US Embassy Reacts To The Suspension And Replacement Of Chief Justice Of Nigeria by sgd: 3:13pm On Jan 26, 2019
“The Embassy of the United States is deeply concerned by the impact of the executive branch’s decision to suspend and replace the Chief Justice and head of the judicial branch without the support of the legislative branch on the eve of national and state elections.

We note widespread Nigerian criticism that this decision is unconstitutional and that it undermines the independence of the judicial branch. That undercuts the stated determination of government, candidates, and political party leaders to ensure that the elections proceed in a way that is free, fair, transparent, and peaceful – leading to a credible result.

We urge that the issues raised by this decision be resolved swiftly and peacefully in accordance with due process, full respect for the rule of law, and the spirit of the Constitution of Nigeria. Such action is needed urgently now to ensure that this decision does not cast a pall over the electoral process.”

The world is watching if the Senate will correct this God Forbid anomaly by the executive.

We are all scared of the dark precedence that will evolve from this.
Interestingly...the constitution is explicit on how to deal with a wayward president

Modified*

Upon all the shutdown in US.... uncle Sam has reopened with zero money. That is where a country's legislature put the president in his place.

The Senate president and speaker should stand firm and reject this ilegality.

Has everyone noticed that NO ONE or BODY has so far supported the President on this aberration of his. No one except MURIC, Miyatti Allah, Lai Mohammed and of course his equally slow thinking Nairalander supporters. Which speaks volume.

He is on his own and must be isolated.

For those chanting this is just a suspension and still don't understand why Nigeria is boiling because of this.
Nigeria's democracy is being threatened

it is because this is the beginning of the downfall of our democracy.
the next president will weigh this act when deciding how to handle opposition.
Then we will end up in a situation where our constitution will be ignored and presidents will begin to do as they wish
this may get as bad as sealing of court premises to prevent judgements, executing oppositions etc.

We need countries like US, France, UK etc to sanction Nigeria
not just tweet, Nigeria is in grave danger

.

WE operate a Constitutional Democracy, the President, Vice-President, Governors etc SWEAR to uphold the Constitution.

NO President, absolutely NO President can suspend a CHIEF JUSTICE of THE FEDERATION

It is anathema and abhorrent to the doctrine of separation of powers upon which the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is based.

ONLY a REMOVAL or a VACANCY (via a removal, retirement, or death) is recognised by THE Constitution.

The President requires two-thirds of the National Assembly to remove a CJN.

The provision for an acting CJN such as Buhari has done is ONLY in the event of a VACANCY

QUESTION:

Did the CJN retire?
Did the CJN die?
Was the CJN removed?

No? Then NO VACANCY

This is gross misconduct

THIS WILL NOT STAND

He that the gods want to kill...

Buhari has shown so much desperation in recent past as was not shown in the build up to 2019. This underscores the fact that he is no longer as popular as he was pre-2019. He's lost so much good will.

Jonathan was desperate and had to remove outspoken Sanusi. Today, it's Buhari. Removing Onnoghen shows he's desperate.

No one should therefore come online to say Buhari enjoys popularity. If he's popular, he shouldn't use state resources to intimidate Nigerians, his works should speak for him.

Before he talk Jonathan, I once hated Jonathan too, we called d for change, Buhari should show us change, not repeat Jonathan's mistakes and say Jonathan did same or worse.

in a desperate bid for power by all means APC has done the unthinkable.

they installed a relation of the president in INEC

the started sharing tradermoni a few months to elections giving out money to buy votes

they sent efcc against all there perceived enemies while turning a blind eye to visibly corrupt people in APC

they have removed the chief justice and what did the new one quickly do? he quickly installed elections tribunal judges.

people may call this wailing but our democracy is been raped in the open. this is full blown dictatorship

even the international community can see the writing on the wall

are Nigerians cowards ?are we so fearful. are we going to sit and watch while our country is made a caricature of itself

I just weak like dodo

[b][b]Yes! It has started. The US Embassy is the voice of the US government and president in that country on issues of urgent concern. This impunity by buhari - believing he can do anything and get away with it and damn the millions of dissenting voices - must stop.

The US government (I trust Trump. He doesn't like buhari sef) should step up on this. Freeze all buhari and Osinbajo accounts and all cabinet members. Revoke their diplomatic visas and get UK, France and Germany to do same. Let's see where bubu will treat himself next cheesy.

In fact, they should stop buying Nigeria's oil and put an economic embargo on Nigeria. They should stop trading with bubu until his brain is reset and Atiku is sworn in. Let me see how bubu will survive.

Trump should also issue a stern warning to bubu about the next election, get thousands of election observers down here, and the EU and UK should do same. When Atiku wins on May 16, Trump, Theresa May, Emmanuel Macron and Angela Merkel should quickly recognize him as the president-elect before bubu gives further directions to Amina Zakaria and Tanko Mohammed.

If he remains obstinate, they should pressure Saraki and Dogara to get the despot impeached asap. This was never about fighting corruption. This is about the infancy of an African despot.

If anyone is against this decision, he or she should head to the court.

Prove beyond doubt with the Constitution if you think the president broke the Constitution.

Simple.

We should be civil in disagreement.
