oilPUSSY: Everybody begged him to stay, Ojukwu even promised to release a broadcast to support his taking over the government, Ejoor promised the same thing as well, but he did not want to die like Ironsi, so he made way. A Northern sergeant had refused to obey his orders, saying he could only obey them if they came from his Commanding Officer, a Northerner in the person of Capt Joe Garba, if my memory serves me right. It was this incident that made him conclude his best option was to flee 5 Likes |

Slonge2: oil ballers indeed, I know an Igbo millionaire in Port Harcourt who deals on importing and exporting the things needed for drilling crude oil or there about. This man has several yoruber employees, maybe one of your family members are working for him. Awolowo more honorable kwa? Someone that choked on otapiapia is more honorable than Ojukwu that fought for his people Bianca riding FFK dick indeed, am sure kudirat also was riding on some northerner's dick before been killed along with her husband. Wrapper wearing? are you sure cuz these your coneheaded brothers beg to differ. 10 Likes 2 Shares

PharoahIII: All of this is not the main issue. The main issue is that Gowon and Ojukwu signed an agreement in Ghana. Gowon caused the entire problem when he chose to break that agreement. Had Gowon kept to the agreement he signed, there would have been no war 4 Likes |

gidgiddy: I get your point, I know of the pogroms where over 70,000 Ibos were killed in the North. Yes, that was beyond Ojukwu's control, that was also beyond Gowon's control. That perhaps was the first and only coup in Nigeria in which civilians took an active part. In fact, at some point, Northern civilians had planned to execute a few Northern soldiers so as to give the impression that the Southerners were at it again. This was to spur them (Northern soldiers) into executing the second coup. The Northerners wanted to revenge the killings of their leaders that were killed on Jan 15. Perhaps if Nzeogwu and co had killed a few important Igbo people (Like Mbadiwe, Zik, M.I. Okpara, Ironsi and so on ) in 1966, the civil war may never have been fought. By failing to kill any Igbo man (save Col Arthur Unegbe who was the Quarter Master General of the Nigerian Army), that coup, no matter how you look at it, had the semblance of an 'Igbo' coup, even though it was NOT an Igbo coup. Secondly, if Ironsi had executed the coup plotters perhaps the North would not have been so eager to retaliate. Another thing that angered the North was Ironsi's unification decree (Decree no. 34). Ironsi should not have done that. It was a very insensitive thing to do, considering Nigeria was then a Federalist state in the strictest sense of the word. The agitation for secession did not start with the Igbos, in fact, it was the Northerners who wanted to secede at first after Ironsi's unification decree, and that is why the second coup was codenamed 'Operation Araba'. Araba is an Hausa word which means to break or divide 2 Likes 1 Share |

Why are you fixated about what the Yorubas said ,do or will do? 1) Why can't you leave 2023 for the future and see what will happen to the Yorubas? 2) Political parties, NOT tribes/regions form alliances. What happened in the first republic was an alliance between the NPC and the NCNC. Richard Akinjide,Kola Balogun and TOS Benson were staunch NCNC members and Ministers under the Balewa Administration. 3) An Awolowo acolyte, the late Samuel Gomsu Ikoku of the Action Group defeated his own father, Alvan Ikoku of NCNC (a Zik's loyalist) in the election into the Eastern House of Assembly and he was the minority leader in the EASTERN HOUSE of Assembly. rainylad: |

Do you remember that Ojukwu was Abacha's Hatchetman? And he carried on until Obasanjo told him off. Soon after, Ojukwu died of his own shame. His burial was a Fulani's bluff. |

This thread is an indication that afonjas(Africans) and Igbos/Biafrans (Negroes) are not the same people; they reason and process information differently. I feel sorry for afonjas and their generation...nothing good will ever come out of you people with the way you lots reason! 3 Likes

2n2k: Awolowo's passport (along with the passports of other prominent Nigerians) had been seized by the Buhari government. Awolowo needed to go for a medical checkup in the UK and Babangids ordered that his passport should be returned to him. I can't remember for sure, but I think he also ordered that the presidential jet should be used to fly him to the UK. Awolowo went to Dodan Barracks to thank Babangida when he came back from the checkup. I watched it on the NTA News in 1986. The NTA interviewed Babangida and Awolowo in front of the council chambers at Dodan Barracks. Awolowo said he was there to thank Babangida, while Babangida said that Awolowo was a national treasure. Then Chief Awolowo and HID got into their car (a W100 Mercedes 600) and drove off. A few weeks later it was announced that Awolowo was dead. I remember that the newspapers said that he had a smile on his face when his body was found. Virtually all the newspapers used black mastheads in his honour. Many people paid tribute to him (I think that was the time that Ojukwu said that Awolowo was the best president that Nigeria never had). There were actually 2 days of holiday. I woke up early on the first day and tuned to OGTV. They kept showing an old documentary of Awolowo from the 1960s in a loop. I think that they were waiting for live signals from the NTA. The song, "Were Lo Ba Wa Se" was in the documentary and I think that was the first time that I actually got the lyrics, because they kept playing it over and over from 7am until 9 or 10am. The first day was the lying in state. Babangida ordered that the body should be in a glass casket so that everybody could see it and it was carried on an open top police Land Rover (also so that the crowd could see it). The lying in state was at the National Stadium in Lagos and the casket was carried on the back of Land Rover through the streets. There were huge crowds on the streets. Babangida was at the lying in state, as were the governors of the LOBOO states (Lagos, Ogun, Bendel, Oyo, Ondo). Babangida was the first to file past the coffin and very many others filed past it. I remember seeing a little boy in a scouts uniform march past the casket and salute as he got close to it. The person that got the biggest cheer from the crowd was Baba Salah. He entered the arena with exaggerated weeping and he also went past the coffin. The second holiday was the day of the funeral. My brother severly criticised the NTA on that day. The picture quality was terrible and my brother asked how the NTA planned to broadcast the Under 17 World Cup (which Nigeria planned to host in 1991) to the world if they couldn't broadcast clear pictures from Ogun State. The Chief of General Staff (military vice president), Admiral Aikhomu, led the Federal Government delegation to the funeral. I also remember all the crazy rumours after the funeral. Some people said that Awo's brain was taken to the Soviet Union, while his heart was taken to another country. 8 Likes 4 Shares |

I forgot to mention one of the controversies that trailed his death. The Federal Government declared days of mourning and ordered that flags should be flown at half mast. One of the ways that they decided to immortalise Awolowo was to rename the University of Ife and call it the Obafemi Awolowo University. Students of UniIfe were not happy about this. "Ife The Great" was a brand. It was known as the most radical university in Nigeria. No protest or riot was complete without Ife students. They were not happy that their university was being rebranded without their permission, so they staged several protests against it. Professor Wole Soyinka (who had lectured at Ife) was one of the people that was opposed to the new name. Ife students refused to accept the name OAU for many years afterwards. Picture 1) Obafemi Awolowo, Babangida and HID outside the Council Chambers at Dodan Barracks during the thank you visit. Picture 2) The glass casket bearing Awolowo's corpse during the lying in state. Pictures 3 and 4) They tried to recreate Obafemi Awolowo's funeral during HID's funeral, so her body was also in a glass casket and it was also carried on an open top police Land Rover escorted by police mounted troop. 3 Likes 3 Shares

Awolowo died at 78yrs old, same age as Ojukwu but he died peaceably with smile on his face while Ojukwu was alreading going senile before his death at 78. I would choose Awo's death many times over a senile Ojukwu. 2 Likes 1 Share |
