Very possible to graduate with first class ...just work harder

To make a second class upper, he would have to maintain a CGPA of at least 4.5 per session till he graduates. To make a first class, he would need to push that envelope to 4.7 CGPA per session till he graduates.

I think the only way for this to work is if he’s a goal oriented smart worker and the university isn’t stingy with grades.

It's still very possible for him to make a 2nd class upper, even a first class. But the probability of making a first class is low compared to a 2nd class upper

He can make a second class upper but he has to be making nothing less that 4.0 per semester, I'm not really sure he can make first class.

I'm a realistic person and also pragmatic individual and I always say the truth regardless of hurt

I started with 2.88 in my first semester 100 level and in second semester, same level I had 3.44. In 200 level, first semester, I had 3.54. Second semester 200level, I had 4.45 (that was the turning point). By the end of 300 level, my cgpa was around 3.7 (with 3. in both semesters).
so, you see you can still make 2.1 if not first class.

All you need do is to work hard, work smart and be determined.

Maybe you or your friend , do a paper work calculation by inputting A* grade for all the remaining courses you would offer before graduation and if it clicks you are only the limitation. So, work tirelessly while not minding any form of discouragement or difficulties that may come your way.

He does not need to maintain a 4.7 CGPA to make a 2.1. He only needs to maintain 3.8 to 4.00 GPA. I was in that situation before. I moved from 3.19 in my 100 level to 3.60 when I graduated but it took me extra efforts.
