I was travelling down to my hometown this new year for a brief stay when something caught my eyes. Every town I passed had a nice big catholic church standing at what perhaps is the center of the town. I've been seeing them before only that this time, I contemplated one small detail I always neglected. There was a school not too far from each of these churches, mostly government community primary or secondary schools. At first glance if you really paid attention, one thing will catch your eyes and that is the clear difference between the church and the school. The churches were huge magnificent edifices with magnanimous decoration, mostly still at construction with work incessantly on going - they must have cost millions. The schools? They were old, dangly, tattered roofs, some parts of the roofs were totally off, old rusted zincs, death traps of a building spotting bright paints. This was a clear depiction of the idiocy of the Nigerian people. The poor people that lived and attended these churches, contributed money for the construction of these marvelous wonder house for God whom they all ironically agree do not live on earth. Amazing parish houses for the priests whom come just right after God. But the schools, the very tool that shapes the future of their children gets not even a kobo from them, these schools are neglected to fall into ruins. Children made to study under perpetual mortal danger expected to make something out of it. Through their meager means, blood and sweat, they pool in millions through incessant launching Sundays and programs for the progression of the church. But right next door, the schools decayed away. They Invest nothing into the very thing that holds the hope for their children in shape. I can imagine how many times they complain about the #100 levy from the school administration. "Damn that thief of a headmaster" But the church? Oh, you contribute thousands of your savings with dancing and cheer. God loves a cheerful giver, never forget that. Nigerians are terribly stupid. I let myself imagine the wonders those millions buried in the church would do for the school. We could get wonderful school buildings, large and up to date, with necessary equipments needed for the children to learn and grow. The children could get a better chance at making the most from a world dependent so much on the education you receive. "Fools" I let myself complain. The parish house is bigger, better and more modern than the health center. Yet, we rush our sick to the health center to groan and die from lack. Lack of basic amentities, lack of better healthcare and better facilities. Long lines on the village taps, one of the few in each town. We complain and wait for the government. "Stupid greedy governments, why won't they provide these things for us" Why don't we use these millions to build our schools, build our hospitals, our water. When and if the government comes, they can build the churches - let's see how well that works. They invest millions to build a church, neglect the tool for their children's future then go to the church to pray for a better future for their children. Spend billions to build a church then go into the church to pray for water and food. Church: the bane of the poor, the book on which the idiocy of the Nigerian common man is written. I say, why not use these millions for the people. God loves the people, it appeals to logic that a loving God would rather have us well provided for than get a house he doesn't need. If God wants a house at the expense of our well being, then why worship something that doesn't care about you? If God would rather have us tend to our wellbeing first - then what are we waiting for? Church: and the idiocy of Nigerians are a wedded couple. 23 Likes 8 Shares |

The people you are criticizing have built more schools than you, ran more charities than u. Since you are an atheist, start with your own free well furnished schools free for the masses. Then come back and rant. |

Most of the Schools near the churches, Catholic and Anglican, were built by the churches. Gowon ordered Government take over of schools from the churches after the civil war. But Government is not maintaining the schools. In some states like Lagos, Anambra, the churches have gotten back some of the schools especially the secondary schools. |

johnydon22: You are still sounding ignorant By claiming people dont give to schools There are many members of the community who give back to schools only for the resources to be mismanaged by govt officials. But no, its their donations to Church that is painful for u. Yeye. By the way, what have you donated to the school nearest to you? |

johnydon22:It seems you are ignorant or you choose to be admant on what is on ground. First of all your write up is myopic because you use one village to judge the entire country. Have you visited other parts of the countries to see good schools?. Please try and tour round the 36 states to see numerous schools. That the government is inefficient in their responsibility doesn't mean the church should be shoulder with responsibility of building schools as the ones built by them have been taken over by the government. |

johnydon22:Yea I have read through and I have seen what op is saying. Op pointed out that instead of contributing huge some of money in building churches, such should be contributed towards building schools. Well I quite agree with the point he raised but how effective will the schools be managed?. If such amount is contributed towards building schools wouldn't some group of persons siphon the fund into their pockets?. How come many church leaders are prudent in utilizing funds contributed towards building churches and the opposite is it for community effort?. Why not look at this from this angle |

This an African man problem as he practices his own brand of Christianity. Some of the best schools ever built and maintained in Nigeria were church schools, one of which I attended for my secondary school education. My dad also attended a Catholic school , one that has produced some of the very best Nigerians. These churches also built hospitals and carried out huge works of charity. In the west and other places, this is still the case - some of the best schools worldwide are church schools. Coming back to Africa, please forgive me , but our church leaders and their cohorts are too greedy, narrow minded , fraudulent and dishonest to ever want to help anybody . Typically , the Pastor or Priest will divert funds for his personal gain and use the rest for church BUILDING ( people do not matter ) to the glory of their ego and pride. When I visit Nigeria on holiday, these church men shamelessly beg for money about 4 times in a single service. Alas, the money is NEVER used to better the lives of the people , rather it is used to promote the church leaders self indulgence and pride in standing up new buildings to the glory of MAN and not GOD. Churches in the past have really really tried and I don't mean the Pentecostal houses of shame, I mean churches like the Catholic , Methodist and Anglican. 3 Likes 1 Share |

asuustrike1:The op is very much on point! The same thing he complained about happens in my village! People do luncheons every Christmas to build beautiful edifices for the church while the only primary and secondary schools are in total ruins. People make contributions every Sunday towards the never-ending church building projects but they do nothing about their decaying schools and health centers! Then when they die of common ailments due to lack of healthcare facilities, the devil is blamed. Why can't communities donate towards revamping infrastructures in their public schools and health centers Why can't even the churches channel some of the money they con from their gullible members into reviving those decaying schools and health centers especially in the villages I quite agree with the op that Nigerians are largely stupid and irrational when it comes to religion. 3 Likes 2 Shares |

Everyone who does what the spiritual favours will be blessed, and this principle is, loving your neighbour as yourself. People must arise and take control of their lives and destinies, they must disbelieve all fables, they must work hard and care for friends and families and even foes just as the Master commanded. He who has should share with he who does not have. This is 2019, all messages must be about the commonsense application of wisdom (fear of God) and knowledge, no more place for fuzzy thought processes. We must start and continue to strongly encourage the people to take responsibility for their lives! Proverbs 22:29 Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men. Atheists, Agnostics, Theists, Freethinkers etc., work on your environment, in your immediate sphere show the people how to care for themselves. Tell them to take control of their lives 2 Likes 1 Share |
