Buhari’s govt ignored intelligence warnings about Boko Haram, says S’African mercenary group
November 25
2018

Specialised Tasks, Training, Equipment and Protection International (STTEP), a South African mercenary company, says President Muhammadu Buhari rejected intelligence warnings about operations of Boko Haram in Borno.

STTEP was employed by former president Goodluck Jonathan in January 2015 to assist the Nigerian army in rescuing the Chibok girls.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, Eeben Barlow, STTEP chairman, said Nigerian soldiers have been reaching out for help since his company’s services were terminated.

Barlow is speaking out in the wake of the deadly killing of Nigerian soldiers by Boko Haram insurgents.

The latest attack in Melete village, Borno, is believed to have led to the death of no less than 100 soldiers.

Weighing in on the development, Barlow said Buhari’s administration did not allow his company to complete the objective of “degrading and destroying” Boko Haram in Borno.

He wrote: “There is, in a purely military sense, no such thing as a ‘technical defeat’—something the President, as an ex-military man ought to know. Sadly, he also chose to make the successes of 7 Infantry Division and 72 Mobile Strike Force (MSF) his own, when it wasn’t.

“President Buhari and his team were, however, part of the political leader group that led the vocal charge about STTEP’s presence in Nigeria. Indeed, they made it known that the company’s presence would not be tolerated under his office.

“The initial 3-phase campaign strategy (known as ‘Operational Anvil’) to degrade and destroy BH in Borno State, was rejected by his advisors.

“Many of the men we trained as part of 72 Mobile Strike Force have remained in contact with us (STTEP), pleading for our return to Nigeria. They have also told us that they have been used to a point of exhaustion.

“Prior to, and following our departure from Nigeria, we issued numerous intelligence warnings to his government. These intelligence warnings were all rejected in favour of a false belief. Neighbouring countries were advised not to listen to us as it was claimed to be a cheap attempt to ‘get a contract’. Chad, Cameroon and Niger are now also reaping the benefits of rejecting intelligence in favour of an agenda-driven narrative.”

In a statement released on Saturday by his media team, the president described the attack as a national tragedy.

Loosing lives in the battle field calls for sober reflection on the part of compatriots. The habit of dancing on the graves of our fallen heroes for political gains should stop.

The STTEP Chairman claims the service of his company was discontinued by PMB regime probably on inception. So one would wish to know the channel through which they tried to pass the said Intel. Most importantly, how where they able to gather such intel when their contract had already been terminated. Where they contracted by another party in the same theater of conflict?

In short simple terms, buhari needs to rehire your company to help us fight boko haram?
And the best time to reiterate this point is when Nigeria just lost some of our gallant fighters?.

I hope Us army also called him for a contract hire when they lost 4,424 men in Iraq and 2,372 in Afghanistan .

Our gallant men of the Nigerian Army had held our territory safe this past few years without the capture of any territory, with their sweat and blood. They get ambushed and killed due to lack of supplies for their hardwares rather than find a way to support them and boost their morales.. We are thrashing them by supporting this jobbers

Its very clear that boko haram has turned into a billion dollars industry with many benefactors(like the arms dealers, meceneries, defense contractors and corrupt government officials) and Nigerians the sole lossers (same losers still politicising it out of sheer ignorance).

One thing is certain about northeast, they have the violence ideology, and no amount of war can change it. They were the same matersina sect of the 80s, they had another one in the 90s and now 2012 till date, this are different Generation with same ideology.

Should we continue paying meceneries for a recurrent problem, since Goodluck paid in dollars few days to 2014 election, Buhari should also pay some days to 2019 elections. When are we going to end such cycle. Who even know if the beneficiary of the war are the ones arming boko haram

Why won't Buhari/Jubrin ignore the intelligence report? So long as the attack wasn't gonna be on cows.

Buhari and the word "Intelligent" don't go together.

So don't expect him to heed to your warning or advice.

Below are the words that can use to make him listen tô you.

-Fullani
-Zombie
-Zoo
-Cow
-Kill
-Bomb
-Butcher
-Shoot
-Loot
-Lifeless and Nnamdi Kanu.

Apart from those words, no other word exist in his dumb skull.

Love or hate it, those mercenaries did a wonderful job. Almost one year after they left no major BH activity was seen. I've seen the videos of their operation. Those guys are exceptional. PLEASE, TAKE A LOOK AT PARAGRAPH 6 AGAIN!!! It's a huge shock.

THE NEXT THING AFTER EVERY MAJOR ATTACK LIKE THIS ONE IS THE RELEASE OF "REPENTANT BOKO HARAM MEMBERS". I HOPE IT DOESN'T HAPPEN THIS TIME.

It's not far-fetched to think that intel gathering, interpretation, and deciphering was part of the objectives carried out by STTEP.
During the course of their previous missions, they must have been able to gather intelligence on Boko Haram's future targets or possible plans.
This info must've been relayed to FG, but was promptly rejected for reasons best known to them; resulting in the heavy losses at Metele.

Recruiting mercenaries to fight a war on your own soil is one of the dumbest thing GEJ did as Machiavelli rightly wrote that a "mercenary, having no allegiance, will eventually hold the prince who employs him hostage for increasing amounts of money".

Do you think Intel of 2015 in a constantly changing conflict situation like the one we have can still be useful in this present time? Say something else. If the Intel they claim to have was accurate, it could only mean one thing - STTEP is still there working for another party-Boko haran. Mercenaries are not charitable.

perhaps GEJ best decision as Commander in chief was to engage those South African mercenaries. with their experience, they got the job done, there's no need to stick to pride when your troops are dying on the fronts. Ask anybody today, in the war against Boko Haram, the 72nd Mobile strike force are the most used and most effective. This is a unit trained and armed by Eben Barlow's mercenary units. the routed Boko Haram within weeks to the election, making elections possible in the North East.

The mercenary were the one that introduced the Reva Mraps into the Nigerian army armoury, go to the north east and ask of Reva Mraps!

I believe president buhari believed terminating their contract was best for the country. But sometimes good intentions turn out badly.

Those guys have the tools and the intelligence, the have men getting black Intel on ground, all we have to do is fight this war the smart way.

Outsourcing will mean we let the mercs fight while more Nigerian soldiers get to go home alive and see their wife and kids. That way we spend much less on deployment, and pay mercenaries to do the dirty work. it's a win win for the mercenaries and buhari's administration.

First will be polite enough to tell you I am not Igbo, I am from an ethnic minority group. Now as per proof, I am an avid follower of the war against Boko Haram, it's come naturally when you have 3 relatives fighting in the North East. Now, there is this military blog, beegeagle.(Africa largest defense blog) if you check up post related to the 72nd mobile strike force, I am sure you will understand why we needed and still need those mercenaries. There are other African defense blog that explains the roles of those mercenaries in the North, I will be happy to point you in the right direction. thanks

Will Pride and self-righteousness allow the APC/Buhari to consider using the services of these people again - seeing that they have exhausted all the workable strategies to bring the war to an end as they have promised in 2015?!

In wars, one may never do without mercenaries though it's not always advisable because of issue of allegiance but terminating the contract with those guys at the peak of their mandate in Borno was a very dumb move by Buhari.

Sending southern soldiers, especially Igbos while withholding atms from them as they confront BK is not the solution either.
When reigned in the BK with full force, he was accused of trying to decimate the northern population.
When Gen Ihejirika went after BH with the ferrocity it deserved, a so called Borno elders protested.
Buhari, yes, candidate Buhari promised to solve the BH problem within a few months, as a retired general!
After granting freedom to non repentant BH people, he proclaimed that they have been technically defeated.
GEJ hired mercenary, because of obvious religious, ethnic, and regional issues involved.
Doing something is better than doing nothing, even if it's re-hiring the mercenary!

The Truth is that Nigeria should have allowed these men to finish of all Boko haram camps before we sent them packing ..Give STTEP and Executive outcomes six months and Boko haram will beat a retreat .. we all saw the devastation just 120 men of STTEP and EO and two Ukrainiain Hind pilots gave Boko in just 5 weeks, the.damage was so much Buhari was then crying like a baby for their removal from Nigerian soil

The US army used a lot of private dogs of war in Iraq and they still do today ...the truth is that our Army doesn't know how to fight and they need to work with such experienced brilliant fighters for about 6 months to get them battle focused and hardened... In 2014 because of just 120 of them embedded in the North East Boko haram knew what they faced even Shekau had to flee the NE because of the devastation this group brought to the fight
