but..wait a minute guys....don't y'all think we've been getting this COIN thing all wrong?.... A wise guy once told me, 'take out all the bad guys, then new bad guys will come take their place'....we can't just think if we kill them all the problem would just simply go away do we?...the Americans have been in Afghanistan for over a decade now..and surprise, surprise....the Taliban still controls about 60% of the country!!....now, how is it that the strongest country in the world with all the fancy toys.....ucavs, tactical and or technical superiority can not successfully eliminate a bunch of AK wielding fanatics?.....it's because it is counter insurgency!!!....gun wielding foreigners ''imposing themselves'' on the local pop. you can never win this kind of war militarily, Bleep it!!....trump just figured that out....that's why he's pulling the boys and girls out of syria....you can all him all you want but that, my friends is the best decision he has ever made!...the U.S.A isn't winning the war on terror, the're only making new enemies....the sooner they'd pulled out of there the better.....the only way to really win the COIN war is politically, compromise.....no matter how bleeped up someone is....you'd still sort for a peace of mind...if there's peace...economic activities would flourish and if that happens they'll be prosperity for the local community...if there's that..then they'll certainly be peace....I'm very disappointed to say that the only solutions we hear from top brass are military solutions only...that wouldn't get us anywhere it would only extend the underlaying problem...that there was and still is poverty and neglect in the north east...and if we don't solve this problem or first things first, think there's a problem...and continue to treat the enemy as shit....then am sorry to say this folks, they'll still be insurgents in the north east hundreds of years to come, like in Afghanistan..the super tucs, jf-17s and whatever badass toys we can afford to buy won't save us we should learn from the mistake. i guess it's alright to say, YOU CAN NEGOTIATE WITH TERRORISTS!!!
I must say I am shocked at this comment. Though I respect it as your personal opinion. The mere suggestion of seeking "political compromise" with Islamic extremists is unimaginable. On what basis are we to negotiate with terrorists?, these people are not even pursuing genuine and progressive ambitions, what they seek is a caliphate, and the basic instrument of a caliphate is military expansionism, giving them such a compromise today is tantamount to encouraging future rebellion. So are we to give the entire country, in fact, the entire region to a bunch of crazed ragamuffins?

If everyone thinks they can make trouble and get settled by the government, then we aren't even safe anymore. What about the thousands of soldiers that have shed their blood to protect every inch of territory we have in that region today?.

The problem is that the Nigerian government is not serious about putting an end to the Boko Haram question, if we procure very sophisticated firepower from the appropriate quarters and train our men properly, we will pummel these miscreants into submission through sheer military force.

I think i agree with you. However we're stuck in a very terrible situation. The Nigerian army is doing so badly in the prosecution of this insurgency that we're going to be negotiating from a position of weakness.

We need a complete overhaul of the military. Buratai is completely out of ideas and his league. We desperately need a change of leadership, training, equipment and doctrine.

See how the military keeps losing equipment, it's embarrassing.

You don't negotiate with certain types of terrorists. What concessions do you offer religious fanatics who increasingly demand more often than necessary? Sharia in the North then they're killing off non adherents and proclaiming they're not subject to the constitution. Afghanistan and or Pakistan aren't the best examples of why we should kowtow cos their armies are terrible and some of their soldiers are also apathetic to their government they claim to be for.

With political will Iraq & Syria collectively ran their offensives in parallel until shitty state lost almost all of their positions plus they're constantly being attacked. Both countries enjoy similar benefits with Nigeria in having soldiers with far opposed ideologies to the terrorists they fight.

The unfit training/doctrine norm is what the current hierarchy is exhibiting.
Example, ordinary army cadets are on the front page today beating up a civilian. Same pattern all over the country cos the same they go through in the name of training which they think it's alright to do.

With the attacks, we simply don't know the dynamics of warfare. Probably they ran out of ammo or got surprised. However the patterns are too awfully similar for them not to have fixed the issues. Bases overrun, looted and to be continued at the next position. It also looks like the army is under manned with soldiers spending far too long on front lines becoming demoralised or losing the will to keep fighting through horrors and mental strength. I'm seeing katyusha, tanks, apcs getting destroyed or seized by enemies attacking with hmg, aa guns and lots of half trained recruits.

Nigeria is also reaping the benefits of the people they elect. Arguing about Jonathan and Buhari like both didn't 'come, see and failed woefully'
This country is breeding a terrible system of governance that means people don't even know what leadership entails. The piecemeal semblance of terrible governance is what some of you arel fighting over abi? After all, it isn't like they didn't collectively oversee the murder of tens of thousands of Nigerians but they did nothing to stymie that trend.

If you want to negotiate, do it with the type of ND militants or the various disenfranchised groups. However to Negotiate with these bastards bh and the other group especially from the current position of weakness, then be prepared to lose more than we've seen.

well, okay think about the situation in zamfara for instance, i believe it's more of a socioeconomic problem rather than a full scale jihadi rave....sending more policemen or military men is sending the wrong signals...all this bandits want is to eat...rather than straight up murder them, we might as well had tried other 'reasonable' solutions first...all am saying is military solutions to problem might no be as effective as we think...but it can work in pari passu with political solutions.

Yes, maybe we can negotiate with truly marginalized groups like those in Zamfara, that is, if they have genuine grievances that prompted them to pick up arms against the state in the first place. But BH and ISWAP are fundamentalists, they believe in the gaseous idea of a theocratic state that disregards the sovereignty and constitution of Nigeria, there can be no negotiation with them.

To be honest, I'm stumped on how to go about that.
There's local dynamics at play here. There's reasons why it's being localised to North East rather than all over the North.
We do have the basic denominators of illiteracy, abandoned/neglected children (who are potentially easy recruits to fight against the state) plus borderline extremist beliefs (considering the many iterations of religious violence endured in the past - some as flimsy killings in the name of hosting Miss World)

We can defeat them militarily but also ensure systems where ideas or beliefs aren't allowed to gain military strength while also working on turning hearts and minds away from evil.

Namibia gets a sh1t load of tourists this time of year, and it could just be that the police are overstretched.

Besides Namibia is an extremely safe and stable country with no history of any civil intimidation/oppression.... If anything we should take Namibia as an example to follow.

December is when locals n tourists travel and party the most so Shopping malls, drinking establishments and our roads become lawless...so added visibility to assist the police might help reign this in

The Navy usually deploys divers as lifeguards at popular beaches as well
