Movie Title: Lionheart

Year: 2018
Cast: Genevieve Nnaji, Nkem Owoh, Pete Edochie, Onyeka Onwenu, Kanayo O Kanayo, Phyno

Genre: Drama

Industry: Nollywood

Time: 1h 36 mins

Producer: Chinny Onwugbenu

Director: Genevieve Nnaji

Plot:
A young woman has to save the family-owned company, after they face bankruptcy. With the support of her rather charismatic uncle, they race against time to ensure a rival company does not acquire their company.

Review:

This movie marked the directorial debut of Nollywood icon, Genevieve Nnaji, and going by the boundaries it broke, you could say the debut was indeed successful.

So, let's see what about LionHeart prompted one of the biggest streaming sites in the world, Netflix, to acquire it for a whooping $3.8 million.

Well, first of all, we have to give props to the cinematography. It was top notch, honestly, who knew Enugu could be this beautiful? Someone should flog the likes of Ugezu J. Ugezu, and those other local Nollywood movie producers for always showing us dilapidated Enugu. LionHeart brought out the beauty of the city of Enugu, and there was also some time to shed a spotlight on the ancient city of Kano.

The storyline was simple.... Way too simple by Nigerian standards and this is probably why some people still think there was nothing wow about it, but beyond the simplicity, it failed to live up to the common stereotypes of Nigerian movies in so many ways. I mean, how odd was it that Chief Obiagu (Pete Edochie) fell ill, and it wasn't because one wicked relative in the village had called his name three times, broken an egg and spat on a piece of kola? Or that his brother (Nkem Owoh) was invited to supervise the company in his absence, and he didn't make a play to muscle out his daughter, Adaora (Nnaji) from the company? Even more, what is the likelihood of an Igbo famiky seeking a merger with an Hausa one to save their company? You mean, Chief Obiagu (Edochie) had a son (Phyno) and somehow, it was the daughter running his company? Even more, the son was musician, and he hadn't managed to get himself disowned? And you mean, KOK did not make his money through rituals?

There were so many cliches that just weren't allowed to fester, and for that, I have to give the movie some kudos. I also liked the promotion of indigenous Nigerian languages; the movie was quite realistic in a sense. The Obiagu family were able to converse in both Igbo and English in most of the scenes, and when it called for it, conversations were also held in Hausa, notably, when Chief Obiagu (Edochie) spoke to Alhaji Maikano, it was quite surprising to find that Pete Edochie was so fluent in Hausa.

I also enjoyed the flirty relationship Adaora (Nnaji) came to have with Hamza Maikano (Sani Mu'azu). Of course, the movie didn't delve into any relationship they had, but we saw signs of some potential if we ever get a part 2, Hamza was smitten with Adaora, who seemed rather shy around him. It was adorable to watch and I really enjoyed the acting by Mu'azu. When I first heard him speak, I thought, "Thank God they found an actual Hausa guy with the perfect Hausa accent" instead of the usual make-shift Hausa people with some funny version of the incredibly posh 'Malo' accent. If you've ever heard educated Hausa people speak, you'll get my drift, Hamza was all that and then some, total heartthrob grin

I also liked the progress of the story, I liked that every scene had it's place, even the supposedly irrelevant scenes (like that of Peter Okoye grin), if Adaora had never come to him to help raise money to bail the company, her uncle (Nkem Owoh) might have never come across Hamza Maikano almost getting scammed by some of Arinze's (Okoye) boys, and saved him. That act helped greatly, when they needed to form an alliance with the Maikano family.

I also liked that there was no predictability to the story. It was very much different from the usual Nollywood movies, and I see why it didn't quite click for many Nigerians.

One thing though, it felt brief. It was like everything happened so fast, the movie might have taken over one hour, but at the end of it, I thought "Well, that was fast"....maybe I wanted more. Maybe I just wanted to see if we would get a HamDaora cheesy....*sigh*....i can only wish cry

A big question mark the movie raised was the fact that the Obiagu family could not access a loan from any banks despite how large the company had gotten. We are made to believe the rival company, headed by Kanayo O. Kanayo's character, may have blocked their avenues, but come on! If Otedola is seeking a loan, Adenuga would not be able to block every avenue he has to get one, bad as e be.

On to advert placements, well, Genevieve did very well in promoting Enugu and Kano state, but she also promoted Innoson vehicles in the movie. It didn't seem so obvious, and I liked that about it. Subtle advert placements are bae, the producers of Banana Island Ghost should take notes.

All in all, LionHeart is a decent movie, each cast member brought originality to the screen. I liked how proverbs were tossed around, as is expected of any movie Pete Edochie features in, I liked the lesson of family and loyalty above all. I liked the message of unity as well, with the merging of the Obiagu and Maikano families to defeat the rival company. I enjoyed the original, authentic Nigerian accent, not the British-American accents we are forced to listen to these days. it also had a number of memorable quotes, top of which for many was one by Pete Edochie:

"Your continued presence is an extension of your irrelevance"

Rating: 6.5/10

The movie needed the guidance of a proffesional accountant.

perhaps grin

But the thing with most movies are that they tend to exaggerate some things. I did have a grouse with the fact that a company that large and established found it difficult to access a bank loan and could not get a longer period with which to raise the money. Thanks for reminding me, that was a large question mark

So a slightly above average vanity project like The Greatest Showman is the greatest musical ever made?

Greater than the Wizard of Oz? Greater than Singing in The Rain? Greater than Mary Poppins?

I wouldn't even rate it as being anywhere close to 2004's Chicago.

Perhaps you should stick to reviewing your beloved mediocre Nollywood hogwash. At least the makers of those movies operate on the same low level mental wavelength as you do.

Nice one from Safarigirl. Thank God I didn't waste money watching Chief Daddy. grin

Regarding criticism meted against you, well, it is expected. But folks saying that she's wasting her time forget that Nairaland has had growth and development of enterprises. From Lawyer the real estate investigator to jraushub (career consulting) to various auto dealers and bloggers. Someone has to start from somewhere.

Kudos again.

My friend reviewed the chief daddy movie on her website and according to her it's a great movie. The fact that she loves it doesn't mean that someone else will. I don't know why people don't want others to have opinions. Now I am curios to watch the movie, how do I download it? I couldn't find any download link online.

I saw the movie on Netflix and it wasn't that bad, the last time I watch Nigerian movies was like 17/18yrs ago. I'm not that type that is glued to mediocre, I like movies that are out of this world, movies that will keep me on my sit waiting for every scenes with much interest, perhaps, this is why I love watching Hollywood movies. but this one wasn't bad, it's a little cool.

Haha haha haha grin wow!

I've watched this movie. Only that it's not your version. The version I watched was titled Carnage and starred Christopher Waltz, Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster, and John C. Reilly.

And yes, my version was a 2011 American movie and even if I don't know when this oddly similar 4 people-cast Nigerian version was released, Nigerian filmmakers penchant for (poor) imitation means there's only one possible answer.

Even though you did a terrific job with the review, I'll pass. My Nollywood hiatus is not ending anything soon I guess grin

Better maintain that hiatus for your sanity sake... It's all nothing but over-hyped thrash!!!... I tried viewing "Lionheart" to see if things had improved, and got terribly offended midway.

Funny, I feel the same way about a lot of Hollywood movies.

Anyway, I'm glad the Nollywood audience transcends Nigerians and their false sense of importance. I was glad to notice foreigners mentioning Nigerian movies as the go-to for movies with black characters, aside BET movies. A lot of people have tired of Hollywood and their lack of inclusion in their movies and would just prefer to see more characters they can identify with.

Movie Title: The Visit

Year: 2016

Cast: Nse-Ikpe Etim, Blossom Chukwujekwu, Femi Jacobs, Bhaira Mcwizu

Genre: Drama

Industry: Nollywood

Time: 2h 21m

Plot:

Two exrremely different couples who share a compound, are brought together in unlikely circumstances. In the process, secrets are uncovered and they learn more of each other in the space of one day

Review

This is one Nigerian movie I can recommend for anyone. There are so many good things to take away from this movie.

Let me start with the storyline, believe it or not, this movie had just four characters. You would wonder what four people could do in two hours, but they did far more than what a 20-man cast could ever accomplish. The story of a perfect couple, clashing with a dysfunctional couple isn't very familiar in Nollywood. Even more, what were the odds that the perfect couple would end up being the actual nutjobs and the nutjobs would turn out to be far better? I liked the spin of it all, I especially liked the whole idea of not judging a book by its cover, because the entire idea which was gotten at the beginning was turned on its head by the end.
This story was set in ONE location. 80% of it shot in one house and somehow, they made it work, both the cast and the producers.
Nse-Ikpe Etim shone, as always, playing the role of Ajiri, the crazy, nympho, marijuana-smoking wife of Lanre (Chukwujekwu), an equally crazy guy who happens to be a struggling music producer. Femi Jacobs was equally brilliant as Chidi, the somewhat caged husband of Eugenia, a perceived Stepford wife, who turned out to be anything but.

There were so many right things about this movie that it was hard to find the wrongs. It's 2 hours of your life, you will not regret wasting. The high points were rib-cracking and jaw-dropping and the cliffhanger in the end, was just right. While it gave room for more, it wasn't a frustrating end.
I would recommend The Visit for any lover of good movies, it is best watched when you have nothing else to go to and I can promise, there will be no regrets

Rating: 7/10

Play/Trowey: Definitely Play
This is one movie I will never get tired of watching. Nse Ikpe Etim is simply awesome. Her delivery as Ajiri a typical waffi girl was spot on. I liked how she could easily switch from Oprah to Kardi B in split seconds. One minute eloquent, next minute razz. Blossom didn't disappoint too. Great movie guys for those who are yet to see it

I will gladly overlook the condescension and thinly-veiled insult... Afterall, this is all banter. Nigeria movies suffer from unnecessary hype, biased and barely truthful reviews...
Amaka Igwe's Rattlesnake was slightly hyped but delivered superbly on all fronts, while keeping it real in the African sense. Maybe, Nollywood needs to get back to the drawing board, and quit believing her own hype. This is me being brutally honest, and not having a "false sense of importance"!
By the way, I felt the same dismal way about "Black Panther" too.

Movie Title: The Greatest Showman

Year: 2017

Cast: Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson

Genre: Musical, Drama

Industry: Hollywood

Time: 1h 44 min

Plot:
This movie tells the story of PT Barnum, the man who started the circus. It tells how PT Barnum, went from a poor, tailor's son to the owner of a circus; his trials and how he overcame them.

Review:

The Sound of Music has been hailed as an iconic musical and the best of the 20th century, well, The Greatest Showman is the greatest musical of this century so far and I might even add, better than TSM. Not only was EVERY song from this movie a hit, everything from the choreography, to the storyline and the acting was perfect.
The story is set in New York, in the early 20th century, we see how Barnum (Jackman) first met his love, Charity (Williams), as a child, he shows her a life he sees for their future, despite how poor he is at the time and how rich her family is. His father's death leaves him wandering the streets, however, he eventually grows older and seeks her hand in marriage. Her father grudgingly accepts and he takes her away, but Barnum isn't the rich man he thinks his wife deserves. Eventually, he comes up with the idea of gathering 'misfits' to form a show which people pay for. He enlists the help of rich kid, Phillip Carlyle (Efron) to help in hosting the shows. Phillip introduces him to Jenny Lind (Ferguson) an opera singer, who distracts him from his circus and nearly destroys his career and marriage
There are so many lessons to learn in this movie, whether it's the lesson of believing in each other, of seeing someone more for what they can add to your life, rather than what they look like, of never forgetting your roots, or of never paying attention to people's opinions, the lessons are inexhaustible. And each song tells a lesson, each song speaks to someone.
Watching the movie, can lift anyone's spirits. No matter how low you feel, The Greatest Showman will surely make you feel better.
This is another movie that was so good, there was hardly a fault. The one fault I did notice however, was a scene where he hopped on a train, the graphics were so poor, I could tell it was fake. However, it had little or no impact on the core of the movie.
Like I have told the over twenty people I have recommended the movie to, The Greatest Showman is the greatest musical you will see in a long time.

Rating: 9/10

Play/Trowey: Play a Gazillion times
One of the best movies in the year 2018. I like the humanity first message it passes and that no matter the imperfections we come with it has no power over what we truly want to be. The greatest highlights of this movie were the songs. I had to download all for the love of it. Great movie!!

Your opinions are interesting, especially concerning the musical TGS. I haven't seen too many movies in my life but I try. I find that, in order to appreciate the film industry worldwide better, it pays to look at its evolution. Watching icons like Westside story, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Casablanca, Taxi Driver, The Champ, The Usual Suspects,The Green Mile, Goodfellas, The Godfather, Gladiator, Shawshank Redemption, Forrest Gump, Up, Toy Story, Inside Out,Braveheart, Saving Private Ryan,Remember the Titans, 300,Ghost, The Rainman, Citizen Kane, Léon the Professional and a host of others (ok, maybe not all of them are so old and there are some pretty good animation movies too) just to mention a few gives you many mixed emotions. They may not all be that great but the storytelling and acting and dialogue are usually top-notch. The scores in these movies too and how they are used to great effect is simply wonderful. When you see how the industry has evolved over the decades and you still enjoy performances from actors long gone, you understand that Nollywood still has a lot to do.

Movies are usually a thing of personal preference. Even at that, a great movie regardless of genre is always a thing of joy to watch.

Nollywood does need to go back, like I mentioned in some of my reviews, the acting these days is robotic and fake.

After watching Igodo, State of Emergency and some movies from the early 2000's, yes, what we have now is mediocre at best, and a lot of attempts to tell American storied using African actors. No originality. A lot of the movies lack relatability as far as the average Nigerian is involved.

Most big budget movies are just movies with nice pictures and good-looking actors trying very hard to sound American. They can't even do a decent epic movie, because they must throw in the luxury cars and high end fashion in their movies

perhaps grin

But the thing with most movies are that they tend to exaggerate some things. I did have a grouse with the fact that a company that large and established found it difficult to access a bank loan and could not get a longer period with which to raise the money. Thanks for reminding me, that was a large question mark
Yes. Also the auditors were trying to make jest out of a serious matter.
The two guys at the back of the lead auditor said In igbo; that they were being owed, which didn't make sense to me.
The auditor should have been given the title of consultants. It would depict what they were doing. This would have been a different case if they were internal auditors.
Other issue I notice was that for such a company not having a an accountant or a finance officer surprised me. Jenny is head of logistics of the company and also was doing finance functions at the same time.
They ought to have been guided properly by professional accountant.

like I said, movies don't get the specifics a lot.

It's the same thing with movies that are about police officers or doctors. If you get a real police officer or doctor to review them, they just laugh and tell you that the movie is a joke compared to the real thing.

They can only get the specifics of their acting, but they can never fully get the specifics of the profession like the professional would. It would be tantamount to asking an accountant to act. He won't do it as good as an actor would.

But I understand your perspective

Saw The Sound Of Music the other day and the music still sounded good in my ears. it turns 54 this year and was still had great replay value.
Julie Andrews was made to be Maria.
I haven't seen the greatest showman because i don't trust Hollywood these days. They seem to be running out of ideas. You should review classics too. Shutter Island or Vertigo would be a fine start.
