There was a brief silence.

‘Do you talk about her like this to your wife?’

I became curious. ‘Why did you ask that?’

‘If you talk like this to her, she’ll suspect that something is going on between you and the woman.’

‘Oh, oh. That means you too are thinking that something is going on?’

‘No. but I know if you say it like this to your wife, she’ll think so.’

I thought she had a point there, so there was no need to drag that issue. There was another silence.

‘Your pay must be good. After all, you work in the gas and oil sector.’

I smiled. ‘Well, for those of us in the private sector, the earnings in the oil and gas sector are favorable. But, sometimes, business thrives a lot,
while sometimes, there’s a lull.’

She nodded. ‘I was targeting the oil sector before the government job came.’

‘The government job is not bad. Enny too works for the government.’

‘Federal or state?’

‘Federal.’

‘They’re better off. Although Lagos is trying, the federal workers are still better off.’

I nodded. ’Between private law practice and working for the government, which is better?’

‘It all depends on you,’ she said ‘If you’re hoping to excel as a barrister and as a legal practitioner, then private law practice is the best. By
then, Lara is just a baby lawyer who is okay with Ministry of Justice work.’

We laughed over that. Lara was with me till after four o’clock. When it was twenty minutes past four, I decided to close for the day.

‘Let’s go to my house, so you can know the place. Anifowoshe is not very far from here.’

‘Good suggestion,’ I concurred.

I packed my things in my bag and stood up. I went to see Mandy. ‘I’ll be going now,’ I told her. ‘Have a lovely weekend.’

Mandy looked at Lara briefly and looked at me in an odd way.

I waved at her and left her office. I steered Lara to the ground floor. We went to the car park.

‘This is your ride?’ she pointed at the Toyota car.

‘Yes.’

‘It’s a good one.’

‘Thank you.’

I unlocked the car and we went inside.

‘Thank God it’s Friday,’ she said.

‘Yes, thank God. One can take a break for the next two days.’

I drove out of the premises and joined the Obafemi Awolowo Way. Within ten minutes, we were on the street where she lived. She directed me
to the one-storey building. Her two-bedroom flat was on the first floor. I followed her to the place. She opened the apartment and we stepped inside. I looked around the sitting-room. She opened the windows and drew the curtains apart. I stared at the street below briefly.

‘It’s a nice flat, Lara,’ I said.

‘Thank you. I actually share it with a friend. Maggie works in a law chamber, but is presently on a trip to Abuja. Please, sit down and feel at
home.’

‘Thank you.’ I sat down on a sofa.

She flicked on the television, scanned the channels and handed the remote control to me.

‘Excuse me.’ She went inside one of the bedrooms. I sighed and settled for a movie channel. After some minutes, she came back. She had
changed into casuals of blue t-shirt and jeans skirt.

‘So, what can I get you, Alex?’

I shook my head. ‘Nothing for now.’

‘You have to take something before you go. Just ask for any food, and I will get it for you.’

‘Alright. For now, cold water will be okay.’

She smiled and went to the kitchen to bring a bottle of chilled water and a glass cup. ‘There’s also juice and even wine,’ she said.

‘Oh, come on, Lara. I’m not a stranger to you.’

‘My drinks are not for strangers alone.’ She laughed.

‘O-kay. But this water is okay for now.’

She sat by my side. ‘I remember you were not taking alcohol, then. Are you still a teetotaler?’

‘Yes,’ I said. ‘I like it that way.’

The movie of Samuel L. Jackson was aired on the television. I stared at the screen.

‘There’s something I want to ask you, Alex.’

I turned to glance at her. ‘What’s that?’

She stared at me. ‘Did Enny move out of your house as a result of domestic violence?’

I chuckled. ‘Oh, no. You should know me, Lara. I can never lift my hand against a woman. Never.’

She sighed. ‘I asked because in the course of my job, I’ve found out that many marriages are not working as a result of rising domestic
violence. We have so many of such cases on our hands.’

I shook my head emphatically. ‘No, it’s not domestic violence. But it’s a case that is quite complex and complicated.

She smiled at me. ‘Can you tell me about it?’

‘Hey, is it true that you lawyers and journalists are always curious?’

She laughed briefly. ‘Maybe. Maybe not. I just feel like knowing why your wife of less than a year will leave her matrimonial home.’

I nodded. ‘Your curiosity is on course. I’ll tell you.’

She moved ever closer to my side as if I was about to reveal a long-kept secret.

‘It’s actually all my fault,’ I said. ‘I got a lady pregnant weeks before my wedding.’

Her eyes popped out. ‘Alex, how could you do such a thing?!’

‘It was just a fling. I never knew it would end up like that. I didn’t know it resulted into pregnancy until a couple of months after my wedding.
She would not abort the baby, despite all I said. She put to bed some weeks ago. All the while, I couldn’t tell Enny. It was the other lady that
called to inform her she has had a baby for me. The result of that was her moving from the house.’

Lara stared long at me before she said anything. ‘Ehn, you men. So, you Alex can fall into this kind of thing. I thought you were always decent.’

I didn’t like her comment, but I managed a grin. ‘Well, even a decent man can fall into that kind of temptation. I’m not an angel, and I’m not a
saint.’

She seemed to think over it. ‘I can’t blame Enny, I would probably behave the same way if I should find myself in that situation. You should
have been more careful, Alex.’

‘I agree. You’re right.’

‘Any way, what’s your plan about the other lady and the baby?’
‘Well, I can’t deny my son. I’ll accept the responsibility of taking care of him. Funny, the lady wants me to come to the U.S. and for us to get married, but I can’t do that. I can’t leave Enny.’

‘She’s in the U.S?’

I nodded, ‘Yes, she was actually based there and only came to Nigeria briefly. There’s another truth I’ve not told you?’
‘What’s that?’

‘The lady in question is the first daughter of madam, my boss.’

Her eyes opened in surprise. ‘You don’t mean it!’
‘That’s the truth, Lara. Madam was initially angry about the whole thing, but,’ – I shrugged – ‘she has no choice than to accept the fact that I’m
the father of her first grandchild. But, I want to discontinue further relationship with the other lady and build my spousal relationship with Enny.’

She nodded meaningfully. ‘The issue is indeed complicating.’ She stared at me again. ‘So, you have a baby already through the other lady!
What about Enny? Is she expecting?’

I sighed and shook my head. ‘As at a couple of weeks before she left my house, she had not taken in. That was the irony of the whole thing:
that while a lady outside got pregnant for me, my own wife who is more expectant is yet to conceive. But, we’re working towards that and I believe that in a short time, Enny will conceive too.’

She nodded again. ‘I didn’t know you can play smart like that. A lady came in from America, and before you could say Jack, she was pregnant for you.'

Having read to this point these are my findings.

1.What Lara said can be true. We recall that Any was suspicious of Madme B when Alex first got on touch with her.

2. Insofar we pray for benefactors in life, we should also pray against being handicapped by the goodness of the benefactor. Alex has been malmaned(meaning best known to me). He can't stand to challenge the Madame. If madame should suggest marrying Stephen, Alex can hardly say no.

3. Eny should make final decision before the worst hits her.

4. Alex is too lose with Mandy. Yes, she is right Madame is slightly happy with the grandson of a thing and also begotten through Alex his favorite but Alex should be mindful of her. She can be lose to someone else or even secretly attracted to Alex.

5. Madame B is pleased with Steph pregnancy although she doesn't like it the way it is for now.

6. Eny's parents are nothing than 21st century parents who are too interested in the welfare of their daughter than in solving solution of daughter's family. Just because Eny is fortunate to be a federal employee.

7. Steph will act more than she is doing provided she has the money and Alex is still her mum's boy if this is real life. She knows what she wants and I will not be surprise if she planned her pregnacy.

8. Guys like Alex needs a strong event to help them buckle up. I feel for him because I see a lot of his character in me. Too wick for those we love and care about and having faced hardship a lot in life. But with the talents of Alex and money he has now, I expect him to be thinking of beginning a solo life of fending for his own company.

9. Eny should be board enough to win back his marriage since what happend was before marriage. And I advice 21st century ladies that gone are the days you allow minor things to scatter your family. Provided you are earning something, you can decidethe state of the family. Men bows in the time of trouble and is better time to take up the family and nurture it as you want.

10. Dear writer. Keep the flow going.

Compliment of the season.

She nodded again. ‘I didn’t know you can play smart like that. A lady came in from America, and before you could say Jack, she was pregnant for you. How old is she?’

‘About twenty-three.’

‘Oh, she’s still a kid. But she should have handled the matter better.’

She appeared to think over all I had said. Some shootings were going on in the movies. I watched the screen keenly.

Lara said something.

I diverted my attention from the television. ’Sorry?’

‘I said, and now, you are alone at home?’

‘Yes. She left with her sister that was staying with us. However, I believe Enny will soon come back home.’

‘What if she doesn’t? What if she presses for divorce?’

I shook my head pointedly. ‘I don’t think she’ll do that.’

‘You seem to believe she still loves you.’

I nodded. ‘Yes. As a matter of fact, I believe that the reason why she left my house in the first instance was the influence of her mother. Enny
will definitely come back.’ Even I was surprised by how assertive I was.

It was Lara’s turn to nod her head.

‘I wish you the best of luck, Alex, the lover boy.’ She laughed.

I smiled. ‘Thank you, Lara. I wish you the best in Mr. Right coming your way, too.’

‘Thank you.’

I continued watching the movie.

‘What d’you say to amala? I have ewedu soup and stew in the house. Can I make that for you?’

‘Oh, that will be fine. I’ve not taken amala for some time.’

She grinned and stood up. ‘Let me get started.’ She left for the kitchen. I continued watching the movie. Intermittently, Lara moved from the
sitting-room to the kitchen as she prepared food. Twenty minutes later, the food was ready. She served it on the table.

‘Food is ready, Alex.’

‘I can see that. Well done.’ I stood up and moved to the dining table, where everything was set.
She sat on the next chair. We ate in silence for some time.

‘How d’you find the food?’

I nodded appreciatively. ‘The food is delicious.’

‘Thank you.’

We finished the food and she cleared the plates. When it was about seven p.m, I stood up to go.

‘Aren’t you going early?’ she said. ‘Why leaving early? Won’t you be bored all alone in that house?’

I hesitated a bit.

‘I’m enjoying your company,’ she said. ‘Are you bored with me?’

‘No, of course not.’

‘Then, stay.’

I stayed on till 9.00 p.m. ‘It’s been a pleasure, Lara. Thank you for your hospitality. We’ll see again.’ I stood up. I could still some reluctance on
her part, but she had no choice this time. She accompanied me downstairs and waved as I drove off. I got to my apartment few minutes to ten
o’clock. There was no need I took dinner again. I watched the television in the sitting-room before I slept off.

The following day was a Saturday. I did some laundry and ironing in the morning. When it was noon, Lara called.

‘Oh, I’m so bored, Alex,’ she said. ‘Can you please come over?’
I smiled to myself. ‘Your flat mate has not come back?’ I asked needlessly.

‘She has not, and the whole place is damn boring.’

‘Alright, in the next one hour or so, I’ll be there.’

I wore a jeans and a sky blue t-shirt. My black pam sanders complimented my dressing. I left the apartment and drove to her place. Within
twenty minutes, I was there.
She opened the door as soon as I rang the doorbell.

‘Hello, baby lawyer.’

‘Hello, Alex.’

She was in a t-shirt too, and a micro skirt. I felt she looked delectable.

I sat on a sofa and she sat by my side. ‘How’s your weekend?’ I asked.

‘Boring. I’m glad you’ve come.’

A romance drama was played on the television. I watched briefly.

‘What can I get you?’

‘Anything,’ I answered.

She left for the kitchen and soon returned with a tray containing juice and ground nuts.

‘Let’s take these snacks for now.’

‘Good.’

She filled a glass cup and handed it to me. She poured groundnuts from the bottle in a small flat plate.

I took the nuts and sipped the drinks. She sipped from her glass too.
