Oh no worries..."sir" is a term used as a form of respect in the American culture.... (although, historically, it has been labeled a controversial term....)
But I look at it as an endearing form of respect.
It's basically likened to you guys' use of the word "oga".
Aren't you a "boss"...lol?
Anyhow, I could tell you were young...lol...with all due respect wink
You know, it's not a bad thing to mature in age. With age "should " come wisdom.
Of course, you do know the other alternative to growing "older" unfortunately embarassed

hmm! i can see, you are very "old school" in a sexy and cool way

sometimes, oga is used together with sir, in the military or some settings, you will hear "oga sir", or sir or oga, it depends on the context you are using it.

Oga means "senior" for someone in a position of authority but anyway, nowadays, anybody can be called an Oga by showing "boys small love"
when you show "boys small love" the amount of oga and sir, you will receive from boys on the street and the police, will "burst your head"smiley

just do an experiment, in case, you get to Nigeria, just give some people money and see how you change from "aunty" to "madam" grin grin

anyway, i am a new school boss that does not demand "sir" in public and office settings except "in the other room" hahahahaa, i am just joking

it is true that it is not a bad thing to mature in age, anyway, i am from the school of thought that believes that maturity has to do with the mind rather than with age and physical appearance. maybe with age comes experience but not necessarily wisdom.

Ok...I appreciate that explanation. I didn't know all of that...very useful information. That's kinda what I thought when I saw the word used to refer to lots of particular guys here on N.L.
I just assumed that some were "older" and some were not (for various reasons)...and it seems that I was partially right.
Oh...well I'll take any positive greeting....as long as it's positive.
Yes..your very last paragraph is correct...

i wont say it is white supremacy, it is long gone, .......they are now where the corrupt go to show their wealth while the pastors and imams bless them. parent who suppose to be an example to their children are just not concerned. personal and moral responsibility is what is missing,.......efforts to live by those standards.

It is like, we are now ancestraly disconnected, with adopted ancestors in far away lands, that we can only read about in Books.

For hundreds of years Europe experienced what you are now seeing in Lagos. We are now 2nd Europeans.

Moral responsibility gradually ended where Sin and Repent gained ground.

As i have written before, NL is not a good method to judge Nigerians or to know how Nigeria works, most people just troll themselves and have fun. dont get me wrong, you can get some good info here but most people here are trolls

there is a big difference between how Nigerians behave online and offline.

I surely hope it isn't. I have had some very tough times on here...some which don't want to stay resting in peace.
Sometimes I want to just "run" from this site and never look back. But I'm protected...and will be okay.
BUT, I have learned soooo much more about Nigeria since joining here. I don't feel clueless. I doubt if I would have ever learned as much or been as motivated if I hadn't stumbled on this site.
I feel a small connection to the country through here.
I will definitely be able to judge the behavior of offline vs. online folks once I visit.
One guy was honest about the fact that he lives a "fake" lifestyle on here.

Anhow, I just feel as if I will have much more awareness about the country when I visit. Life won't be as "strange" cause of my knowledge of the culture through N.L.

just curious, what are some of the tough times you had on NL?

it seems every guy here wants to get a piece of meat of you through the Christian route, using your religion to manipulate you. i guess the sudden interest in you is because you are an half african-american lady. in their mind, you are the (JJC) of NL. (JJC)- jolly just come meaning a Naive person.(i myself like african-American women not the ghetto type, they are always fit and with a good ass)

This is an anonymous site, people can be whatever they wanna be, so expect the fake life, it is a common phenomenon not only in Nigeria but all over the world, you can choose to be what you wanna be and act the way you want.

NL is very resourceful to people who want to find information and know where and how to get it.

i am sure you must have been very familiar with the constant tribal abuse and fight here, funny enough in real life, these same set of people act normal and can't even say those words, it is normal in the anonymous world.

i am sure, if you are on youtube or and other American site, you must have had a heart attack when reading comments, it is even worst there, as a user, you just have to have a thick skin and know how to filter information.

is that your dog on your profile, i am not an expert, what breed is that?

Let me not even go there.
Not every guy....but I get it that I'm a target simply cause I'm in the U.S...
I would have to slither around through Nairaland as a "fake" person in order to not be a target.
But that's not me..
Anyhow, I had said I wanted to enter into 2019 with a clean slate...this is gonna be an awesome year!
It has been good so far...my "joy" won't be stolen.

What gets me the most is the tribalism.
Oh my goodness...it seems that Yoruba's hate Igbo's with a passion. I don't see any hatred toward the Hausa's. I don't know much about the other several tribes.
All I read is "Igbos" and "afonjas".... "skull-miners" and "419 fraudsters".
I knew immediately that "Igbos" meant Igbo cause they have a uniquely and distinctly shaped forehead...
But the hatred is so deep....

I've read every type of comment one could think of on American websites...
That's why I was shocked to see such similarities in comments on here. Some are ridiculously hilarious , and some make me mad, and others are just plain truth.
But you are definitely right.
People can become whomever behind a glass screen..where there's no accountability.

He is one of my sister's dog and is a black and white Pomeranian. Isn't he gorgeous? I was holding him and he put his paw in his mouth. He looked like he was gonna cry...but he likes being held and cuddled.
He's a small dog, weighs about 13 lbs. and is about 3 years old. He's extremely loving and very athletic.
I am a dog lover...they are truly man's best friend.
But I've read numerous times that in the Calabar area, dog is a delicacy lipsrsealed

The one guy was talking about "kneeling" to greet elders. That is mainly a Yoruba tradition from what I have learned. So in Lagos, would I be expected to do that since it is predominately Yorubaland?

Is Abuja a more equal mixture of Yoruba and Igbo?
I know the Hausa's are mainly in the North.
What above the other tribes..and where they base?

anyway, the Igbo hates the Hausas and vice versa online and offline, this is because of the civil war in 1967 and the event that led to it.

there are some truth in whatever the trolls do talk about each other tribes, just like we have profiles of crime according to race in the US like wise in Nigeria, we do, every tribe is guilty of crimes for example, the igbos are known for being couriers for hard-drugs and online fraud(419), the yorubas for online fraud(419), the edos(benin) for human trafficking and prostitution while the hausa for boko-haram, these things are true but dont take that for face value on nairaland, this is just to troll each other, in real life, many people do not talk about it.

I am not into dogs, I love them from afar and don't like to have one, if I was to have one, maybe a German shepherd but I am very familiar with chiwawa that is because my ex did have one, it took me a long time to adapt. your sister's dog is cute but wont love to have her near me.

dog is eaten not only in Calabar(cross river state), but also in Akwa-Ibom, Ondo state and Ogun state and some other places, it is grilled and served with cold and fresh palm wine. in ATR, for those that practise it religiously, Dog is used to give a sacrificial offer to OGUN(the god of iron)

in respect to greetings,in lagos, nobody cares if you kneel down to greet elders or not. don't go about kneeling down greeting people, you will be looked upon as a JJC. lagos is a multi-cultural city, so you greet people like you greet in the US, you are not yoruba, so dont try to impress, just act normal. you are not going to lagos to marry a yoruba, maybe when you are doing your marriage, you might have to kneel down but apart from that, act normal like you do in the US. grin grin

Abuja is in the middle of Nigeria and a federal capital city, so both hausa, yoruba, igbo and all other tlive lives there but Gwari people are the ordinary inhabitant of the land. because of abuja closeness to the north, so you will see a lot of northerners there, the place is just for politics just like how washington DC is,the economical strength of Nigeria is lagos.

in the north, there is middle belt and their is core north which is called Arewa, middle belt people are not hausa but the core north are hausa, fulani, kanuri, shuwa arab and other minority groups. both the middle belt and north lingua franca is hausa

middle belt-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_Belt
core north(Hausa/ fulani)- Sokoto, Kano, Zamfara, Katsina, Jigawa, Bauchi and part of Gombe and Kaduna
core north- )kanuri)- borno state, yobe state

Nigeria is not only Yoruba, igbo and hausa, there are many Minority groups in the background, those three groups are just the largest.

Dog is a delicacy in a few other places. Calabar people are just unfortunate to be flag bearers, lol. Among Yorubas it's the Ondo people that get the sticker but they are not the only ones that eat it. To Muslims eating dogs is considered unclean.

Traditionally, male Yorubas prostrate while females kneel to greet elders. These days men just bow and women bend their knees. Google the controversial image of Theresa may genuflecting to the queen of England to understand how women greet their elders in Yoruba land. Of course not with a hand shake as in the picture. It is not seen as respectful to most Yoruba elders for a younger person to extend their hand first for a handshake. They expect you to wait for them to do so first . Although, you should be the first to greet when you meet an elder. Lagos is cosmopolitan so you may choose to or not to genuflect. What I think is generally acceptable is to add "sir" and "ma" when you greet them and just generally be courteous in the European or American sense.

I was raised in Abuja but I am from and had my university education in the west. In Abuja, after English and pidgin English, the most spoken language is Hausa. Although it is our capital city, it is geographically northern. All the sates surrounding it are geo-politically northern sates.

However, it is the most truly Nigerian city in the country as virtually every group is very well represented.
Before it became our capital, government starting from the '80s, began relocating civil servants from every state of the country to work here. So the city has maintained that national character ever since.
I wish every place in the country were like Abuja in the way you have a mix of every group.

There are too many tribes to talk about. Here are some dominant ones and the regions they live. These are according to their geopolitical zones.

South-South
Ikwere (linguistically classified as igboid)
Izon or Ijaw
Edo
Urhobo
Itsekiri (linguistically classified as Yoruboid)

North-central
Nupe
Igala (linguitically classified as Yoruboid)
Gbagyi
Igbira

North-east
Kanuri
Jukun

Each one of these groups have their unique identities culture and languages separate from the three major languages.

As the title suggest I am an Akata. I intend to relocate temporarily for various reasons. I basically would like to explore different opportunities and build a network in Nigeria. I have a background in IT and was considering enrolling in an University to further my studies and build a social network. I was wondering are Nigerian degrees recognized in America or would it be a waste of time ? I have a decent knowledge of IT and programming mostly self taught and certs. I am not too considered w/ school but rather the network it would provide.

Let us steer this thread back to the original intent. Funny bro, the word Alaka was original used for females. Lol. Perhaps, it has a wider scope which includes males now. Very funny. Akata for a male? Lol.

There are colleges/universities I can recommend which you will find interesting.
1. Covenant University (A christian university owned by one of the leading pastors - Bishop Oyedepo). The university is known for an excellent approach to research. You should use the following phrases to google it:
A) Covenant University Nigeria
B) LandMark University Nigeria (a sister university by the same man, Bishop Oyedepo)
C) Living Faith Bishop Oyedepo
D) Winners Chapel Bishop Oyedepo
E) Covenant University Nigeria Ranking
Using the above phrases, you will learn about the university and also see if the christianity culture in the college fits you or not.

But here are highlights about the university which can help you:
1. The informatic and computer department is good
2. It is a good university which is close to Lagos. Situated in the next state to Lagos (Ogun State). Located in a small town and rapidly developing town called Otta. That is the same town ex president Olusegun Obasanjo lives. His Hilltop mansion is situation there. And Bishop Oyedepo really tried developing the town.

2. University of Lagos
It is situated right inside the hustling and bubling part of the city called Akoka. The university is one of the best place you can connect with different kinds of people. The present vice president Yemi Osinbajo is an alumni of the university and also a former dean of the law faculty of the university. The school is known for its high class. However, the only disadvantage is that it is a public school which is affected by political issues of the country. Presently, the teachers of all public universities are on strike, and the school is affected too.

3. Yaba College of Techology:
Well, many might over look this institution. But trust me, if you want a small college which is like 3 mins drive to the University of Lagos and situated in a better and more lucrative area than even the University of Lagos, think of YabaTech. The standard of education may not be what you really want, but if you need people to hook you up, think of the place. This college is even older than university of Lagos. It is the best polytechnic in Nigeria.

4. University of Ibadan.
Yeah! Though, it is far from Lagos a bit but situated in the same region Lagos is. Well, I included this great university because I Americans do attend the university. Well, the ones I know about registered in the department of languages and culture. Lol. Well, that may not be your interest but it is worth checking its IT department. Why? The university surely knows how to take care of foreigners. Trust me on this, you will feel at home there.

5. Then, there is the American University, Nigeria. You should google it. Founded by the ex vice president of Nigeria and currently contesting as the president of Nigeria. He is Atiku Abubarkar. If you get to the political section of this forum, you will be dazed with the words"Atikulate" or "Atikulating" (from the infinity: articulate). Read about him and his business empire and strategies. Then, see if his school suits you. You will need to digest both the good and bad reviews about him and the school. But I can assure you that you will get something nice there.

Instead of going to conventional schools, you may look into computer/IT certification centers. Check NIIT, Aptech, hmmmm which other? Hmmmm. Ok you may really need IT guys opinion to get you the best center that suits you. Yeah! I am sure someone might give you hints here.

Ok. You can get info and make further researches from the following sources:

1. Start with the US embassy in Lagos and Abuja. Google them and get their phone numbers. They are always helpful. Infact, you will be surprised how much you can learmln from them. I think this is the error you made in Ghana. You went to the wrong place. You should have started with the US embassy in Âccra. Really, Ghana is not that bad to that extent. There are noises everywhere. Also, one man's food is another's poison. To you culture is noise, but the "akata lady", (my apologies), it is her interest. You know what you want, so it is your job to filter out noises. Actually, info is embeded in noise.

2. Whatsapp and Telegram groups:
Try to check the information, computer, and technology part of this forum. You will be able to get groups you can join. Infact, you may need to create a thread too, but just avoid introducing yourself as akata bla bla bla. You may not even tell anyone you are American, just ask.

3. The hot cake area now is "Digital Marketing" in Nigeria. Everyone wants to market his business online. Programmers are writing more codes in that direction, developing more apps in the area. If you can bring more value into this area, you will cash out enough reward at the end of the tunnel. You may try to get whatsapp or Telegram digital marketing group. I know one that the admins are just super. They reveal all top secrets, breakimg into emerging markets, etc. There are many Nigerians in diaspora in the group. Unfortunately, the group is filled up and no one is ready to leave. Lol. There are similar groups like that which are tools you can use. You may need to search the technology/computer section of this forum if you can get. Also, I will not rule out getting such info from the US embassy in Lagos or Abuja.

An interesting part of the exact location of Covenant University is that it is situation right on the highway which leads to one of the borders between Nigeria and Republic of Benin. The name of the border is "Idiroko border". You should take notes of all these names because these are the information you will need to check and double check what are good and not good for you. I can only give you a balanced account of what to expect.

I also have done some limited research and was torn between Lagos and Abuja. I am wondering which area would better suit my interest. I understand Abuja is more affluent but Lagos is a commercial hub with a lot going on. Im not timid or scared , I've lived in NY in rough parts so high density areas of black people do not intimidate me ( Im no tough guy ,either). What I am not interested in are any forms of "pan africanism" or any village experiences and wearing dashiki's ( no disrespect ) I just find those type of endeavors a waste of time and laughable. I've been to Ghana and did not enjoy it because of that reason . Too much emphasis on " cultural " shit , I respect African culture and can appreciate it , but it is yours . I do not seek to be something I am not. Too much tribalism and other political bullshit only confuses me and Im too old 4 that shit. My ONLY purpose in being in Nigeria is purely economical . I don't have time to waste on endeveours which will add no value to my life or the people i come in contact with.
You ribbed me off with the "danshiki" slang. grin O boy! It will fit you well while you are using your laptop. grin Bro, guys here are lovers of those things you really do not like. We not only wear such in villages but guys have modernized such, and even have blended them with your western attires. Bro, let me lend you an advice. I was focused in my days abroad while I was a student, but I had to embrace the culture of my host. I guess this is what Mobilia is trying to tell you. Do not feel discouraged about what you experienced in Ghana. This time, try to achieve a good network from all researches you are making. Of course your goal is the economic value from it. But look at your strategy, you want to use education to break in. That is smart. It was what I used too during my time away. But neglecting or turning back on the culture of your host can be dangerous. Not saying you must make it a priority, but that is a powerful combo with education to break in.

If you really want to network well knowing fully well you are new, Lagos might be your best bet. I am not ruling out Abuja. If Mark Zuckerburg decided to locate his network in Yaba, Lagos (just 10 mins walk from Yabatech and the University of Lagos), then, you should take the city serious. Also, google is active in Lagos too. Google is trying hard to break fully into Nigeria. Personally for me, Abuja is the diplomatic headquaters of Nigeria just like how what Geneva is to Switzerland, and, Zurich like Lagos is the business center. While you are focused with your intent, meeting new people everyday is what you must not ignore. Again, consult the American embassy. As a matter of fact, you may need to report there as soon as you arrive. Very necessary bro. Go straight to the embassy, do not talk to anyone, but tell the cab driver (there is Uber service here) to take you there directly. Many people will be there including thugs, just look for a security personnel of the embassy. They are always on uniform and the name "US embassy is always on their chest". Tell him/her your mission, and you will be allowed in. Yeah, you must go with your US international passport. And please, do not release it to anyone. Hold it in your hand while showing the security personnel.

I would greatly appreciate any feedback which I could take into consideration b4 making my move. I intend to travel there by March for 2 weeks just to touch the ground 1st b4 I make a decision. I tried searching YouTube but all of the Akata youtubers seem to be naive clowns to me so I take their opinions w/ "a grain of salt" as far as NIgeira.

I dont mean to come off disrespectful because I hold Nigerians in high esteem its just rather the narrative of the returning Akata which I hold in disdain. I don't want to be confused w/ some lost puppy looking to return and find his long lost culture and heritage. I have a culture and background o my own ( carribbean descent) so I can appreciate yours as I hold onto mines.

*General Note*
1. Nigerians cannot use Nigerian universities certificates to gain employment easily in the US. In fact, we always make sure we have american degrees if we want to be taken serious there.
2. Most computer certifications are same everywhere. If you attend classes and take them here, they are same as the ones in your country.
3. In my opinion, those who want to study African languages find our contemporary universities more useful. I think mobilia should even consider it more since it is her field of study. It will definitely set her apart even in the US.
4. A way to use our certificate is to further education in the US. Yes, let us say you have a bachelor degree here, you can use the certificates to do masters. Same with using a masters degree certificate to enrol for phD there. In this case, it is a wise decision.
5. If you want to just network and you do not mind just having a degree in IT here, it is ok too. It will set you apart from all applicants of a job in Africa, most especially in West Africa.
6. Also, it is a bonus to your resume that you can easily adapt to any situation outside your home. Most international employers and business associates look at this. It has helped me countless of times. It is always a strength I talk about in any interview.

All work and no play makes Jack a dullard. All money and no fun makes Harry a re.tard. I advice you to be like Mark, the facebook boss who explored the business and the fun sides of Lagos and Abuja. This is the true way you can easily break in nicely. The man sitting down next to you on a beer table might be the key to taking you to the next level.

From me now is Aloa!

WORLDPEACE:

Gbagyi
Igbira

North-east
Kanuri
Jukun

Each one of these groups have their unique identities culture and languages separate from the three major languages.

why did you call yourself that? do you even know the meaning?
Re: Akata Planning To Relocate To Nigeria by Nobody: 10:57pm On Jan 28, 2019
I Just don't understand why the op choose to refer to himself as an akata [ it originated from the yoruber tribe, and because of that, raises red flags] even i as a Nigerian find that word very offensive even if it's not directed at me. @Op you call yourself that but I think you should stop it cuz the meaning is very bad.

I call myself it so you would know exactly who or what I am. Nigerians use the word so much in the US I just embrace it. Whatever it means doesnt bother me much because I am different. I am secure in who I am and any one who knows me or are around me , will respect me. So I find it makes others more uncomfortable to hear me say it from my mouth 4 whatever reason. I look at it as letting people know the cats out the bag. I understand and know where we stand and how we are perceived .

I was reading your comment and I have to correct you on something. Oh, before I continue I am black American not an Akata. OK, to continue, the term African booty scracther was created 80 years ago by the racist Walt Disney Company. It was meant to be derogatory towards black people.

On one of their cartoons they had African Cannibals cooking another African tribe in a big black pot under a hot fire outside. As they were cooking the men they circled the pot singing in mumbo jumbo with big giant earrings in their noses, and humongous red lips while scratching their booties. So the Jews are responsible for the term *African Booty Scratcher* not black Americans.

I agree with you about the use of that term only being used by kids, heck I was called that as a child and called my friends it as well, there wasn't any crying and whining only laughter because it sounded so stupid. I had forgotten about the term until I came to this site with the over exaggerated use of the term coming from people on this site who has never been to America complaining about black Americans calling them ABS, you know, the my cousin's uncle's, girlfriend nephew's sister he said she said mess.
