Thanks man. Nice update
Re: A Fatal Love {Sequel to 'The Sugar Mum'} by LoveToRead: 4:55pm On Jan 25, 2019
This must be the work of the devil, I reasoned. All these while that I was home alone, all alone, Enny did not bother to come. I had been praying and longing for her coming, she did not. But just one night that I decided to cool the tension in me, that was the night she chose to come. See how the devil works!

Calm down, I told myself. Calm down. I sat down and watched the news on the television. I was soon calm. I thought over what was happening. Well, Enny was the cause, I reasoned again. Some days ago, I had asked her when she would be coming and she had not given any definite day. If she had said she would be coming that weekend, I would have got myself ready.

Then, she misplaced the keys. Why did she misplace the keys?

Everything seemed to be working against her coming back to the house. That was why I believed it was the work of the devil. About an hour
later, I tried Enny’s number again, and it went through. The problem was she refused to pick the call again. I sighed, feeling indignant.

Another hour’s time, Lara called my line.

‘Hello, darling.’

‘Hello, Lara. See, something happened that yesterday.’

‘What happened?’ There was concern in her voice.

‘Enny was here in the evening. I was told she misplaced her keys, so she could not access the house. She tried to call me, but my phone was
switched off. She called me this afternoon, and was mightily angry again.’

‘Oh God, I’m awfully sorry about that.’

I sighed. ‘Now, I’ve been calling her lines to explain things to her but she would not pick her calls.’
‘Ops, sorry.’

I paused.

‘Maybe you should keep trying to call her,’ Lara suggested.

‘Yes, I’ll do that.’

‘Okay, I’ll call again.’

‘Thanks, Lara.’

Surprisingly, some minutes to four o’clock, Enny called back.

‘Thank God you called,’ I said. ‘Enny, baby, you’ve got to listen to me.’

‘Don’t try to deceive her,’ a woman’s voice bawled. ‘Why are you doing this, Alex? Why’re you bent on wrecking this marriage?’ It was Enny’s
mother. I would recognize that whip-like voice anywhere.

‘What? What’re you saying, ma?’

‘You know what I’m talking about,’ she went on. ‘We’re trying to settle this matter, but there you are, running after prostitutes!’

‘What!? I never ran after any prostitute, ma.’

‘So why were you not at home yesterday? Why did you lodge with a woman yesterday? You’re the cause of this separation, and you’re the one
making life difficult for Enny. Why don’t just leave her alone and concentrate on your other women?’

‘It’s not as you think, ma…’

‘Leave Eniola alone!’

With that, she cut the line. I was exasperated and furious. What was all this? Why was the woman the one deciding for Enny instead of leaving

her to decide for herself? Why was she pouring fuel into the fire? Honestly, I was beginning to detest the gut of that woman!

I know Alex has messed up a lot... But enny's mum is starting to get irritating, it's as if she doesn't want her daughter to remain married.

With that, she cut the line. I was exasperated and furious. What was all this? Why was the woman the one deciding for Enny instead of leaving her to decide for herself? Why was she pouring fuel into the fire? Honestly, I was beginning to detest the gut of that woman!

I lay on the sofa and dozed on and off. When it was about six p.m., Lara called.

‘Hello, darling. How did it go? Have you been able to talk to Enny?’

‘No. It was her mother that called, and she accused me of going after prostitutes.’

‘What? That’s serious. What will you do, now?’

‘Honestly I don’t know. It is her mother that is making decisions for her; that’s the problem.’

‘Oh, sorry about that, Alex.’

‘It’s alright. A man must be ready to face challenges.’

‘I like that spirit,’ Lara said. ‘Keep it up.’

‘Thanks, Lara.’

‘If you’re so lonely, you can come over.’

I sighed.

‘Did you hear me?’

‘Sure, I did.’

‘Alex, you don’t deserve to be abandoned. I’ll be waiting for you.’

‘Thanks, Lara. I’ll come over there.’

I sighed as the line went dead. Since Enny had taken the offensive stance, I decided there was no point I would be brooding over anything. Lara
would give the consolation for now. I picked the shirt and the suit I would be wearing on Monday morning and took them along to Lara’s place,
since it was most likely I would sleep over in her apartment.

It was past seven in the evening when I stepped inside her apartment.

‘Oh, darling.’ She came to hug and kiss me like a woman who had terribly missed her lover.

She took the bag that contained my effects from me and took them to the bedroom.

I sat down on a sofa in the sitting-room.

‘What will you have, darling?’ she asked as soon as she reemerged.

I shook my head. ‘Not now. Later.’

She came to sit by my side. ‘So sorry about the whole thing, Alex.’

‘It’s okay. My grouse is it is that her mother that is deciding for her.’

‘Some women are like that.’

I shook my head. ‘Honestly I’m pissed off with the woman. Can you imagine she accused me of going after prostitutes?’

‘She speaks out of ignorance, Alex. Don’t mind her.’

‘That woman is going to wreck that marriage, if care is not taken.’

Lara said nothing to that.

I sat back on the sofa and stared absent mindedly at the t.v.

‘Don’t be so stressed up, darling,’ Lara offered.

I closed my eyes. Her hand ran over my chest and she unbuttoned the shirt.

‘Are you angry with me?’ she asked.

I opened my eyes. ‘You? No, of course.’

‘Well, you might say Lara caused all this.’

I grinned. ‘So, Enny and her mother expect that I should lock up myself in the house and remain a prisoner? Come on, I’ve done what a man
should do.’

She smiled. She liked that answer. Her hand ran over my chest again. ‘What you need now is a loving person that will soothe your nerves.’

I smiled and nodded.

‘Can you please close your eyes?’

I did as she said. She brought her mouth to mine again. Very slowly, we engaged in kissing. It became a deep one with her tongue exploring
everywhere that could be explored. I felt relaxed.

‘Are you better, now?’ she asked.

‘A bit,’ I answered.

She smiled. ‘Don’t worry, it will get better. Come.’

We went to the bedroom.

Two hours later, I lay next to her on the bed, holding her hand. Odd as it was, Lara had made me forget my remote and immediate worries.

‘A bit,’ I answered.

She smiled. ‘Don’t worry, it will get better. Come.’

We went to the bedroom.

Two hours later, I lay next to her on the bed, holding her hand. Odd as it was, Lara had made me forget my remote and immediate worries. We
were both naked under the bed spread. I sighed.

‘Don’t forget we’ve not eaten dinner,’ she reminded.

‘Yes, dinner. Maybe we can eat something light.’

‘Like what?’

‘Like noodles.’

She laughed. ‘That’s for kids.’

‘I like it.’

‘I don’t have it in the house. But I can buy some.’

‘Don’t let me bother you. You can prepare any other thing.’

‘There’s bread in the fridge, and there are eggs. We can have bread and fried eggs, or bread and tea.’

‘Let’s make it bread and tea.’

‘Alright.’ She got up and wore a satin night wear. ‘You can remain in bed,’ she said. ‘I’ll bring the meal here.’

‘Okay, dear. That’ll be romantic.’ She left me in the bedroom for the kitchen. I brought my phone and logged on the internet. I then checked all
my social media webpages.

Ten minutes later, Lara was back with bread and tea. She put them on a tray and set the tray on a stool. We sat on the bed and ate.

After the meal, she played some music on her phone as she lay in my arms on the bed again. That was what we did until she slept off. I
stopped the music and closed my eyes. I soon slept off too.

The scene was a harbor. I loitered round a speed boat. I wanted to take a pleasure ride across the river. It would be better I should go with my
love, but where was she?

Three ladies approached me. One of then turned out to be Steph. She was in their middle. They came to where I was standing by the boat.

The lady to Steph’s right was the first to speak. ‘He who the gods will destroy, they first make mad,’ she said.

‘Yes,’ the lady on the left said. ‘You’re like the one the gods will destroy, Alex.’

I looked at the two ladies. ‘Who’re you and what’re you talking about?’

‘We’re her friends,’ the lady to the right said, pointing at Steph. ‘You’ve hurt her so much. Why’re you so wicked to her?’

‘Me? Wicked? You’re making a mistake, lady. Steph here cannot say I’m wicked to her.’

‘Yes, you are,’ the lady to the left said. ‘After all she has done for you. She gave you her love. She gave you her virginity. She gave you a baby
boy. Why’re you so heartless?’

I shook my head. ‘Listen, you ladies are making a big mistake. Steph, don’t you just stand there and say nothing. Tell these ladies I’m not what
they say I am.’

‘But then, you are, Alex,’ the lady to the right said. ‘If you’re not, why d’you continue to treat Steph with disdain, after all the love she gives
you? Why d’you refuse to completely align yourself with her? Why d’you refuse to leave your other woman to join her?’

‘To make matter worse,’ the lady to the left continued. ‘Why’re you sleeping with another lady? Why’re you giving your love to another lady,
even after Steph has warned you to stop?’

I wanted to tell them to stop their ranting; that they had no right to question my behavior, but I could not. My tongue was stuck in my mouth.

‘You’ve sinned against her, against us. She’s too soft on you, but we, her friends will not allow you to get away with your iniquity.’

I was angry. Who the hell were they? Who gave them authority or power to question my propriety? I wanted to tell them to go tell to hell, but
again I could not say a word. I remained immobile.

‘This is our judgment, Alex. You will be afflicted. You will be afflicted almost to the point of death.’

I became angrier. Who the hell did they think they were? How dare they pronounce ‘judgment’ on me as if they were God? What nonsense!

But, I was bewildered when I realized that I could not say a word.

At five-thirty a.m., I woke up. I remembered the dream. Now, what kind of dream was that? This was the second time I would be having a
dream in which I was warned about my relationship with Lara. This second dream was worse, as there was a supposed pronouncement of
judgment. The dream looked so real, but it was all nonsense. How could Steph or her so-called friends think they could intimidate me?
