CHAPTER 14







Maxwell went to see his father concerning what his brother Micheal had told him, they needed to be very careful.





"You mean the new doctor is sniffing around? I had a cold chill when I heard that he came back from the states, are you sure he is not working for Humphrey?" he asked his son as soon as he was done with his explanation.



"Oh no Dad, America is a huge place, that he came back from the states doesn't mean that he knows who Mr Humphrey is or even met him before" Maxwell replied shaking his head.




"Then how do you explain the fact that he was sniffing around and was asking about all the files when Evelyn's file is not there?" The old man rolled his eyes.



"It could be that he just wanted to be sure that all the files are complete before he starts work fully" He explained further.



All the same, we have to be careful, keep a close watch on him and get an insider at the hospital, we need to keep tabs on him, we can't afford to make any mistake now that Evelyn's father has finally agreed to send us the money" he caressed his staff.




"He has agreed to send the money?, I can finally get back to my life? Am so happy right now" He said letting out a smile.



"Yes, he has, that is the reason we need to keep tabs on that new doctor before he spoils our plan" the old man replied fully relaxing on the sofa.


























It was a Monday morning, Korede was heading to the hospital, wizkid _ fever was blasting from his speaker, he nodded his head to the beats of the song, he liked the song a lot, just then, he looked out of the car window and saw her standing beside her car at the side of the road looking helpless and worried, he pulled over in front of her and came down to know what happened.




"Good morning madam, is your car giving you headache in any way?" He asked.




"Yes, it just stopped moving, I have no idea on what must have happened to it, I need to be at work before 9am but am not seeing that happening" She twisted her face as a form of tiredness.



"Have you contacted your mechanic?" he asked further.



"I called him already, he said he is out of town" she sighed.



"What if I give you a ride to your work place, maybe when your mechanic gets back he will check on it" he suggested.



"in as much as I don't know you, I don't have any option than to go with you, I have a board meeting in the next 10 minutes" she said heading towards his car.



"what is your name?" she asked as soon as he joined her in the car.



"Korede, korede Benson, and you are?" he asked even though he knew every damn thing about her.



"Evelyn Desmond, actually Mrs Evelyn Desmond" she answered as she looked out of the window.



"Oh yeah, I noticed the ring" he replied not taking his gaze off the road.



"You did not ask for directions to my place of work, how will you know where am going to?" she asked again.




"PHREVER food production company, that's where you work" he blurted out but kept quiet on remembering that he was supposed to act like he knew nothing about her.




"How did you know that?" she asked in shock.




"Eeeem" he stuttered looking around but smiled as he saw the company identification card that she wore around her neck "Your ID told me" he replied with a sigh of relief.



"You are a doctor?" she asked as she saw a sticker placed on the dashboard with "Doctors cure, God heals" written bodly on it.



"Yes, am a gynecologist" he replied swerving his car to the right.



"which hospital?" she curiously asked.


"The True Vine hospital" he replied with a smile.


"Oh my gosh, that's my family hospital, my former gynocologist got transferred, wait, are you his replacement?" she asked all at once.




"If you are talking about Dr Michael, yes, am his replacement" he replied. "We are here" he completed as he pulled up in front of PHREVER company.



"Can I get your business card, I would love to discuss something with you" she asked after battling within herself.



"Yea, sure, here it is" he said stretching his hand towards her.



"thanks for the ride" she thanked him and got down from the car.


Korede placed a call immediately to Mr Humphrey.


"Hello sir, I met her again, and this time around, I gave her a ride and she asked for my business card, she will visit the hospital soon" he spoke into the receiver.




"That's good Korede, make sure you help her in any way you can" he said.



"yes sir, I will try my best" he replied hanging up.

CHAPTER 15





Evelyn had gone to see her parents, especially her father concerning the Alimony payment, she never liked the fact that Ken overworks himself and her father Was making matter worst by sending him away from home often, just as she drove in, she met her husband there already discussing with her father , she surprisingly got down and slowly move towards them, they spoke in hushed tunes that she didn't hear what they said.




"My Apple, you are here" Mr Thomas said as soon he sighted his daughter.


"Good evening Dad, Ken, what are you doing here?" she asked as she sat down.



"Is it a crime for a son in-law to visit his father in-law?" Mr Thomas asked.



"That's not what I mean Dad, I mean Ken always tell me before time whenever he wants to come here, am just surprised to see him" she replied.


"Well, we are discussing business my child, the project at Yenegoua is almost finished, I want that branch to be a blast and with Ken's intellectual capacity, we will make it work" he replied with a giggle.



"Alright Dad, I wanted to discuss something with you but I think now is not the best time to talk about it, I will come back tomorrow, Ken, see you at home" she stood up and left.
They started discussing in hushed tones again, but this time around, the only thing she could make out from what they were saying was "That was a close call".

CHAPTER 16








Evelyn had left early in the morning to visit Georgia, she was confused on whether to pay the new gynecologist she met a visit or not, she had gone to seek advice from her friend.




"Oh my friend, you are welcome" Georgia exclaimed immediately she saw her.


"How have you been G?, this new work of yours is really taking your time" she pointed out.





"I have been fine Eve, my work is really demanding coupled with the fact that I have an annoying boss, he pisses me off at every given opportunity" she rolled her eyes.



"why do I have the feeling that you will end up falling in love with him?" Evelyn smirked.




"No way is it going to happen, he is so annoying, I hate his guts" she hissed.



"That was how I hated Ken then, but look how things turned out to be, we are married and I have grown to love him" she smiled but the smile faded immediately it came when she remembered the discussion Ken was having with her father the other day, she wondered what her father meant by "That was a close call" she wondered yet again if Ken was planning on getting married to another woman, but why would her father support him?, she shook her head meaning to deal with that later.




"Are you okay Eve?, I have been talking to you for minutes now but you totally zoned out on me" she snapped at her.




"I met a guy on Monday and I don't know if am to pay him a visit or not" she explained but stopped as she saw the look her friend gave to her.




"You met a guy? I hope you know what you are doing?" she eyed her.




"Oh no G, I don't mean that kind of guy, I can't even think of cheating on Ken" she let out a sigh.





"then what kind of guy?" she asked again.



"I met a gynecologist and guess what? He is Micheal's replacement at the hospital and I don't know if I should meet him and talk to him about my plight, I just don't want to tell a stranger my problems" she looked up wearily at Georgia.




"What do you mean by a stranger? Was Micheal not a stranger before he became your gynecologist?, meet him and hear what he has to say, who knows? He might have a solution to your problem" she concluded.




"It's just that Ken told me not to visit any doctor again, that God will bless me at the appointed time" she raked her hair with her hand.




"You can always go without Ken finding out a thing, he is a man and he doesn't know how painful it is not to have a child, mothers feel it the most" she yawned.



"Okay, I will meet with him" she concluded.

















"Dad, I have gotten the doctor's address and his office schedule" Maxwell happily announced as he came into the house.



"Where is he staying at?" the old man asked.




"No 13 Sharon estate, Graceland Avenue, he is always off work on wednesdays and fridays, only visit the hospital on a special and important issue" he completed already out of breath for talking all at once.



"Good job son, now, the next thing we will do is to keep an eye on him and make sure he doesn't do anything stupid" the old man completed.



"yes Dad, I will do just that" he smiled broadly.



"Any news on Evelyn, has she gotten pregnant again?" he asked with a mean expression.




" You know what we did Dad, it is impossible for her to get pregnant" he loosed his tie, out of excitement he had forgotten all about the tie choking him to death.




"I just wanted to be sure that everything is going according to plan, we just have one week left before the money comes into my account, and once that happens, we will relocate to another state, don't think of bringing Angela and the kids to Port-harcourt again, Evelyn's father is deadly and can kill us if he finds out that we scammed him" he sipped the Amarula wine he kept on the side stool.




"No problem Dad, let the money come first, relocating is not a problem at all" He smiled again.

Evelyn breathed in and out before knocking on doctor Korede's office, she had called him earlier to let him know that she would come to the office, she was so nervous that her hands shook as she knocked.



"You can come in" she heard him speak.


"Good day doctor" she greeted as soon as she stepped into the office.




"Welcome Mrs Desmond, please have a seat" he smiled pointing at an empty sit.





"Thank you" she mouthed.


"You are welcome, what do I offer you?" he asked with the smile still plastered on his face.



"Nothing really, am okay" she replied.



"Okay, you said you have something you want to discuss with me?" he focused his gaze on her.





"Actually I think children hate me" she shook her head and pinched herself, that was a negative way to start up the conversation.



"What do you mean by that?, who told you that children hate?, how did you come to that conclusion?" he looked at her with pity.



"Am sorry, I know this is not the best way to start it up, it's just that I have suffered so much that the only thing in my mind now is that children hate me" she smiled trying hard to mask the tears that gathered in her eyes.



"that shouldn't be the reason for you to conclude that children hate you, they are gift from God and they come at the appointed time" he advised.




"but mine is different, they have been coming, but when they come, they don't stay, I always miscarry them at the third month, I just don't know what is wrong with me" she looked away as the tears started dropping.



"We will have to run a test on you to know what the problem is, some women have what we know as hot womb, once the get pregnant, they miscarry it due to the hotness of the womb, when we get you tested, I will know what the problem is" he concluded jotting something down on the book in front of him.




"When will the result of the test be ready?" she asked.



"In an hour time, which means you will have to wait"


"Okay then"







1 HOUR LATER



"Hello sir, good day sir" Korede greeted as soon as Mr Humphrey picked up.




"How are you doing Korede?" he asked.



"Sir, you will have to come down to Nigeria as soon as possible" he said hastily.



"What happened?" Mr Humphrey asked getting scared.



"Sir, it is about Evelyn, she just left the hospital, I ran some tests on her and I found out many things" He muttered.




"And what did you find out?" he asked again.





"Sir, all those miscarriages she had was as a result of an abortion pill, judging from the fact that she is so desperate to have children, I know she didn't take those drugs, someone fed her with it" he completed.



"Who would try such rubbish" Mr Humphrey thundered.



"Sir, that is not all" Korede spoke up again.


"What is it again?"



"I also found out that she doesn't have a womb, her womb has been removed without her knowledge, you have to come down to Nigeria sir, I can't do it all alone" he said closing his eyes.
