Will Fidelity, FCMB etc continue their run tomorrow? Or will they take a water break.. I need to adjust my portfolio. Transfer half of my transcorp to one of Fidelity or FCMB.
Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by onegentleguy:
Ealier today, I had the rare privilege to speak with Mrs Eyitola Adu, an on-board director and wife of the very revered former Chairman/MD/CEO of Morgan capital group, the late Mr Adeleke Adu. Prior to this time, I had also engaged the current MD/CEO, Mr Muyiwa Adeyemi on discussions centred around the purported increase in their brokerage commission due to commence on the 1st of Feb, 2019.
I was worried and particularly concerned over what would be a 100% increment in subcharged fees from 0.25% to 0.50%. My worry was on the premise that perhaps the action might have been wrongly timed and if indeed such increase lends credible answers to the following:
1) Is it necessary?
2) Would it be justified?
3) Is it worthwhile... does such increment really commensurate with the services rendered by the firm?

In finding answers to these and more, I had to engage the firm given that I am also a long time active client.
I will try to be as succinct as possible.
On the 1st(whether it was necessary), well, I might not be in the best position to answer that since I am neither a staff nor associate to the firm. However management guided that they had recently been operating at a loss, especially with the continuous upgrade in their platform. ...and that if they have to maintain the initial fee of 0.25%, they'll either be forced to go extinct or cut back completely on these and even past services, which clients will definitely frown at.
Even on the back of that, there are also plans to continually improve on the services been offered in other to make their platform more robust and even more user friendly. ...hence the inevitable need to add up on commission.
In looking at whether this action(when implemented) would be justified, it would make sense to view it from the perspective of whether Morgan Capital had actually done well before this time. ...can we say that the firm had performed creditably well in the past? Especially on the purview that they came up with what was arguably the best online trading platform at the time(still is), has continuously worked to and improved on it while charging an unproportionately low commission fee of 0.25%(the very lowest), at a time when virtually all brokerage firms where charging as high as 1-1.85% commission? ...an over 500-750% discount !!
Now some might argue that brokerage commissions are negotiable. ...and that they where not really paying that high with their own firms. Well, I agree but what about the extent of services rendered? What about the degree of robustness of such platform? What about the level of user friendliness?
But for anything, the Morgan Capital i-trade platform puts u completely in charge !! U trade WHERE, WHEN and HOW u want it, almost at the 'speed of light' !! Those who are clients of Morgan can attest to this fact.
Finally, is it worthwhile... can we really say without sentiment that the expected increase(if and when implemented) commensurates or is consistent with the services as rendered by the firm? Again rather than answer to that, I'd prefer to focus on whether the services(cost efficency, robustness, trade speed & execution, user friendly interface etc) of Morgan at a brokerage commission of the said 0.50% is, and would still be better than that of other firms at a higher or even same commission fee? ...I dare say it would undoubtedly be better even if other firms offered a similar or even lower fee. ...well, at least in the present.
Again, I'd prefer to ask if Morgan can still offer much more in terms of cost savings, trade effectiveness & efficiency and value accretion when honestly compared/weighed against that of other brokerage firms. ...I'll prefer to find out where Morgan would quite sincerely still fall on a scale of 1-10.(even with this increase)
On a side note, the only area I believe Morgan will need to improve on is on customer service. I had in separate and extensive discussions with Mrs Adu and the MD/CEO Mr Muyiwa suggested areas that needs to be urgently improved upon. ...particularly on customer finesse.
On that backdrop, I also condemned the nature of feedback that was given to one of us here following from his mail to query the purported fee increase. As I told them, he has the right(like every other client) to want to ask questions, and no matter how he did it, imploring finesse means that Morgan's customer care reps should know how to diplomatically but calmly handle things. ...including any other area that could be of concern to any client in future.
Well, Management assured that they have already put mercenaries in place to improve on their customer services going forward.
Many of us will agree that they have actually improved on this line given past precedence.
I was also especially inquisitive to know and by extension assured that this increment isn't going to be the tradition/norm going forward, but was reassured that this wouldn't be the case. ...in fact, I was told that in the absence of any unforseen occurrence, this status quo(post fee increase) would be maintained for some years.
In all, any question of whether it would still be best(even with the said increment) to remain with Morgan Capital should quite frankly, only have a resounding YES for an answer. ...there is NOT an iota of doubt to this !!

It's however important to state that the intent for going this far was only driven out of my quest to want the best for all of us. ...especially the existing clients of Morgan. I hold some of us here in high esteem and I must say that much as I have given, I have also personally benefited a lot from this forum. ...and so its only normal to want to give back and try to be protective of our interest in my own little way.
...and for those who still might abnormally want to accuse me of anything, hear this; I am NOT a staff of Morgans and do NOT have any link with it !!
For the records, I personally also have an A/C with Lead capital and Meristem. ...and manage yet another for 2 clients with Stanbic ibtc Stockbrokers.
But with Morgan Capital which indeed remains unarguably the best option, I was only trying to state and view things from an honest, unbiased and objective perspective.

Regards.

@Onegentleguy, thanks for taking your time to investigate and communicate this discussion with Morgan Capital to us.
I just dont want to sound as if I was in support of the hike when it was mentioned here lest I be name-called or insulted.
To be frank, me and you know that there's no way the company would be able to keep up with effective service delivery considering that very low rate (since inception) and, looking at it from the angle of running costs to inflation and to many other variables........ except they have other sources of income.
Of recent, they've improved on their customer service, research and constantly striving to be ahead of happenings in the stock market and the country as a whole. Cant recall receiving various emails in the past. Also we hardly have connection issues and the like these days unless its general.
Even with the increase in commision, its still far lesser than majority of the houses.
Ironically those shouting "we wouldnt gree" are also with houses with higher commission % but no complaint on that.
Anyway, anyone that knows any broker that charges lesser than Morgan before this increase should introduce us to it.
Before una go quote me, remember say I too dey affected with the increase, no be say I happy but na my personal opinion viewing it objectively. Instead of quoting to insult, say your own opinion as well. tongue grin

We like Morgan capital and want them to survive they way we are surviving, personally am not against their increase, but it must not be 100% increment in their 25% commission, but at least 50% will be ok. Hope they will stop charging #2,500 annual service charge ?
How I wish that by next year they will be no.1 in the Nigeria stockbroking rating.

One of the benefits of Morgan. Once you sell you can buy with the fund immediately not that someone will wait for 3days for the fund to clear before you make use of it again. Although I knew of another house that allowed this as well.
