive-1/

Type of attacks: other than the ambushes in Tarmuwa and Boboshe, all the attacks have been deliberate combined arms attacks with support weapons such as vehicle mounted AAA guns, mortars, improvised rockets and recoilless rifles, as well as dismounts with small arms, RPGs and machine guns. Enemy tactics have varied slightly, with deception being used in some circumstances to gain entry, in others support weapons have been used to suppress the position before attack. However in all cases the enemy uses overwhelming force in their attacks.

Time of attacks: the attacks have mostly been in the evening between 4.00pm and 8.00pm, with some dawn and early morning attacks as well. 5.00pm to 7.30pm appears to be the most popular time range. These timings could be to coincide with evening meals at the FOBs but more likely, to reduce the risk of interference from the NAF. Even if aircraft could scramble immediately it would take them 30-40 minutes to arrive, giving them at most an hour of daylight to acquire and destroy targets. In reality the length of time it takes to request, authorise and task air support means aircraft would generally arrive after nightfall limiting their ability to support friendly troops. The enemy can thus loot the base until early morning and then extract before dawn with their loot.

It is in the opinion of this author that Boko Haram ISWAP has been involved in a thus far successful campaign of spoiling attacks to prevent the establishment of friendly FOBs and prevent friendly forces from dominating the ground. The enemy has focussed on attacking FOBs close to Lake Chad as often as they can with larger scale attacks at range to prevent the bigger FOBs from being established that would support the Lake Chad FOBs.
...

Nigerian military intentions to garrison Northern Yobe and Borno were correct, a successful operation would have reduced enemy freedom of movement and forced them to disperse, fight attritional battles on friendly forces terms or else be confined to a small space where they could be reduced with air power.

...

This plan however was poorly executed, failing to anticipate an enemy reaction or adequately prepare sub units to fight aggressive defensive battles.

I KNOW THE STORY OF BANGUI HAS CAUSED A LOT OF ARGUMENTS ON MOST OF THE THREADS HERE.

But in reality I think it's a good example of why it is so important to have reconn teams outside the base.

S.A special forces provided an early warning for our guys, it gave ground commanders time to prepare and set up defensive position around the base and the fact that you don't need sophisticated weaponry and heavy fire power to be able to push your way out of a Brutal ambush or to hold back an enemy that more fighters and weapons than you.

The commanders didn't just sit back and ignore the warnings.

Special forces were the first to detect and engage the Seleka Rebels.

Nigeria Obviously has good S.F units who know the land very well so I still ask myself where are they being used?
Why aren't they running reconn mission in these danger areas?

http://parabat.org.za/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/The_Battle_in_Bangui_-_The_Untold_Inside_Story.pdf

From just after 16:00 on Friday 22 March until about 21:00 on Sunday 24 March, about 200
South African soldiers fought a series of running battles outside Bangui in the Central African
Republic (CAR) against a well-armed Seleka force of several thousand, that has since been
estimated at between 4 000 and 7 000. And they did so while the CAR Army (Forces armées
centraficaines or FACA) evaporated around them and the peacekeeping forces of Multinational
Force of Central Africa (FOMAC) disappeared from the scene.
In the process the soldiers fired off more than 12 000 rounds of 12.7 mm machinegun
ammunition1, more than 60 rockets from 107 mm rocket launchers2 and 200 bombs from
81 mm mortars3
1 Fired by the 12.7 mm calibre heavy machinegun, which has a range of 1 800 m. Can destroy light vehicles and
penetrate light cover, such as a lightly-built structure. 2 Lightweight, multi-barrel launcher that fires 18.8 kg rockets to a range of 8 000 m; can be used in a direct fire
role in an emergency. These are Chinese weapons originally captured in Angola and kept in service, mainly
with the Special Forces.
3 The South African 81 mm M8 mortar fires various bombs to a range of 7 000 m. It is a high-angle weapon
designed to engage targets behind cover.
, and thousands of rounds from 7.62 mm machineguns and 5.56 mm rifles. In
all, they would appear to have used some ten tons of assorted munitions.
In all, the fight cost 13 killed and 27 wounded. But the force retained its cohesion
throughout and was able to fall back from two separate engagement areas to its base and to
hold it until their attackers gave up trying to overrun them, offering, instead, a ceasefire and
disengagement. By then they had suffered as many as 800 killed, according to the estimates of
officers with considerable operational experience and by some NGOs in the country. Later
reports say several hundred more may have died of wounds due to a lack of medical support.
It helps to put those figures in perspective: the British Army’s 3rd Parachute Battalion
regards its deployment in Afghanistan’s Helmand province for six months in 2006 as a hard
fought deployment. Over that time, its battle group of 1 200 soldiers, lost 15 killed and 46
wounded, and fired 479 000 rounds of ammunition, all the while supported by light tanks,
artillery, attack helicopters, Hercules gunships and fighters.

4) The Approach:

Enemy: the enemy generally approaches with vehicles in column with motorcycles on the flanks and circling around the column, at times masquerading as Nigerian forces, in the event they cannot sustain the subterfuge they are generally careful not to molest civilians and warn them to leave.

What does it mean: the enemy must leave its harbour to attack friendly forces, to do this safely they must use a combination of speed, stealth, camouflage and deception. The enemy at this point is once more vulnerable to detection and interdiction.

Friendly forces actions: Friendly forces should be postured to respond to any such approach. Early warning can be given by local villagers, standing patrols, observation points, ISR assets etc. Points should be identified where artillery and indirect fire can be used to neutralise the enemy such as ford or bridges over streams, gaps in walls or berms, road junctions etc.

5) The Attack:

Enemy: The enemy attacks follow a broad pattern of dismounted fighters advancing towards the target engaging the friendly forces whilst crew served weapons mounted on pick ups trucks remain a tactical bound behind the dismounts suppressing friendly positions. Depending on what is available the enemy appears to attempt to bombard the target with mortars, homemade rockets, recoilless rifles or armoured VBIEDs. The dismounts draw fire and waste friendly ammunition, whilst vehicles manoeuvre around the target and suppress friendly strongpoints.

...
Conclusion

The enemies tactics, techniques and procedures however present friendly forces with numerous opportunities to defeat this campaign with a more aggressive and well planned counter offensive by:

-Improving SOPs for FOB and area defence
Improved training for commanders and soldiers, particularly in terms of defence, artillery observation, night fighting, patrolling etc
-Revising SOPs to ensure that rapid counter attacks are launched immediately an enemy attack is reported in order to cut off the enemies retreat, recapture a fallen position, attack the enemy while they are attacking the FOB or pursue them to their concentration areas
-Revising training and SOPs to ensure commanders and soldiers are well trained and practice in fighting withdrawals and counter attacks, ensuring they are able to preserve life and equipment and deny any equipment they cannot take with them.
-Reprioritising friendly objectives from just repelling or defeating enemy attacks to destroying any enemy force, by cutting off their retreat, fixing them with fire and manoeuvre, destroying them with concentrated fire from ground, air or artillery and then relentlessly pursuing all survivors.

These however are only one side of the equation, a successful defensive plan simply deters or defeats enemy attacks. The old adage that attack is the best form of defence remains true today, as the enemy is ably demonstrating.

Victory does not come from God, it comes from well planned operations by well trained, well led, properly equipped and disciplined men.

You see, their are many FOBs scattered around the Chad basin (I barely can't recognize any pattern).

SF can only do so much (Although I harbor some thoughts that Commanders don't employ them well). Normally I expect a Bn to have a small section doing tactical recce in the Bn's AOR

This is a factual truth. No weapon, no weapon and those bloody fools carted away huge ammunitions.

I think this has to do with training.

Thank God you're alive.

Thank you for this brilliant piece.
It's starting to look like it has to do with training. The COAS is busy singing like a canary about how he wants to DOUBLE IN SIZE.
No plans for expanding training Aids nor plans for materiel, nor even simple things like bases the new size would settle in.

Who knows the ratio of Instructors to soldiers at NASI or supplies ratio to the soldiers in training. One thing I respect the CAS for is he works from ground up. Splitting GTC from RTC, building infrastructure to accommodate the desired training. This is lacking in the Army

Its like they fail to plan, and unfortunately its a plan to fail

lastly, you're in my prayers (Although its awkward saying "God keep allexpensive" grin)

With or without the ERA added amour the RPG can destroy the T72, depending on where it is been hit. But I doubt if it was an RPG hit.

These MBT where a bonded when the attack started, reliable source has it that most of these tanks are not operational worthy.
Would you please just shut up you ignorant buffoon.

Tank armour without add-on protection easily defeats RPG-7s. They are essentially the only widely used barrel fielded vehicles that can defeat RPGs.

Those Tanks were clearly set on fire deliberately.

You have no source, just shut your trap.
