Thank you for this. Your comment inspired mine.

To the OP, identify your passion. Why do you want to study medicine? Growing up, I wanted to be a medical doctor too based on the little information at my disposal but really, I wanted more than sitting in an office, prescribing drugs and going on calls. I actually wanted research, medical research! My passion for research has been my motivation. So know what you really want to do. What are your career goals. Mind you, Google is your friend

Good point and God bless you for pointing out facts. That was why I stated that if he had a strong GP and also finds biochemistry interesting, he could travel abroad to further his studies. Furthering his studies abroad can be in 2 ways

1) He can finance himself (maybe personal/parent/relative support)
2) On scholarship

He could particularly research in an area that bridges both biochemistry and medicine. After high school, I wanted to study medicine but of course, with Nigeria universities admission system, I ended up studying mathematics. Even though I still had a passion for medicine, I made sure I took mathematics serious because that was what life was giving me at that moment. Instead of going back to study medicine, I resolved to pursue a career that bridges both mathematics and medicine. Now, I am currently doing my PhD studies in Biomathematics in Europe. I can categorically say that I feel fulfilled because I am still exploring medicine with mathematical tools. My point here is that our destiny lies in our hands and whatever we feel may work for us, we should do. If it goes well, fine, we gain from it. If on the hand, it goes bad (I don't pray for this), it's a lesson; we learn from it.

Good day everyone. I am a final yr biochemistry student. And i have been wondering what to do after school. Ive always dreamt of studying medicine but the situation here in Nigeria has discouraged me(due to how difficult it is to get the admission even after scoring good enough scores in Jamb and p.utme).

I'm speculating if i should take a direct entry form or i shld just head for my masters as soon as im done. Im quite young so i think if i go for my masters and phd as soon as im done i shall be a phd holder by 26 provided everything goes as planned. But then there is this medicine i also love.

Your advice would be appreciated especially those that have been in this situation before and have already passed through this, any regrets.

Yes, it may be difficult to get a medicine program admission, but never forget that every single great thing is difficult to attain. For this reason, my advise for you is to hold the bull by the horns and go get what is yours; go for medicine....You will never regret it.

Good luck!

The op thought of the prestige and praises he'll get by having pHd at 26yrs which can be a bedrock of failure

Thank you and God bless you too sir. I believe the world needs people like you who perceives life from a different perspective.

A PhD is a mentally-draining, physically-exhausting and psychologically-traumatizing venture. You need more than intelligence to go through it. You need patience, perseverance, self-doubt, sleepless nights, taking bullshit, frustration and bouts of ill-health to go through it. For biological sciences, you'd spend hours in the lab trying to grow your specimen for example, results may not fit your hypothesis, your advisor may be a douchebag, your wages might be low compared to your peers already working, your social/family life would suffer especially if your spouse and your friends do not understand what you are going through, you may be disillusioned about life and sometimes lose your motivation. At some point, you'd feel the world is stacked against you. I had an advisor who refused to accept my results and was pulling me down and delaying progress, until I got fed up and kicked him out. I was lucky I had another advisor who was more closely involved in the project and gave me advise to go through and publish my thesis. Don't be scared, but the politics in academia is real.

To be a medical doctor, you have some tough exams to pass before you can be licensed. The question you should ask yourself is: what do I really want to do? Do you want to do research in academia or industry? Then do a PhD. Note that companies like Unilever, Pfizer, P and G, goverment laboratories like NAFDAC and agencies in the Ministry of Agriculture would hire PhDs in biochemistry. So your doctorate is not hopeless as you are not confined to the academia. If you are comfortable with taking care of the sick, then do your MBBS. But be aware that the time you'd put into MBBS and your PhD may be similar. I am PhD so I cannot comment on the effort you'd put into the MBBS.

Take note that artificial intelligence and robotics are becoming popular and this may (sadly) affect some aspects of the medical field in the future in case you want to choose a specialty. Also note that Okechukwu Enelamah and Bukola Saraki trained as medical doctors, but we are not aware they ever practiced. So I can't tell you do a PhD or an MBBS and you'd be fine, automatically. My advise is follow what you feel is best for you, life experiences would take you to where you ought to be. Nothing is accidental.

I studied biochemistry too, graduated 2016. I got a very good job with my biochemistry degree 4 months after service but u must have a strong 2.1 at least, be younger than 26, have alot of skills and be willing to work in financial institutions.
Don't even think of doing your masters or PhD, because when u finish u'd still come back and hustle for entry level jobs with younger fresh graduates.
Do your Nysc and go for medsurge outside the country if u can or even in Nigeria, it's better than masters abeg.
Which ever u choose to do give it ur best, every man's destiny is different. God's grace

But then you would call it lies.........hahahaha.
You have to believe in yourself and accept help from others because you can't do it doesn't mean it can't be don't or those that did it are lying.
Take care, my friend.

I had been contemplating whether to switch over to study MBBS or just obtain the Biochemistry degree first; but with the posts and comments I've read so far, Med/Surg all the way!!!

You spend your whole life in school studying, and few time to graduate you came to Nairaland to ask ridiculous question.

What's your purpose in life? Don't you have a vision or a sense of direction before even applying for university admission at all? This is a question that should be asked by secondary school student not you.

By this time of your life, you should have known what is the next step for you or else just go and learn a skill.

I pray you don't end up becoming a jobless graduate. Smh.

Salary of lecturers in Federal Universities - National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC)

NOTE all figures are before deductions such as tax, pension contribution, etc. The figures below are the GROSS salary so the NET salary (i.e. what you get paid in your bank account) will be less than what is listed below.

Total Emolument, which includes academic allowances and rent:
Graduate Assistant (CONUASS 01) - Entry level for graduates with a Bachelor's degree
Minimum salary = 105,281 Naira per month (i.e. 1,263,377 Naira annually)
Maximum salary after 6 years = 120,647 Naira per month (i.e. 1,447,767 Naira annually)

Assistant Lecturer (CONUASS 02) - Entry level for Master's degree holders
Minimum salary = 120,922 Naira per month (i.e. 1,451,071 Naira annually)
Maximum salary after 8 years = 146,241 Naira per month (i.e. 1,754,902 Naira annually)

Lecturer II (CONUASS 03)
Minimum salary = 137,459 Naira per month (i.e. 1,649,509 Naira annually)
Maximum salary after 8 years = 164,970 Naira per month (i.e. 1,979,640 Naira annually)

Lecturer I (CONUASS 04)
Minimum salary = 173,332 Naira per month (i.e. 2,079,995 Naira annually)
Maximum salary after 9 years = 223,667 Naira per month (i.e. 2,684,010 Naira annually)

Senior Lecturer (CONUASS 05)
Minimum salary = 257,625 Naira per month (i.e. 3,091,505 Naira annually)
Maximum salary after 13 years = 371,292 Naira per month (i.e. 4,455,506 Naira annually)

Reader (CONUASS 06)
Minimum salary = 314,018 Naira per month (i.e. 3,768,221 Naira annually)
Maximum salary after 10 years = 417,062 Naira per month (i.e. 5,004,750 Naira annually)

Professor (CONUASS 07)
Minimum salary = 381,695 Naira per month (i.e. 4,580,349 Naira annually)
Maximum salary after 10 years = 501,680 Naira per month (i.e. 6,020,163 Naira annually)

All Graduate Assistant, Assistant Lecturer and Lecturer II staff earn less than 150,000 Naira per month.
A Professor, after ten years in that position, barely takes home 450,000 Naira per month.

frank41:

Don't mind him...His suggestions has no basis
If a lecturer in federal university earn 140k.How much does a graduate assistant earns?
Secondly do you know what it entails to get to residency?
Thirdly, most lecturers are into other biz that pays them well which a practicing medical doctor will work all thru the whole day.
Fourthly,it is all about passion...if you have the fund travel abroad and go for your M.sc &PHD and you won't regret it o.it is only in Nigerians that doctors are given preferences but same is not applicable in other countries.

That is if the person asks for road earlier before missing road. This one don miss road. Do you know what it means to spend those precious years in the University only to end up asking this kind of question? This is a career-related question.

Immediately after secondary school, these are life issues that should have been clarified even before seeking admission into the University. Many people just want to be certificate holders without defined purpose in life.

In his own words, the OP said, " I am a final year student and I have been wondering what to do after school..." what a foolish statement!

Is finishing a PhD at 26 now an achievement? The main question should be what exactly are your career goals? Why do you want to do a masters and PhD in biochemistry? Why do you want to study medicine? Etc

My candid advice is that provided you're doing very well in biochemistry, you could further your studies or career by exploring an area that bridge both biochemistry and medicine.

If you don't like this, then you can go for your medicine if that's what gives you joy. It's better to do what you naturally have passion for. Better later than never.

Shalom!

I know some1 who applied for medicine but was given statistics, d guy was disappointed, but he believed in destiny, put his all to study that course. He graduated with an extremely good result & immediately after service he got employed at CBN.

The point is sometimes people try desperately to change thier course when they had no idea they are working away from thier correct path. Sometimes when you try to do something & thier are obstacles almost at every single step, My brother do urself a favor & just leave that thing unless of course it's the nature of that stuff to have said obstacles.
